Carter can opt out of the last year of his contract ($16.4 million) and become a free agent, so it might make sense for the Nets to move him now rather than risk losing him for nothing. The Magic, Grizzlies and Clippers are said to be interested, but they would want a guarantee from Carter that he's not going to leave. This all but rules out a deal for Gasol, as much as Nets GM Rod Thorn would love to have the 7-footer in his lineup.
Orlando, which can offer Grant Hill's expiring contract, seems far more promising. During All-Star Weekend, Rockets forward Tracy McGrady said he hadn't talked to Carter but felt that his cousin would probably like to play in Orlando with Dwight Howard. "He built a home down there, grew up 25-30 minutes away from there," McGrady said. "I think it would make them a contender in the East for years to come."
