The NBA's Best Big Man (Ever?) - Hoopsworld

isn't andrew bynum the best big man in the league? he's a combination of wilt, kareem and shaq... at least according to laker fans LoL

Off Topic Question: 2010 Free Agent Class

now, this is interesting and it's not just the 2010 offseason. i just asked myself who the top players will be in the future and where they could end up. 1st tier: Derrick Rose - Chicago Bulls, expires 2012 (rookie contract) LeBron James - Cleveland Cavaliers, expires 2010 Dwyane Wade - Miami Heat, expires 2010 Chris Paul - New Orleans Hornets, expires 2012 Dwight Howard - Orlando Magic, expires 2012 Greg Oden - Portland Trailblazers, expires 2011 (rookie contract) Chris Bosh - Toronto Raptors, expires 2010 2nd tier: Carmelo Anthony - Denver Nuggets, expires 2011 Andrew Bynum - LA Lakers, expires 2012 OJ Mayo - Memphis Grizzlies, expires 2012 (rookie contract) Al Jefferson - Minnesota Timberwolves, expires 2013 Kevin Durant - Oklahoma City Thunder, expires 2011 (rookie contract) Brandon Roy - Portland Trailblazers, expires 2010 (rookie contract) Deron Williams - Utah Jazz, expires 2012 now, we see that the 2010 free agency will be very strong but the 2012 FA won't be any weaker. after the lewis & nelson disasters i don't see any of those guys in orlando. i more worried to see dwight leaving orlando in 2012

Hollinger:Teams following Orlando's "Big Ball" example

it's easy, smallball dominates the regular season but if you wanna win in the playoffs, you need to become big. but i agree with the last two posters who said that we aren't really big. yeah, we have size but i think it isn't just about size. i think playing big also means to slow down the offense and play great defense while smallball is more of something like a run&gun offense.

    The "other 29 teams" thread.

some teams i'd like to mention: the Boston Celtics and the L.A. Lakers are of course the favourites this season so i won't mention them to much. the Detroit Pistons, how good are they with iverson instead of billups? with AI they got a real scorer, something the pistons have lacked before but he's not a real PG so prince has to step up. he's doing a pretty good job so far but i think they need a real PG besides him. with AI coming of the bench? could marbury be the answer? there was some talk that tinsley will get cut too but i don't think so because of his contract. the Cleveland Cavaliers or if you want the cleveland lebrons, are in a very interesting situation. besides james they have an offensive big man in ilgauskas, a defender in wallace (who isn't that good anymore but still), some scorers with mo williams and delonte west on the 1 and 2. besides a solid starting5 they have a solid bench with varejao, gibson and most important about $20mill in expirings. i see them trading for VC (wally + pavlovi? for carter + s.williams?) and there'd still be snow's $7mill expiring. with some smart moves the cavs could definitly become the team to beat this year. the Utah Jazz are another team i like. they are a defending SF with a 3pt shoot away from being a real contender. what do they have? how 'bout one of the best PGs in the league in deron williams, boozer's inside scoring, the best shooting big man in okur, a pretty good young SG in brewer and depth (millsap, korver, knight, miles,...). but the difference maker on this team is andrei kirilenko, a guy who does it all. since basketball is a team sport he is an underrated offensive player but not a scorer. i like the idea of him being the 6th man. the surprise of the season is or could be kostas koufos. i could see him developing into a "mehmet okur with defense"-type of player. he's still 19yo so it's maybe a little bit to early for him but if he continues to improve i could see the jazz dealing memo for the SF i talked earlier in this post and cap space. boozer and millsap are expiring and the jazz will have a very hard time to resign them both while avoiding the lux tax. with harpring and almond they have 2 other trade assets. the last team i'd want to mention are of course the Portland Trailblazers. greg oden, brandon roy and lamarcus aldridge are the future of the franchise. this year they added rudy fernandez, nicolas batum and jerryd bayless to their roster and there still webster, outlaw, frye, rodriguez, diogu and the veterans blake and przybilla. wow, do i smell a dynasty? kevin pritchard impressem me from offseason to offseason more and more. in 2006 first he trades the draft rights to tyrus thomas and viktor khryapa for lamarcus aldridge and then he trades telfair and an expiring for the draft rights to foye and filler and then he sends foye to minny for brandon roy. in 2007 he got lucky in the lottery and drafted greg oden with the 1st overall pick which was a slam dunk but then he bought the 24th pick from the suns and drafted rudy fernandez. this year he trades up for jerryd bayless while losing only jack, mcroberts and #13 and then he bought the 27th pick from NOH which he traded with #33 for nicolas batum. he also traded the right to omar asik for 2 future 2nd round pick. oh and btw, they still have the rights to kopponen and freeland, two nice trade assets beside lafrentz' expiring. wow, this guy must have some really embarrassing pics of david stern and all the other GMs or he's just a god. i have no doubt that he'll find a great PG, their only need.

    a trade with the blazers?

i've been reading the blazers message boards on realgm and i saw that the fans would love to get hedo and since they are loaded with young players i thought we could make a pretty good deal with them. of course, it would take a superman to get roy, oden, aldridge, rudy and probably batum but there are still some pretty good players on their roster. i was thinking more of something like this: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?playe...2~19~19~19&te=&cash= this would give us a true PG, a athletic scoring SF and a finesse PF. and all of them are still pretty young. rodriguez/nelson/johnson pietrus/lee/nelson outlaw/lewis/pietrus lewis/frye/battie howard/battie/foyle

I say pass on this one. We need a real PF, not a wing PF. my thought was that with hedo gone someone else would have to run our offense. nelson isn't a real PG and never will be but sergio is. and btw, trust me jameer would look much better off the bench. and shard, we all know how awful his defense was in seattle where he played SF and how much he improved last year playing PF in orlando. coincidence? i don't think so. i think he would be killed by the SF around the league. it's much easier for him to guard the weaker and quicker big man. and on offense he plays SF anyway.

We are finally backt to being a bad team with bad contracts where we belong!!!!

quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:All of those players are on 2 year deals. So you're saying you'd rather have a 3rd string point guard, a backup PF, and a backup SF then Steve Nash and future CAP space for the next two years. I don't know how to respond to that at all. i think bayless has the potential to become a great combo guard who comes off the bench, a better version of jameer nelson. frye is a good backup, a 2nd version of aldridge. outlaw is the only one of these three who's probably going to be traded. on the other side, nash is still a very good PG but he's not the same guy that won two MVP's and no championship and he's declining. hill is a sf and would be great off the bench for them but not at any price. diaw doesn't have a 2yr deal, his locked up until 2012. in my eyes he's overrated and is just a bad contract. i don't think he'd be that good on any other team besides phoenix and maybe GSW. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:I'm assuming you mean don't give it to just anyone on the roster, and again, you're still missing my point, and I'm thinking more and more you're doing it intentionally because you *really* like talking about how much you think Jameer sucks. That's fine, but my point is that if Otis thinks Jameer is the point of the future, he's going to get locked up long term. That's not news, and you're being stupid if you think it is. ok, if otis thinks so then he must be right. but only the court tells the true story and jameer has 5yrs left to prove me wrong and otis right. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:Ok, cupcake, it was 5 players, and the logic you're using is incredibly skewed. I don't have the exact salary numbers in front of me, but it was something like: ePat: 3.3m Keyon: 3.3m Evans: 1.6m Augustine: .7m Arroyo: 4m At the time of the deadline, both Carlos and Keyon were in the rotation due to Jameer's injuries, and Evans was our starting 2. If we eliminate the notion that we were going to get rid of 3 rotation players heading into a playoffs as a third seed, since it's insane, that leaves us with 4m in expirings we could have traded. What exactly do you think 4m and expirings would land us? Probably something decent, perhaps, but since 4m isn't the payscale of disgruntled stars or even disgruntled quality role players, it'd likely mean we'd be getting below average talent or we'd be forced to mortgage draft picks. And lets be honest, you'd complain like hell if he'd done that too. i don't know much about the arena sitation so i won't comment this. ok, arroyo and dooling were in the rotation last year, so what? as somebody said, rome wasn't build in a day. i'd rather have traded them for a useful piece for the future than kept them for the playoffs and lost them for nothing after that

We are finally backt to being a bad team with bad contracts where we belong!!!!

quote: Originally posted by stan van luigi:With the combination of bad contracts, lack of trades/bad trades and a reactive rather than proactive management the magic will be good for a while but winning a championship is nowhere in sight, despite Otis assurance when he took over that would be his top priority. We are finally backt to being a bad team with bad contracts where we belong!!!!

Here's the first one I came across on their trades board: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?playe...1~21~21~21&te=&cash= I think that seems reasonable, don't you? And you can't see it, but I'm laughing uncontrollably, particularly since later on in the thread a poster says that his team is giving up too much. That'd be fine, except he thinks the team giving up too much is Portland. my quick analysis: i'd agree with this poster, this deal is horrible for the blazers. it doesn't make any real sense for them. ok, they need a PG but is a 35yo steve nash who's declining the answer? is he worth giving up on bayless, frye and outlaw (i can't see neither of them starting for portland in the future though)? grant hill isn't the youngest anymore too and i don't think that diaw's contract will attract the blazers at all. they could do much better than that. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:B) When did "creative financing" turn into the "I voted for the war before I voted against it" of this board? He made a comment that was clearly lip-service to the media and/or Darko's agent, and blew it off later. That's not new, or especially interesting. And no, I'm not saying that he did it for 2012 expirings, and you'd have to be a complete half-wit to think I was. I'm saying that you're skittering around the board like a frightened animal on a hot surface and spouting out nonsense like these contracts are indefinite. They are long, certainly, and you may not like jameer, but locking up your point guard of the future long term isn't exactly news. Hell, Dwight's contract is just as long as Jameer's; do you think Otis screwed our cap flexibility by giving him a 5 year extension? you can't compare dwight, our franchise player, the best big man in the league and a MVP candidate with jameer a SG in an undersized PG body, who's our 4th scoring option, who can't run our offense and who can't defend. i ok with giving the franchise player a 6yr deal but don't give it to anyone on your roster. quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:C) The luxury tax is a punitive level set each year to punish teams for....oh I get it. Christ on a stick, dude, the team has gone into the luxury tax before with far less star power as impetus to do so. To suggest that they're resisting doing it now until the new arena opens has validity because it's a suggestion that makes financial sense; to suggest that they won't do it ever again is to ignore the team's financial history. we'll see but don't take it for granted. last year we had 3-4 expirings worth about $12mill and we let them all expire.

If they got shorter, then in a few years, they'd become giant expiring contracts we could potentially trade. It's a pity that they'll continue to be 5 year deals forever! so we signed them just to have huge expirings in 2013? that's "creative financing"? quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:C) It also really sucks that they're getting rid of free agency after this year. Because of that, we'll no longer have teams looking to get rid of angry stars before losing them for nothing, or trying to trade lots of young talent for expiring contracts. That could've really helped us when all these overblown contracts become valuable trade commodities, such as the close to 15m we have expiring after next season, that we could've used to pick up solid role players on bad deals. How unfortunate for us that there won't be Free Agency any more! what's the lux tax?
