Its Official! Barnes A Magic! [update p.24]

But my opinion is that he has gradually become better over time. Teams saw potential, but did not consider him a critical part of their future. Thus when it came time to make trades, and they needed to add salaries to make the trade meet the salary requirements, he was someone a team would be willing to lose, and the other team saw value in bringing on. It's the Keith Bogans / Mo Evans / Deshaun Stevenson disease. Good enough to be useful to the team, but not good enough to be vital to the team. And Matt Barnes is not vital to the Magic. But he will be useful.

But you blue blood people know Arroyo was truly happy being here and help us a lot. Like him or not this guy did help us and gave it all for his Magic. Arroyo would be fine, but I don't think that this team is going to pay anything more than the vet minimum for another PG. I'm not sure if Carlos would want to settle for that or not.

So you don't really see anyone out their that could do that better then AJ. Plus I have noticed several threads talking about players that would just add to overcrowding not to area's where the Magic need help now. So please point out to me about the thread talking about filling the backup pg slot. .... That's right there isn't any it's all about wing men instead of a dire need for the Magic and that being PG. Here's 3 Discussion 1 Discussion 2 Discussion 3 There's plenty more, but I think these should get the point across. quote: Originally posted by PEC: First one does not refer to pg Quote from Discussion 1 thread starters intro comments "But to fill out the roster, Orlando is looking for a third point guard" quote: Originally posted by PEC: Second one refers to wingman plenty of those threads. Quote from Discussion 2 thread starters intro comments "I know they want another point guard" And the title is "Ya'll sure we're looking for a wing? Vince says...(link)" As in are you sure we're looking for a wing? Maybe its a backup point guard we need? That would be the implication of the statement. quote: Originally posted by PEC: Third one does not refer to pg, but is covering everything. Quote from Discussion 3 thread starters intro comments "We have roughly 1.8 million in MLE money left". "How about a back up point guard?" quote: Originally posted by PEC: So where are those threads referring to backup pg? The last time I checked the Magic (as in Otis) said that he was working on finding a good pg to backup Nelson. So who do y'all think he is after?? Sorry to all others for having to spell this out so meticulously, but the point is there are plenty of threads that were already created discussing the subject of a backup point guard, whether there were additionnal points of discussion in those threads doesn't mean that there are no threads out there "referring to backup pg" like you claim we are without. End of discussion, I will not engage in a needless back and forth any longer on this matter, the evidence has been outlined. Everyone is free to decide on their own. Actually, the real point is that you are not a mod, and your only reason for entering this discussion was to enter into an agitating discussion with PEC. Geez, we're dealing with a bunch of 6 year olds.
  9. quote: Originally posted by T REX:You can't compare anybody at any age to MJ. I can't stand homers like this this and this board is full of them. How does MJ playing and winning at age 33, 34, or 35 have ANYTHING to do with anyone else. I'm sure you both would agree he's freaking MJ, arguably the GOAT. And VC is an alright player/scorer. MJ is able to do things that VC will never be able to do. MY POINT IS JUST BECAUSE MJ DID IT CERTAINLY DOESN'T MEAN VINCE CARTER CAN DO IT. That's what you are trying to say and its pretty freaking stupid. Use someone else like Ray Allen or something. AT least he's more like VC in several ways. Just quit using anything MJ did at any age to try and argue that if MJ could do it the VC can do it. Makes you look stupid. Unfortunately that works both ways. There is no "proof" here either way. It neither proves your theories correct, nor his. Comparing Ray Allen to VC is just, if not more, as ridiculous as your inference that he compared MJ to him. VC is not MJ, that's true. Ray Allen isn't CLOSE to being what VC has been in his career. Their games aren't even similar. You are correct that just because MJ did something it doesn't mean VC can; but it also doesn't mean that he can't. MJ was the best ever, and few will argue that. But that doesn't mean that every aspect of what he did is unattainable by others. He does not have exclusive rights to being effective into his mid-30s. Your opinion is that VC is has likely lost his effectiveness. That's fine to hold that opinion. Time will tell. All the Magic are hoping for is that his effectiveness lasts at least 1 or 2 more seasons. It's a gamble, but I'd rather gamble on a HOFer than a young rookie that everyone thinks is going to be some great player in this league, when really he has yet to prove anything other than he is a solid player.

    Suns buy out Ben Wallace

Hopefully Otis doesn't try getting him because he is a walking hospital pan and honestly we don't need another Grant Hill here. Paying someone the vet minimum makes the Grant Hill comparison weak. I've been a fan of his since his days here, but I agree with you that there is very little left in his tank other than a few flops and 6 fouls, when he is healthy enough to play.
  11. quote: Originally posted by ThuglifeJ:WHOS OUR BACKUP CENTER if we trade Gortat for Battier... JJ. He can play all 5 positions. Seriously though, I don't think Otis pulls the trigger on that deal unless he has a 2nd deal lined up to use the TE (or maybe JJ) to obtain a backup center. Or, there could be a veteran left sitting out in the cold after this season, or who have their contract rescinded, that might be available for the vet minimum. The beauty of the move is that it has bought Otis a lot of time to be very flexible. My biggest question about the TE is, at what point does ownership give Otis permission to add that much more salary onto the payroll, particularly considering the possible luxury tax considerations?

    Otis Smith is the man...

If JJ is being guarded by the PG, that means that the PG has to stay home on JJ. I would be willing to bet that close to half of the strips of Dwight were done by opposing PGs. Dwight did a much better job last year of looking for JJ out of a double team. If the rest of the team would catch on to that, they might find that JJ would have more of an impact on the game. Then it would be in his hands whether the impact is positive or negative. But this organization needs to find out that answer, and they need to find it out by no later than the trading deadline this year.

It's not an arbitrary choice of the mods. It is a rule of the forum based on legal rights of other websites, particularly those that charge a fee. I am one of those that, a week ago, did not believe that the Magic would match Gortat. I'm very glad he did, but I didn't think he would. I also agree with those that are expressing the sentiment that we are not giving enough credit to ownership. Every GM comes with a leash around his neck. Ownership apparently decided to take it off. Reminds me of the quote years ago when George Allen was fired as the GM and head coach of the Redskins. The owner was asked why he fired him, and his response was "When I hired George to build this team, I gave him an unlimited budget. He exceeded it." Hopefully Otis' moves will result in greater success. I think he's been very astute in both building this roster, and in creating future opportunities.
  14. quote: Originally posted by Mac Man:Me believing in Jameer is like dying in a movie It won't happen if him and Dwight wasn't best friend Otis would of been traded the guy but I got respect for Nelson though You know, it would be easier if you would just make a post explaining who on this team or organization you actually like. I'm sure the post would be very short.
  15. It stuns me that this is even a discussion. Otis has spoken out multiple times and said that the Bass and Gortat negotiations have/had nothing to do with each other. What more does Cuban want? Is he really too stupid to read into that statement? GMs have responsibility and answer to their bosses, not to bosses of other teams in the league. To think that anyone would feel otherwise is preposterous. As far as the concept of other teams not wanting to deal with us in the future, same rule above applies. Other GMs have to live by the same rule. When they need a center, they will be calling Otis about Gortat. When they need cap room, they will be calling Otis about the TPE. Can you imagine a GM going to his boss and telling him that the perfect deal is available to them, but Mark Cuban is mad at Otis, so he didn't think he should do the deal? How quick do you think that team would have a new GM? There is not a team in the league that doesn't understand the inherent risk in signing a RFA. Well, okay, apparently there is one....

    The Magic' Roster 2009/10...

quote: Originally posted by Magic Fan 3:RJR, if you think the Celtics (I'm assuming that's your team) are going to do anything with the Magic and Cavs in their way, you're just as stupid as your posts suggest you are. JAJAJA! That said, we'll probably match for Gortat. He's our player so the MLE doesn't apply to him. Then we can sign someone for the part of the MLE not used on Bass, and use the LLE on perhaps a solid 3rd PG. And of course we still have that huge trade exception to use. You honestly think he has a clue as to what MLE and LLE mean?
  17. quote: Originally posted by God hates Magic fans:Bass can't play center!!!!!!!!! an idiotic signing like this shouldn't impact Gortat and i'm sick of us having to play Dwight 40 minutes a night. I hate this move with a passion because we aren't getting barnes and we're changing styles. Just a dumb move Yeah, I know what you mean. The thought of having to watch Dwight play basketball for 40 minutes a game is too much to stomach. And to think Otis filled out our very last roster spot with Bass, and now there is no room to add a center. This post makes so much sense.
  18. quote: Originally posted by yeahright:Bad signing. They could've done much better imo. That's the problem. They can't do any better than that. No one wants to go play there. Right? so we still take on money we don't need to spend. Who will we trade him for? If we get Barnes and Ratliff. Ra is already going to not be getting much minutes. Is it your money that's being spent? If the Magic ownership is willing to pay Gortat 5.9m now for the chance to get a different piece worth 5.9m later, why would that affect you at all? Can you imagine Houston growing so needy for a quality center that they throw in one of their exceptionally talented, defensive minded SF's? It's a dream that keeps me warm at night. Actually, I want no part of Ariza at this point. As stated multiple times though, if a set of trades centered on "Marcin Gortat for Shane Battier" were to happen, I'd personally be willing to drive Marcin to Houston, and then drive Shane back to Orlando. And I live in Maryland. Hopefully they make that deal when the Magic are in town against the Wizards. Sure would save you a lot of time and gas expense.
  20. I'll admit to being surprised if we match Gortat. If they do, I don't ever want to see a post by anyone ever again accusing DeVos of being cheap. That label is already unfair, and this would put the final nail in that coffin.

    Hedo says leaving was easy

Wow. If ignorance is bliss, can we just rename this message board to "The Happy Place"? Hedo did nothing wrong. He exercised his options according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement that the players and the league have agreed to. He didn't break any laws. He didn't bad mouth anyone. He made a choice according to what was best for his own life. None of us are walking in his shoes, so for us to pass judgment on his character is ridiculous beyond words. And for those that suggest that they know what they would do if they were in his shoes, your take is absurd. You are not, nor will you ever be, in a position to make the kind of choice that he was given. You only embarrass yourself with such mind-numbing comments. Hedo played hard while he was here. Was I his biggest fan? Nope. Am I happy that Otis replaced him with VC? Yes. Do I have any reason to be upset with Hedo's decision to take the offer from Toronto? That question is too dumb to even deserve a response.

Do you think Otis will match the offer sheet Gortat received from Dallas? 2.) Do you think the likely possible signing of Bass will effect his decision? 3.) If you answered yes to question 2 what would your answer be then in regards to matching Marcin? Some threads are just so entertaining. The thread is very specific in asking what WILL happen, not what we think SHOULD happen. So what happens? We get a bunch of posts on the latter, repeating the same stuff that is in the other 500 Bass and Gortat threads. I'll go with: 1) No. 2) No. The offer to Gortat was way to steep for a backup center. I have never seen any indication that they would use him a lot at PF, so I'm guessing that they won't pay that much salary for a 10-15 MPG player, regardless of whether or not they get Bass. Oh, and Junkie, the poll thing is very easy to use. Fear not.
