King James Gets Demoted to "Princess James"

This is a hilarious story. It has actually already discussed in the Around the NBA forum. http://orlandomagiczone.com/ev...91029871/m/730109153

The only possible negative impact I see is that they now can be a player in going after Barnes. If Otis was interested in him, the asking price might have just gone up. Personally, I'm not going to lose any sleep over whether or not Matt Barnes is on the Magic roster. Regardless, we can get a player a whole lot better than Barnes or Bass with $8M when the teams that want to play in next years FA game have to dump more salary now that the salary cap for next year has been reduced so significantly. That's not exactly true. We are the only team that could actually sign and trade Hedo to Toronto, so they had to involve us to get the deal done. A future pick would have been ideal but the trade exeption is still a really nice insurance policy in case we need to make a deal down the road. besides, is anyone really that afraid of Toronto? We may have let them off the hook a bit, but we also added tremendous trade flexibility by participating in the deal. Yeah, I wasn't very specific with that comment, was I. It is true that we were the only ones that could do the S&T, but my point was that they could have still pulled off a trade that excluded the Magic, that would have included more players on their roster to give them the cap space to sign Hedo as a FA without an S&T. I agree completely with your post.

Report: Turk dealt to TOR for TPE. Page 17.

quote: Originally posted by Catman:The Magic may hang on to the TE and have it in case of injury. Great move by Otis. A few thoughts: 1) For those who think Otis was so very clever about keeping this wonderful plan under his hat, according to the reports, the Mavs and Raptors went LOOKING for a 4th party to help. So let's not pretend that Otis was sitting there with this up his sleeve all along. It fell into his lap. That's not a criticism of him, but let's not act like he pulled this off with genius planning. 2) Actually, it's fun seeing the different board members try to predict what will happen. Some will be right, some will be wrong. For the most part, it will even out over time. So ya might as well have fun with it. No sense anyone getting emotional or their feelings hurt over it. And it sounds like the parties involved are handling it just fine. It's the others that have an axe to grind that chime in and turn it into something ugly. Some people take this stuff WAY too seriously. 3) Catman, Otis may very well hold onto this as protection against an injury. But I can also see how he might see a real golden opportunity here, in light of the announcement of the reduced salary cap for next year. Teams that thought they had dropped their salary cap numbers low enough to make a run at one of the superstars coming out next year, may now be forced to unload further payroll. And that may give Otis the opportunity to now pick up a very, very good player for nothing more than the TE. It would be discussed in the same light as the Lakers signing of Gasol. That is the type of scenario that may be very possible. That is an awfully large TE.

We CANNOT do a S&T for Gortat. He has signed the offer sheet. We either match, or we don't. Period. But Junkie, I actually do think we might very well be the 4th team involved, as Toronto has made it plain that they want to work S&Ts, but Toronto has nothing we truly want. With our interest in Bass, it would make sense that we would want to jump in to this transaction. Might not happen, but it certainly is a possibility.

    Where is the justice?

Either that, or maybe it's because Yao kept his mouth shut instead of announcing that he would indeed be playing the next year then, after the IE was rejected, announcing that he would miss the next season after all. Apparently you forgot what a "class act" Grant Hill truly is.

what will Turk be like in years 3 - 5????

Hopefully his contract with Toronto will soon be signed so that these threads can be moved to the Around the NBA forum. I wish him the very best and hope his best years are ahead of him, except when he plays Orlando.

  11. I'll repeat what I have said in other threads. Otis and SVG both want Shard as their starting PF. The only acquisition that would have possibly changed that would have been Sheed. Whoever else we sign will be for the purpose of coming off the bench and providing versatility in matching up with big lineups. But Shard is the starting PF for this team. All the GMs and coaches in this forum that desperately want to imagine otherwise are wasting their time. Personally, I don't think that they believe that Shard can guard a wing player effectively for long periods of time, and that is one of the main reasons they do not intend on giving him full run at SF. They may be right or they may be wrong, but that's the way they like it, so I would suggest taking the "acceptance" route. Otherwise, you are going to have a miserable summer.
  12. The importance of Dwight developing a shot where he can hit from outside the paint is that it would allow for a true PF to be used in the lineup. Because of the current limitations to his game, he needs all of his teammates (thus defenders) as far away from his as possible. Meaning that they also have to all be a threat to score from the outside. If Dwight can develop that shot, then you can now put a PF on the floor that can go to the paint when Dwight drifts out, adding rebounding and defense on both ends of the floor. Until Dwight does that, you cannot put a Ben Wallace type player on the floor with Dwight for 30 minutes a game.

If you are voicing a potential concern, that is one thing. But your tone is accusational as though Otis has already gutted our roster and has no intentions (or ability) to plug the holes. You can't tell a cook that his food tastes lousy when he hasn't even finished adding all the ingredients.

    Back Up Point Guard (POLL)

quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen: quote: Originally posted by Natmayo: quote: Originally posted by Marc Acres 3:16:In all honesty I think I would take door number three and jump off the roof of the Amway Arena. LOL, I believe a lot of Magic fans would join you in that mass suicide. My thoughts would be to get a young, raw player with some talent and let him develop. I'm hoping Pargo will show something at summer league and we sign him. He would be affordable and get some quality coaching which would let him grow into a good contributing role. I like your thinking and I would tend to agree. But then I think about how reckless Jameer plays and how he has been hurt for stretches every year. If we want to win a championship we need a quality guard backing him up that has starting potential. I think we all agree without Alston trade no way we make it to the finals. We need a player that can do what Alston did if needed. If Jameer was not so wreckless, I would agree with you 100%. But given his history, you know there is a good chane he is going to be out 10 games a year minimum. So why not take a chance on a guy like AI or Starbury. If they cause trouble you can always cut them. If reckless play by Jameer is an issue, I don't see how AI or Marbury solves that problem. Jameer is mild compared to those 2 wildmen on the court.

Sheed to visit Orlando next week

That might change his mind The Spurs will be interesting. Other factors, beyond the comparison between the 2 cities, which you just referred to: DISADVANTAGE: Sheed may like the idea of playing for Pops more than SVG. ADVANTAGE: If his goal is to make it to the Finals, he may see the West path as too difficult with Artest now added to the Lakers, and may believe that coming to the Magic is his best chance at getting back to the Finals. And, Nyce, I hope I'm right too. But, of course, I'm just speculating as much as the others, so mine could be nothing more than a pipe dream.

Sheed to visit Orlando next week

For those who think that the Magic will not offer Sheed the full MLE, I believe you are mistaken. While the original plan may have been to split the MLE, the events of the off-season have, to this point, been the Perfect Storm for the Magic. When the Mavs were the team that made the offer to Gortat, the Red Sea parted for Otis. He now has the ability to sign Bass or Gortat without touching the MLE, so there is now no reason to have to split it (yeah, I know he always had that option with Gortat, but now he also knows the value of the contract involved). This allows them to enter the Sheed sweepstakes and offer just as much as the other top contenders. One HUGE advantage we have over the Celtics is that fact that there is no state income tax in Florida. Remember, Boston is in the Kennedy state, so taxes are massive. That's what Kennedy's do. Since Sheed is not going to make as much as he was originally hoping, this difference may mean quite a bit to him. Unfortunately, I believe that Texas is one of the other states that does not have a state income tax, so that advantage relevant to the Spurs does not exist (if my facts are right, which I'm not 100% sure of).
  18. Mr Charisma

Gortat a Maverick in principle according to Stein's twitter

My guess is that Otis will match. This now gives him more freedom to do what he wishes with the MLE. He won't be forced to go big, although I think he would like to.
  19. Mr Charisma

What would make you happy ?

Actually, I'll choose none of the above. I would have chosen #1, but you used the word "starter". That's not going to happen. But we do need a quality PF that we can use when the other team gives us major matchup problems with their size. I am of the opinion that SVG already intends to give Ryan Anderson a shot at major run next season.
  20. I'm amazed at how everyone refuses to understand that Rashard Lewis is the starting PF for this team. Get it in your heads. That is not going to change. There will be situations in games where SVG will choose to go big but, make no mistake about it, Lewis is the starting PF on this team. I think a group therapy session is needed for the many that refuse to accept this truth.
  21. Gortat's value is in the way he allows Dwight to play. Dwight can play aggressively on the boards and on the defensive end, if him getting into foul trouble does not doom us in the game. With Gortat as his backup, this team is confident it can win without Dwight on the court. No Gortat = no legitimate backup center, unless you sign Sheed or Dice, which they are obviously not going to do. If Dwight has to play cautiously, then his effectiveness will be greatly diminished.

Competing for a title on the back of a dominant Superman has turned Orlando fans all nostalgic. Even the $3.75 beer and $8 parking helps fans get jiggy down memory lane. Unfortunately, Amway Arena is still stuck in the time warp. "I used to go to Stay in School Jams back when I was in middle school here, and the arena is the same today," says Marie on Thirdquartercollapse.com. "The seats don't even have cup holders, the boards at the top don't give complete stats and the concourse isn't wide enough." Still, Orlando fans are dropping fewer dead presidents for phat on-court action than their Raptors and Pacers peers. "The Magic are Central Florida's only real hometown team, and they're something to be proud of," says gatormcd54. Word. The arena? Not so much. The completion of the $480 million Orlando Events Center for fall 2010 should transport fans into the 21st century, but is that really where they want to go? Only if it's to another Finals. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4289687 And my Detroit Lions are a solid 119. And that is up from last year. Oh, how I pity the fans of the other 3, whomever they might be.
  24. quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen:I would like to point out to all you idiots out there that think I am well off here with my start him at PF position. EVERYONE on this board flamed me when I said Ariza should be the starting SG. Everyone said he may have the defense ability but he will never hit a 3 and his jump shot will take a long time to come around. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES EH???? So if you want to bash my idea, be prepared for me to bring this back up and shove your words right back at you if Gortat leaves and we start seeing him hit jumper after Jumper. I will point out that Detroit felt the same way about Okur. That he would never be much of an offensive threat. Just a grossly overpaid back up quality center. I should also point out that we made this same mistake once back when John Gabriel pegged Ben Wallace as a grossly overpaid back up. Ben just went on to win back to back to back defensive player of the year honors. When you have a player with obvious talent in the NBA. You keep him. There is a reason Gortat averaged more Rebounds and Blocks per 48 minutes than Dwight. He has talent. And if he gave you nothin else but defense Magic fans should be happy for that. There is only one basketball. Vince can get his own shot. Lewis at SF can shoot over anyone who guards him. Nelson can take every point guard off the dribble and Dwight cannot be stopped unless double teamed. So saying Gortat is not our best option at PF is preposterous. He is the best available big man out there. Dwight is better equipped to play defense on Power Forwards than Gortat. But give the chance to start together and learn how to play off each other, I do not see the same problems continuing as they are now when they are on the court. They are both smart basketball players and have shown the ability to learn quickly and apply what they learned. There has to be the story of a blind squirrel in here somewhere...
  25. quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen: quote: Originally posted by DuvalMagicFan:makes sense. i personally think we should keep Gortat AND Turk, but that's just me. Well no one would dispute that, but the fact is Carter will command the ball on offense. If you start Gortat, you know we are going to be the toughest team on defense in the league. just look at this years team compared to the one that went to the finals. Compare their defense. PG Nelson = Nelson SG Carter > Lee SF Lewis > Hedo PF Gortat > Lewis C Howard = Howard That is just a comparison on Defense. WE got bigger and better with Vince on defense at the SG position. Lewis is a better defender than Hedo by a mile when he guards the small forwards. Gortat is a better defender than Lewis by a mile when guarding the PF/C position. Defense wins championships. If Gortat was a more polished offensive player last year, we could have played the Lakers a lot tougher on the boards and in the post. It just makes sense The biggest problem with the Lakers we had was getting out rebounded. Now look at the difference in the player stats when it comes to rebounding. PG Nelson = Nelson SG Carter > Lee SF Lewis > Hedo PF Gortat > Lewis C Howard = Howard I have no problem using this lineup. I do not think it is the lineup to use in most matchup situations. Maybe 8-10 minutes a game on average. I also have to disagree with your assessment that Shard is a better defender and rebounder than Hedo. Defensively, they are equals. As rebounders, Hedo is better. And saying that Carter is defensively better than Lee is a stretch also. Just my opinion on those, but it certainly changes the look of your equations. I really do hope we can re-sign Gortat.
