  1. I really do hope the people here who think Dwight is going to stay are right. I feel like he might warm to it if the team keeps playing well. Need to get Jameer back and playing well though. It seems odd from a team that doesn't use the PG as a distributer as much as a lot of others, but this team has always gone as the point guard goes.

Otis needs to bring in some pieces, GOOD pieces for Dwight to want to continue to stay here.

If we stand pat, we're not as readily built as the other elite teams in the league, and Dwight won't be standing pat either.

If it comes to we have to trade him, I really really hope we can get Andrew Bynum over any other center. Anyone saw his first game back? He was a MONSTER and the reason why the Lakers won today.

Don't know if anyone else watched the game, but it was a pretty good close game.

Bynum was impressive for only 31 minutes.

    29 points

    13 rebounds

    6 offensive rebs

    2 blocks

    13-18 from the field

    3-3 freethrow

He was clutch in both defense and offense in the 4th and his foot work is still years ahead of Dwight.

  3. That is exactly how I remembered it as well.

T-Mac really wanted Orlando to trade the 1st pick for real help now. Either that or at least get a more proven big guy in the draft and that was Emeka Okafor at that time.

It got so ridiculous that Dwight Howard's camp was confident they were going to be drafted #1 that they even had open communications with McGrady's agent to convince T-Mac to stay in Orlando.

And here are some articles I dugged up:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1824663

Although Tracy McGrady could not be reached for comment on Friday, he has said he would opt to leave if he didn't think the Magic could improve quickly. Orlando fell to a league-worst 21-61 record next season and has the No. 1 pick in the draft.

McGrady had hoped the team would trade the pick for veteran help, but the club wants to keep the selection. On Friday, the team worked out UConn's Emeka Okafor, and plans to do the same with high schooler Dwight Howard on Saturday. The Magic is expected to use the No. 1 pick on one of those two players.

Magic general manager John Weisbrod did say, however, he has received trade bids that are intriguing and getting better by the day.

"There are teams offering three guys and their first-round pick. Three established players and a lottery pick is certainly a respectable offer for a team that has a lot of holes to fill," Weisbrod said. "It comes down to making a judgment of how special you think one of these two kids can be."

McGrady had been pressured by Weisbrod to make a decision about his long-range future in Orlando. Weisbrod does not want to go into the 2004-05 season uncertain about McGrady's status.

McGrady's seven-year, $93 million contract runs through the 2006-07 season. But he can opt out of the deal after next season.

    Here's another article:

    http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2004-06-04/sports/0406040305_1_dwight-howard-tracy-mcgrady-magic

Atlanta high school star Dwight Howard believes he can help persuade Tracy McGrady to stay in Orlando if the Magic -- and T-Mac -- just give him the chance before the NBA draft, then select him with the No. 1 overall pick.

Howard told the Sentinel on Thursday he should be the Magic's choice over Connecticut center Emeka Okafor and that he'd "love" for McGrady to watch him work out in Orlando for the Magic.

Howard, speaking by phone from Atlanta, says he believes he's a better player than Okafor, describing himself as a "a young Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan mixed together. That's me."

McGrady has said he doesn't think a player in this draft can dramatically improve the team enough to make him want to stay. McGrady, who can opt out of his contract after next season, has been pushing the Magic to trade the pick and acquire proven players. The Howard camp feels it can change his mind.

Magic General Manager John Weisbrod says the club could deal the No. 1 pick and has fielded at least a dozen calls from teams interested in trading for the selection, presumably Okafor or Howard, a 6-11 forward from Southwest Christian High School in Atlanta.

Howard's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said he will try to arrange for McGrady to attend Howard's workout with Orlando.

"We want Tracy to see Dwight work out. We'd like to have Tracy there. I think he'll see this is an opportunity to have someone special," Goodwin said. "I think it would be useful just to have T-Mac see Dwight. Tracy has been in this situation before himself."

McGrady also made the leap from high school to the NBA, selected by the Toronto Raptors with the ninth pick in the 1997 draft.

"I think Tracy would love to play with me," Howard said. "I know I'd love to play with him."

Most experts say Okafor is the top pick and the most NBA-ready, and Howard generally has been listed as the second-best player. But Howard and his camp are not shy about selling themselves.

Lol, at Dwight saying that he's a mix between Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan.

But McGrady back then wanted nothing to do with Dwight, nothing.

  4. Not real news, but blah nonetheless.

    http://twitter.com/#!/JoshuaBRobbins/status/152432379460456448

Dwight Howard said he had dinner with Deron Williams last night. The real news: D12 said restaurant picked up the check.

From the New Jersey Star Ledger: http://www.nj.com/sports

Dwight and Deron had dinner Wednesday Night

ORLANDO -- Deron Williams didn't want to even address it, but Dwight Howard didn't mind admitting that, yes, he and Williams went out to dinner Wednesday night when Williams arrived in town with the Nets.

Earlier, Williams had stammered and said, "I don't even know -- I really don't,'' when asked if he had dinner with Howard. However, when asked if he would recommend New York City living to a 6-foot-11 friend, Williams said, "Yes, I would definitely recommend the area.''

Howard said he and Williams did a low-key dinner, not wanting to set off any kind of firestorm.

"He wanted to be silly and joke about it, but I said 'No, this is not the time. Let’s just go eat, and then go have a good game against each other tomorrow.' That’s it,'' Howard said.

The restaurant in Orlando picked up the tab for the two.

  5. Granted I wasn't living in Orlando, but from what I remember, that's exactly what T-Mac did. T-Mac wanted to play with a "Legit Big Man" and he saw Yao as the best in the league.

He felt that Okafor was better than Dwight, as Okafor had just come off a dominating performance in college. Dwight was an unknown quantity and there was a lot of questions about his maturity, footwork, offense skills, and so on. Many felt Dwight was kind of a poor-man's Kevin Garnett, whereas Okafor was something akin to Tim Duncan (cerebral player with very solid basketball skills) with the ability to block shots.

When we drafted Dwight, we did so knowing that Tracy was as good as gone when we did so.

That's how I remember it, at least.

That is exactly how I remembered it as well.

  6. I was just chating with a board member who has a very good handle on the cap and cba and he pointed this out to me-

"Anyone else find it funny that, despite the fact that they'll have at least 30m in CAP space at the end of the season and could have as much as 38m if they turn down Gibson's TO and Sessions opts out, no one believes for one second that any FA is going to Cleveland. Like, that option isn't even being entertained by the media.

However: for all the talk of Cleveland being absolutely ruined by Lebron leaving, they're still in a position where 2 years later, they're going to have enough CAP space for 2 max free agents, 2 top 4 picks from the previous draft, and likely another lottery pick forthcoming.

THAT is what Orlando should do, particularly since unlike Cleveland, Orlando has proven to be a place in which FAs will actually come to play."

Any of you that still feel the best route is to grab whatever we can after reading that comment need to have your head examined. I would go a step further and say that if management is looking at doing anything other than moves that end up with this type of result they all need to go. 2yrs of rebuilding vs many more years crossing our fingers that components from mediocre to awful teams like Atl or NJ or a team on the down side like LA are going to get us into contention, the choice is obvious.

Wow if we can pull something like that off.

Orlando >>>> Cleveland in free agent destinations.

High Draft picks + 2 superstars would be a wet dream even David Stern's Hornets would be jealous of.

  7. Yahoo: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=ApgNjpOnhTJLzXGfU6eJWca8vLYF?slug=aw-wojnarowski_tracy_mcgrady_dwight_howard_nba_122811

Lol, coming from the same guy who asked to be traded because we didn't want to draft Emeka Okafor.

“I can’t see him coming [to New Jersey],” Tracy McGrady told Yahoo! Sports late Tuesday inside the visiting locker room at the Prudential Center.

“If it’s just Dwight and D-Will, he’s better off just staying in Orlando. You want to go to a team that’s championship caliber, and just him and D-Will won’t get it done. There’s got to be other pieces around to make it look sweet.”

In the most awkward game of the young season, the depleted Nets play the Magic on Thursday night in Orlando. The Nets’ Brook Lopez is out several weeks with a broken foot, and the starting five and bench surrounding Williams is beyond brutal. The Nets have gutted themselves for the cap space to re-sign Williams and sign Howard this summer, entrusting the franchise’s future on the belief they will secure the best center.

It’s so hard for players to visualize a different day for the Nets, a Brooklyn arena that still is under construction. And so much easier to make a case for the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and an owner, Mark Cuban, who is fully engaged in the championship chase. After watching the Nets offer no resistance to the Hawks in a 106-70 dismantling Tuesday night, T-Mac’s vision of Howard’s future had been further validated in his own mind.

“D-Will is from Dallas,” McGrady said. “You’ve got Dirk Nowitzki there. They’re going to have [cap space] there. That looks sweet. Dirk. D-Will. And then you get Dwight Howard. That’s it, right there.”

“I’ve been watching Orlando play, and I think they let it go too far – to where they can’t compete for a championship,” McGrady said. “Dwight’s going to find a sweeter spot for him next year with him being a free agent, with D-Will being a free agent, and Dallas already having an established star there. Yup, Dallas.”

And then he laughed and said, “You heard it from me first.”

  8. Unless we get a hot start and go 10-1 or something, we may just lose D12.

Posted this on the Dwight thread, but I saw this posted on realgm.

The Nets trading for Okur sets them up to have cap space of $29 mil enough to sign 2 all-stars.

    Quote:

Nets have a master plan to land Dwight either via trade or wait for free agency:

    Scenario #A

They can still trade Okur + Lopez for Dwight + Hedo's contract; and while Lopez is healing, the Nets will still be decent and won't be losing as many ball games.

    Scenario #B

If the Magic does not trade Dwight this season, they risk losing him in Free Agency, since the Nets with all their expiring contracts can sign Dwight to play with Deron...

PLUS (here's the kicker), with $29 million in cap room, that's enough for 2 max contracts aka the Nets can sign one other star player... so basically they can potentially have Dwight + Deron + 1 other star player for next year.

    /quote

It looks like Otis will trade him before scenario 2 happens, and Dwight leaves like Lebron and Bosh and we get nothing
