Seems very reasonable
-
Probably
-
What does that mean in practice?
-
The problem with that group is going to be scoring. Look for long stretches where no one can put the ball in the basket. Spacing would remain a terrible problem. Kind of the same thing we’ve seen most of the past 10 years.

I agree. Even if he’s not worried about being fired because we bring in a big time free agent (unlikely in my opinion), he as well as any other coaching candidate for our job has to be looking at potentially 60+ losses for the next few years, and likely continuing pressure to tank, which makes it nearly impossible to develop the team. Wouldn’t think it would be appealing to those who might have other options.

We haven’t heard anything about Atkinson even interviewing so either they’ve done a great job of keeping it all hidden, or Atkinson told them “no thank you” early on. I suspect we’ll have the next coach named sometime this week.
-
Thank you. I believe this is who they will hire, although to be fair I don’t think Clifford had a great wingspan.
-
Someone may have posted this already but what are the wingspans of our coaching candidates?
-
Good chance that will happen no matter who the coach is.
-
Amen brother. I don’t believe in “meaningless “ NBA games. Every game is an opportunity to develop your team in the right way, or the wrong way.

If you can really lose 80% of the time, please tell me who you’re betting on, and I will become very rich

Well not in some ways, but to the extent that defense relies on effort, and effort relies on conditioning, there might still be some connection. With Mo it’s sometimes hard to tell if he’s reacting slowly due to lack of knowledge or due to lack of conditioning. He usually seems low energy to me.

Agree and +1. Of course how to identify that best choice is always the issue. I agree that nostalgia or past accomplishments as a player for the Magic should not factor into that calculation.
-
In fairness that’s only one basket

No argument at all from me. +1

I’ve never said tanking never works. That would be like saying no one ever wins big at Vegas. Of course there are winners. My argument has always been that the risk is too high, because if you don’t luck out you could be very bad for a very long time, and the odds are stacked against you.

A few players are good enough to single handedly turn their teams around. It doesn’t happen very often.
-
Getting a little ahead of things. Detroit and Houston got good picks, yes. But they have made themselves awful teams. Will their picks be good enough players to turn those franchises around? That’s the real question. And I think the answer will turn out to be “no”. Tanking puts you in a big hole. You have to be very lucky to get out. It’s a decision that’s now cost us 10 years so I’m not sure why you think it’s a quick route to improvement.

NBA draft July 29, only a bit over a month from now, so we won’t have to wait too long to see how it all plays out. Regarding a coach, while I never thought there was any chance one would be hired before the lottery results were announced, I believe they should definitely have a coach in place prior to the draft, hopefully by at least a week or two. If they don’t, then they’re having even more trouble finding someone decent to take the job than I expect.

Great post

Good point. And that reality is making our search for a good coach more difficult, to put it mildly.
-
What you say above is how I understood your comment. At that point it was trying to come to terms with what happened. There were quite a few others though who really believed we were better off with Bamba than with any of the guards. After rereading some of that thread, I’m convinced that we could have gotten either Trae or Doncic had we invested 20 million in a deal to move up. And what a great investment that would have been.

Well said.

Hasn't Jacque Vaughn coached before?

Isn't that a Backstreet Boys song or something??
