Has Courtney Lee lived up to your expectations?

quote: Originally posted by murphy13:he has exceeded my expectations, although that wasnt difficult as he was a second round prospect for every other team in the league but ours. but, hes worth what we are paying him. good pickup! He was predicted to go in the first round in every single mock draft. Murphy you never cease in your backhanded compliments of CLee. --Rojogrande
  2. I would say I am a mix of Rafer, Jameer, and CLee. The Rafer in me is my passing and ball distribution. I averaged about 12 pts and 11 assists per game my junior year of high school. The Jameer is my ball handling. I am not near as good as Jameer is. But I mimic him in a lot of ways. Dribbling the ball low to make it a lot more difficult for a defender to strip me. I was also a very consistent outside shooter. My defense and FT shooting is where CLee comes into play. When I actually put my mind into guarding someone and locking them down then I do. I have active hands to interrupt passing lanes. Although I can sometimes get screened off and don't have near the speed that Courtney does to be able to make up for it. I was always a 90+% FT shooter. I tore my knee up when I was younger so I am no longer very athletic. I could touch rim when I was 16. Now at 22 and can barely get backboard. I am 5'9" by the way. My coach also used to always get mad if I didn't score over 20 in a game. And I had to run an extra suicide drill for every point under I was. Which happened often. Because I am the type of player I would rather have an awesome pass to set up a team mate then to score myself. --Rojogrande

Magic Vs. Suns Game Thread 3-03-09 @ 7:00 PM

It seems like for the past two plus weeks we have been seeing different players. Not that he played badly tonight, i thought a SITM would suffice though. This is all for conversational purposes so please dont take anything too seriously that I say. Offensively, he did ok, mainly because he didnt clog up the offense...but not stock up worthy, especially since redick equaled his output in one third the time. I am not trying to make this about sg vs sg though. Lee's defense, however, with the exception of the late block/shot alteration after the magic already pulled away tonight...has been steadily getting worse since the middle of february. he is getting blown by on iso's by just about everyone now. and his team oriented D was never really there. granted, he is filling the sg role well(which is rather non existent in our scheme), so i am not complaining. it just makes me wonder why you are inflating his output? Long story short, I believe everyone has accepted and adapted to their roles on this team. With the exception of the enigma that is MP. I just dont understand what is going on with him. That being said, I am happy with the SG tandem of Lee and Redick. I hope MP comes around. But, to tell you the truth...I dont think he is a SG, I believe he is a SF in our system. He can still guard the other teams best perimeter player, but he doesnt fit offensively in the backcourt for us. Otherwise, I like your analysis. One last thing, I will be pissed if otis cant ink gortat long term! You and I will have to agree to disagree, I think defensively he was much better than that tonight. Plus, it's not like I went nuts over him, he was near the bottom of the Stock Up list. Sportscenter covered Shaq's flopping and even SVG's post-game reaction to it. The anchor said, "Imagine if Dwight flopped on Shaq? Shaq would of talked about it for weeks." LOL hilarious. I suppose its been a collective thought on my part and not so much about a single performance. Like I said he didnt play poorly afterall. But, his play and your ranking arent consistent really as he clearly deserved a stockup last game against philly, yet his production waned in every way tonight compared to philly with the exception of rebounding...and I thought the mantra of SU/SD was for game to game progress. But all in all, like usual I agree with your overall analysis and more importantly enjoy reading it. Ok murphy, I have held off saying anything to you for most of the season because I just figured you might come around and I didn't want to be a homer. But seriously, what does CLee have to do to get you off his ***. Even in the past when he has played great games you still complain about something he did more so then any other player on the team. First off when you talk about him getting beat on ISO's let me explain something to you that you seem to be missing. Courtney 9 times out of 10 gets the assignment of guarding the other teams most prolific scorer. These are guys that opposing teams run alot of screens for. I have seen teams run 3 or 4 screens on one play to shed Lee off of his man. Sometimes he gets by them with no trouble, other times he gets hung up. Which is the purpose of a screen. So when these ISO's are run and CLee is screened by an opposing player. It is his team mates who have to hedge out and slow Courtney's man down until he can catch up to the play, which is usually pretty fast. That is why ISO's and screens require TEAM defense to stop them. Alot of times CLee's team mates don't hedge out like they should or switch off when needed and that leaves him hung out to dry. Now I am not saying Courtney has never had a defensive breakdown himself. All players do. But more so it is the Magic's team defense that is inconsistant. I hear you talk alot also about Courtney being a poor team defensive player himself. Once again not sure where you are drawing that from. You are the only person I have ever heard say that. On this board or any other. He helps out on defense every game. He switches off, hedges, whatever is needed. Now I know I sound like a huge homer in this post. Partly because I am. But I am objective as well. When Courtney makes a mistake or has a bad game I will be right there with the rest of you all on here complaining about it while picking it apart. I am just tired of hearing you complain about how bad Courtney's defense is every game. No matter what he does. I will wait for your rebutle. --Rojogrande

So, now what do you think will be the Magic's record finishing up the season? **Sarcasm detected** So I'm confused with your last question. Are you saying the magic are going to be a loose team in the ECF or NBA finals? Why is there no option for them to lose either series? You must be rather confident. Just messing with ya knappy. --Rojogrande

    Standings

Well KG injured his knee last night in the Celts loss to the Jazz. Depending on the severity that will help us alot assuming this SKIP trade works as well for us as everyone thinks it is going to. --Rojogrande

    Courtney Lee

quote: Originally posted by Lawyers,Guns.and Money:I think that Lee and Alston in the starting 5 will make this team the contender that they were before Jameer got hurt. ++++1 I think MP is much more affective coming off of the bench. It seems to get him more motivated. He plays much better after a flow has already been built in a game. --Rojogrande

    Quick question...

Does anyone know anywhere online that I could watch the Magic Insider on CLee that was shown on Sun Sports tonight? I live in KY and obviously don't get that particular FS channel on my cable without ordering a big subscription package. I know they had a brief clip of it on the Sun Sports website. I would just like to watch all of it. A link would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --Rojogrande

Game Thread: Bobcats @ Magic 2/17 (7 PM)

Well not to defend PEC here because I rarely agree with her thoughts on JJ. But JJ did play a nano-second of OT. He came in on the offensive side with like less then 30 seconds left. He sank a FT before Lee hit the 2 to seal the game on the same possesion. He was pulled before Courtney's second FT however. But MP wasn't in there either. Courtney is the SG that SVG trusts the most in the 4th quarter. If a big 3 is needed he goes to JJ. Because that is what JJ is on the team to do. --Rojogrande

C-Lee at point guard will bring us back to the top

From watching CLee for 4 years in college I can tell you that his talents on the offensive side of the ball are not being used properly. I could understand that to an extent before Jameer got hurt because Courtney was the 5th option on the floor witht he starters. However, the offense that SVG runs with the Magic is not ideal for a SG like Courtney. He is a slasher. He was in college. He slashes and pulls up for the midrange jumper if the defense sags off. Or if they are tight he gets by them with his speed and takes it to the rack. As far as his 3 point shooting. Courtney is not a spot up shooter. Let me repeat NOT a spot up shooter. He shoots a much better percentage from downtown when he is coming off of screens or in fastbreak transition. In the magic's offense the SG on the floor tends to be regulated to the corners without much off the ball movement. I am telling you if when Dwight is not on the floor. If the team ran more of a motion offense with alot of screens for the guards. CLee could get 15-20 points a night if given the opportunity to be the player he is capable of being. I am sure some of you might think I am being homerish. But I will defend the same position for MP or Redick as far as shooting off of screens and not being spot up shooters. MP is a slasher as well. If the Magic really want to have a shot. SVG needs to be a little more flexible in letting the SG's do a little more on the offensive side of the ball. Because the PG position of AJ and Lue is not gonna net us the points we have become familiar with from that position. And the slack needs to be picked up somewhere else. --Rojogrande

    Is it just me or...

has anyone else noticed the last few games Turk being rather short with CLee. I mean even since day one it has seemed that Turk would hardly pass the ball to Courtney. But the last few games anytime Turk makes a mistake and Courtney is around it seems he partly blames CLee for it. I was at the Indy game and there was a play where Granger beat Turk off the dribble. CLee came over to help but Turk was kinda in his way and Granger scored and got fouled by Hedo. Hedo then turned around and started going off on Courtney (no one else) for not being there to help him out. I saw that same reaction from Turk again tonight a couple times. I know Courtney did not have a great game offensively tonight and made a few mistakes. But what is Hedo's deal with CLee. Other players on the team make mistakes and he doesn't have near the same reaction with anyone else. With Jameer out the last thing that needs to be going on is any kinda of discrepancy among team mates. I do not want to start some kinda of out cry. But if something is going on between the two of them it needs to be resolved and asap. And I can assure you that Courtney is not the type of person to be causing problems. Not meaning to put the blame on Turk. It's just not in Courtney's personality or character. As shown throughout the season he knows his role on the team and does what is asked of him. He is not the type of person to over step the coaches boundries. --Rojogrande
