Argentina 85 vs. Canada 70

LAS VEGAS (2007 FIBA Americas Championship) - Argentina remained perfect (5-0) in FIBA Americas 2007 Championship play, upending Canada 85-70 in the second game of the day at Thomas & Mack Center.

The Argentines led the entire way and Canada's cold shooting to start (25 percent from the field in the first half) never allowed them to truly get into the game.

The Canadians managed just eight points in both the first and second quarters, trailing 46-16 at the half.

Luis Scola scored a game-high 23 points for Argentina, while teammate Roman Gonzalez added an 11-point, 11-rebound effort in the victory.

Samuel Dalembert grabbed 16 rebounds and added nine points for Canada in the loss.

ARG - Argentina build confidence with winning streak

LAS VEGAS (FIBA Americas Championship) - Argentina center Roman Gonzalez believes his side will be approaching their best when they face the United States in the final FIBA Americas Championship quarter-final round match on Thursday.

Argentina went into this tournament without a number of star players, including Chicago Bull Andres Nocioni and San Antonio Spurs Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto, but have so far won all of six of their games.

They beat Canada 85-70 on Tuesday night to ensure qualification for the semi-final with two games to spare, meaning that they can afford to lose their game against fellow undefeated side USA.

They could meet the United States in the last four and if that were to happen, it would most likely be in the final.

No matter who they play, Gonzalez, who poured in 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Canada, is confident the reigning Olympic gold medalists can earn themselves one of the two automatic places awarded to the finalists for Beijing.

"This national team has not peaked yet but we know what we are playing for," he said.

"Canada, for example, thought they would win easily but in each game we have defended our honor of being the reigning Olympic champions.

"Things are coming together, little by little.

"We have claimed a sixth win in a row, so we know we can face this clash with the United States with confidence."

29/08/2007Canada 97 vs. Mexico 80

LAS VEGAS (2007 FIBA Americas Championship) - Behind 17 points and five three-pointers from Jermaine Anderson, Canada rebounded from yesterday's loss to Argentina and defeated Mexico 97-80 on Wednesday in second round action of the FIBA Americas Championship.

Mexico led 22-21 after the first quarter, but scored just nine points in the second, opening the door for the Canadians. Canada led comfortably the rest of the way, enjoying a margin as high as 27 points.

Levon Kendall and Denham Brown combined for 22 of Canada's 61 rebounds, as they outworked Mexico 61-30 on the boards. Kendall also added 14 points while Brown chipped in with 11.

Argentina 86 vs. Brazil 79

LAS VEGAS (2007 FIBA Americas Championship) - After trailing by as many as 17 points, Argentina rallied to stun Brazil in overtime by the final of 86-79.

With Leandro Barbosa on the bench for part of the third quarter and most of the fourth with four fouls, Argentina slowly chipped away at Brazil's lead.

Barbosa wasn't the only Brazilian who struggled with foul troubles.

Tiago Splitter fouled out halfway through the fourth quarter, which opened the floodgates for Argentina's Luis Scola, who had been bottled up by Splitter until that point.

Scola had seven points and seven rebounds through three quarters, but would finish with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, doing most of his damage once Splitter had fouled out.

Paolo Quinteros added 19 points and Carlos Delfino 17 for the winners.

With the win, the Argentines remain undefeated in 2007 FIBA Americas Championship play.

If the United States can get past Uruguay in the nightcap, it too will own an unblemished record.

The USA and Argentina are set to square off in the Second Round finale on Thursday at 9 p.m. PT.

Uruguay's loss to Brazil in the day's second contest officially eliminated it from contention for the semifinals and one of the invites into next summer's Pre-Olympic World qualifying tournament.

Remember, the top two teams here qualify for the 2008 Summer Games, while the following three finishers are extended an invite to compete for one of the last-minute bids.

Brazil is locked into the three-spot and, Saturday, will face the loser of the night's final contest between the U.S. and Argentina.

The winner of that game will meet the winner of the 6 p.m. contest between Puerto Rico and Canada.

Canada enters the game with nine points -- a team earns two for a win, one for a loss and zero for a forfeit -- while Puerto Rico trails with eight. The teams would be tied at 10 points apiece, but the tie breaker would be the head-to-head results -- or tonight's outcome.

In the first round, Puerto Rico looked to be out of this tournament as it struggled to a 1-3 record in group play. A solid showing in the second phase -- wins over Brazil and Venezuela -- has kept its hopes alive.

"(The) game is a very classic game between Canada and Puerto Rico," the team's head coach Manolo Cintron said yesterday. "Canada is a team that plays inside out, they are strong, they're good offensive players. Their big guys are very good offensive players and they run their offense through them. We have a chance to beat them; we have beaten them before and can do it again."
