I don’t care if he cuts it, as long as he does something to keep it out of his face when he’s playing.

Fair enough, I guess that depends on people's opinions of Miller as a prospect. I don't have him in the same tier as Scoot.

Part of why I was ALMOST glad we didn't get #3 or #4 - I have reservations about Miller's judgement and maturity as a person, but his talent as a prospect is such that passing him up would be very difficult to justify. No such issues with Wemby or Scoot. Judgement on who your friends are and how you act when you are with them can become a cause for concern. Ja is currently proving my point on this issue.

I don’t think they’re gonna put resources into that. It was sketchy, sure, and I’m sure other teams would have given Washington more for Beal than Phoenix did. But the difference is Beal’s no trade clause. Washington didn’t have the leverage to take the best deal. If Beal said I’m only waiving my no trade clause for Phoenix, which I’m sure he did, then Washington’s only moves were either hold him and call his bluff or trade with Phoenix. I think the Wizards flubbed it and rushed the trade, but no trade clauses are sketchy by design.

Exactly, the no trade clause tied their hands; they either had to take what was offered, or not trade him at all.

I'm still of the opinion Charlotte trades Scoot + other assets for Zion. Charlotte needs a big to run with LaMelo.

I’m going in a completely different direction. Charlotte picks Scoot, and trades Lamelo to Phoenix for Ayton. Possible a few other pieces to make the numbers work.

    Your point being?

That I am very leery of drafting a tall PG who can't shoot, but is supposed to be a really good defender and passer. Payton had a very similar draft profile as what you initially described. I hope for his sake that Ant has a better work ethic, and works hard to maximize his potential, but Payton is a cautionary example of what COULD be.

The discussion at 6 seems to be Whitmore/Hendricks/Ausar but Spinella's new mock has us taking Ant Black at 6. It's tricky because of the lack of jumper but 6'7 with defense + playmaking very rarely fails and there's an argument that he's both the best perimeter defender and passer in the draft.

    Two words - Elfrid Payton

  7. So, here are my thoughts on the moves to make for this roster over the summer. With pick #6 - Taylor Hendricks, and pick #11 Jordan Hawkins. Guarantee or exercise the club options on Fultz, G Harris, and Bitadze. Decline the options or waive Michael Carter-Williams, Bol Bol, and Admiral Schofield.  Sign D Schroder to 4/$48M using the MLE, and re-sign Moe Wagner starting at $3.5M. All this still brings us in at about $127M, or about $7M under the cap, we punt on any decision for Isaac until the end of training camp or December, as we can guarantee for the full $17.4M or release him and only pay $7.6M. That makes our rotation look like this:

    Fultz/Schroder/Anthony

    Suggs/Harris/Hawkins

    F Wagner/Houston/Okeke

    Banchero/Isaac/Hendricks

    Carter/Bitadze/M Wagner

This gives you great roster flexibility to go big or go small, and leaves you cap room to make moves if you have to for injury reasons (Okeke, Isaac). You aren't forced to bring Hendricks or Hawkins along too quickly, but you can easily move either into the backup SF role as well if they are outplaying Houston/Okeke. Schroder and (hopefully) continued improvements in Anthony/Suggs will strengthen your backcourt rotation. I would also say re-sign Keyon Harris to a 2-way spot, and if you can manage it, draft Podziemski with #36 and give him the other 2-way spot. I actually think that every single one of these moves is do-able. The only snag might be Hawkins going before #11, but I think you could plug in Gradey Dick or Cason Wallace into that #11 spot and do almost the same idea.

    Thoughts?

"Here's the short explanation: as the Lakers only have Early Bird Rights, they cannot pay Reaves more than 105% of the previous season's average player salary. All told, that means the Lakers can only offer Reaves around $53 million over four years. Other teams, however, are not limited by this restriction. They must make Reaves an offer the Lakers can legally match—which would start at that $11.4 million figure and rise only slightly in the second season—but those restrictions lift in the third and fourth season of the deal, when he could make anything up to his max. For teams with cap space, this isn't especially cumbersome. The total amount Reaves could get as a restricted free agent is roughly $99 million over four years, but a team signing Reaves with space could format that deal in a more traditional structure because they are not bound by Early Bird Rights. But the Lakers? If they match such an offer sheet, the deal has to be backloaded to abide by the Arenas Provision."

After reading this article, I am all about going after one of the Laker's guards in free agency, just not the one most people are talking about. I think it might be the time to go after Dennis Schroder. We could offer him most (or all, if necessary) of the MLE to bring him in, which wouldn't put him completely out of their range, but with the potential for putting them at the hard-cap, it would be something they would have to really struggle over. It might mean they have to choose between re-signing Reaves and letting go of Schroder. I think he would be a good addition for us, but I will be the first to admit that screwing the Lakers would be an extremely attractive side benefit as well.

Some cap stuff while I'm bored on my lunch break at work:

    Projected cap: $134m

Our current salaries (including team options and non guaranteed): $107m

Picks 6 and 11 (providing we make and keep both selections) project to be a combined salary of just over $11m I believe.

Gives us $16m in cap space at present.

Could easily clear another $7m by waiving Bol before his guaranteed date and not picking up the team options on MCW or Schofield. Plus another $2m by declining the Goga team option also.

So if we needed to, we could comfortably get to $25m in cap space without waiving Gary Harris who, if we waived him before the deadline, would give us an additional $13m.

    Taking us to $38m.

Even if we spent all our cap space we can still bring back Mo Wagner with his early bird rights should we want to do so, so that won't be an issue either.

Honestly I think now might be the time to beef the bench up. Especially given the injury history of WCJ, Fultz, Suggs, Gary Harris and Isaac (presuming we head into the season with all of those guys). I'd love us to throw $15- 20m at a quality free agent, use the room exception (2 years 11m, maybe over pay someone who'd otherwise sign with a contender for the minimum) to bring in another vet roleplayer for the bench and then bring back Wagner at like 2 years 7m.

I'm thinking we maybe start to change the complexion of our roster a little from like a bench full of young or inexperienced guys who we're kind of hoping develop in the background and in spot minutes to a couple less of those guys replaced with more established veterans (not necessarily old guys but not young and inexperienced) who can come in and play a role if needed but who are still on short, flexible contracts.

I’m okay with that in theory, but the problem comes from the specifics of who is available and what it will take to get them.

TRADE at 6. Trail Blazers (via Magic): Jarace Walker, PF, Houston

Portland Trail Blazers receive: Markelle Fultz, Jalen Suggs, Jonathan Isaac, No. 6 pick, No. 11 pick and 2025 first-round pick (top-three protected)

    Orlando Magic receive: Damian Lillard

If the Blazers keep the No. 3 pick, then Lillard can probably start packing his bags. He doesn't want to wait for prospects to develop, and Portland's incoming youth might appreciate not having the pressure of his ticking clock hanging above their heads.

So, if that pick doesn't go, Lillard likely does, in this case serving as the fast-forward button for an ascending Magic team that played winning basketball for the campaign's final four months-plus.

If Portland leans into a rebuild, it could view Jarace Walker as a tone-setting defender with significant offensive upside. His ceiling is tough to set without knowing how his shooting and handle will develop, but his floor is elevated thanks to his playmaking, finishing and defensive versatility. He does a lot of things that helps teams win, even if he's not always the primary reason for that success.

This trade would also get the Blazers their third pick in this lottery, plus a future first with light protection. Markelle Fultz and Jalen Suggs would have ample opportunities to lock down a long-term role on a backcourt with Amen Thompson and Anfernee Simons. Jonathan Isaac would mostly make the money work, but he's theoretically still interesting if he could ever shake his injury issues for good.

Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report …would you ?

I love Dame a lot, but hell no on this trade, it is trading away too much long-term for a potentially very short short-term upgrade.

I wouldn't trade WCJ for Simons straight up, but with our picks to get him and Scoot I'm all in. I have faith that management can get us a starting center via trade.

I'm old school, you don't trade big for small unless there is an all-star caliber small involved or the big has left you no choice. I just think WCJ's career is still on an upward trajectory, and I think he is exactly the type of player to make us regret it later if we trade him.

  12. I’m a little bit amused that as often as this forum overrates our own players, it seems that we are now underrating just how good WCJ really is. He just finished averaging 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists per game with 59% fg shooting; all at the age of 24. Oh yeah, 35.6% on 3-pt shooting too.

Agree. And the free agent pool at the 5 this year sucks. It's essentially Jakob Poeltl and a 35 year old Brook Lopez and that's it.

Part of why I think we may just guarantee Goga - his play at the end of the year was decent, he's still young and learning/improving, and he's reasonably priced. I wouldn't mind picking up a vet backup who can step in if WCJ is out (a la Robin Lopez a couple years ago). Someone who is a good practice guy, positive influence, and okay to spend a lot of time on the bench. In other words, not DHoward and probably not Vuc. I don't think either would be happy being backup/3rd string.

I'm continually impressed with the mental toughness and clutch game of Jimmy Butler. That game last night was just cold.

I think if you're looking for a guy who is most "MJ-like" today (or Kobe-like), I think it isn't LeBron but Jimmy Butler. He's not a showman. He's there to play, to get in his opponents' heads, and the just win in whatever capacity on offense or defense.

He shows up when it counts and it's just a treat to watch.

He definitely exhibits the "Mamba mentality"

    Does Cole Anthony not exist?

Cole is not a starting PG, he is a shooting guard in a point guard body. He doesn't have a PG mentality of getting everyone else going and controlling the game. He tends to be too focused on his own shot. I think Cole is at his best playing as your 6th man. He has that alpha dog attitude, and should dominate other backup PG/SG matchups. We didn't have a reliable backup PG at the start of the season because he was starting, which didn't really work out for him or the team.

If we couldn’t win I’m pleased with the outcome. Didn’t want Houston or Detroit to win because of how bad they were, and there probably isn’t a better coach pairing for Wemby than Pop.

Hoping Anthony Black is there at 6

No more guys who need to learn how to shoot, please.
