  1. Article on revisions to the draft lottery on Yahoo, Dwyer echoed what a lot of people have said on the board.

    This sounds so familiar

In capitulating to a supposed media firestorm about tanking, the NBA is underestimating the intelligence of both its general managers (in previous seasons, not exactly a bad idea) and its fans. Of course paying customers want their teams to be very good and straightaway, but let’s give the diehards some credit, here. We’re at a point in NBA fandom where followers understand that shortsighted, win-now moves can often hamstring a team for years at a time. Fans in Milwaukee even raised billboards last season begging their team’s front office to stop going for mediocre players in the hopes of grabbing a low playoff seed for what seemed like the 14th time in 15 years.

Fans in Philadelphia want to see Joel Embiid play this year, and they wanted to see Nerlens Noel play last season, but they’ll be more than happy with the team’s outlook heading into 2015-16, with five lottery picks on the team’s roster, one former Rookie of the Year and heaps of cap space to use on complimentary players who are in line with their young roster’s age and skill set. Sixers fans don’t want their team to go after Jodie Meeks. Again.

You know what’s not a problem? Danny Ainge fleecing Billy King. Sam Hinkie taking advantage of New Orleans’ impatience, that ain’t a problem. Rob Hennigan intelligently figuring out how to restart a franchise without a 2012 lottery pick already in hand is not a problem. These are smart executives taking mindful, long-term approaches to rebuilding when an obvious solution (or, in many cases, a future problem disguised as a solution) isn’t available. Losses will result, and chances will be taken, but history has proven that if properly executed this is the right way to build, even on top of salted crops.

  2. And to add another question......With all the Lebron stuff (great story by the way) and the NBA seemingly reaching all kinds of high-level popularity and all of this free-agent talk and teams around the league(for the most part) bolstering their respective rosters.....

For us, Henny has taken away Nelson and Affalo and added Gordon( times 2) and Payton.

Now, the Magic seem to be finished as there is no mention of anything in regards to our team....anywhere on the net.

As a Magic fan I feel as though I'm losing something....

How much did you hear about the Frye and Gordon moves? Who is out there that in your opinion would help the team enough to satisfy you and still would not damage cap space to the point it would prevent us from being an option for a big time FA?

  3. Can I predict the future ???...Obviously not....But I'd be willing to bet you on both of those questions !!!

Are you as sure about them as you were about JJ and Javaris, and about getting Gilbert?

I would be willing to bet on both of those. How about this, if I win, you stop trolling the board with every negative article or portion of an article you can find. If I lose, you stop trying to annoy the rest of the board in an attempt to do nothing more than be the board contrarian, how does that sound, it's a win win.

  4. I think what's gonna kill Henny is based on our current roster we are gonna suck for the 3rd year in a row...probably in the lottery again (which isn't a bad thing with all the great bigs in next years draft)....Anybody that lives in Florida knows how fickle fans here are...If you aren't winning nobody cares...I've seen Magic forums around the internet voicing repeatedly how they are not re-newing season tickets because of this.

How long can the Magic organization sustain like that ????....At some point the wins gotta come.

I thought my God-like statement was clear but I meant that based on the poll it seems this forum thinks he is for the most part mistake-free (like a God, Hercules, maybe j/k ?)

And those same fair weathered fans will be right back the moment we start winning. The franchise has made it past rebuilds and mediocre teams that were far more un-watchable than what we have been our will be. What is more important? Getting them back now or building for a decade of teams in contention?

  5. I think our problem was that we thought Gordon + Payton was greater than Exum + anything else at pick 12.

Additionally, it is true we could have had an amazing back-court of Exum and Oladipo, but our defensive line would have been extremely weak interiorly with Vuc manning the middle. Instead, we opted for Oladipo and Payton (whom additionally was touted as being able to get into the lane "whenever he wanted," like Exum) and we got a guy who in AG who will ultimately become a defensive anchor in this league at either F spot, citing his work ethic, athleticism, and clear ability to probably gain another 20-30 lbs of muscle if he hits the weight room with that frame.

I'm not saying that we might not kick ourselves later on down the road (as I do think Exum will be an All-Star), it's just that I think Payton will become a better overall two-way team player (i.e. defense and passing will be better, with scoring slightly lower than Exum)... two-way players lead to championships.

We all want that star, but what we ultimately should want instead is a championship. I think we get that better with Payton + AG rather than Exum + ______.

Exactly. If you believe that Payton is a star PG and you can get him and a good project it's smart to get both rather than one good player and lesser project at 12.

  6. Magic fans have already been discussing the Olidipo/Noel debate here....With, I think a majority choosing Noel (see comments below article)....I'm going to post this guys comments because I really like the way he expressed it;

    http://www.orlandopinstripedpost.com/2014/7/5/5873823/should-hennigan-have-drafted-noel-last-year

The people that were against drafting Noel for the most part said that because he was injured....Right now he isn't.

How much time has Noel had to work on his game vs NBA level players and under the direction of NBA coaches vs Gordon?

  7. ESPN Grades for Dante Exum and Elfrid Payton after they completed their 1st games in professional summer league...

Dante Exum, Utah Jazz | Grade: A-

Hype machine, activate! Comparisons to a young Kobe Bryant, Penny Hardaway and Brandon Roy were flying around after Exum’s first game, and his displays of smooth athleticism and skill were often breathtaking. Although there were better overall performances elsewhere, no one flashed more star potential than Exum did. With his vision and first step, he has lead guard written all over him.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/69678/las-vegas-summer-league-day-2-grades

    Elfrid Payton, Magic

The learning curve from Louisiana-Lafayette might be a little stiff for Payton, if first impressions are to be believed. Payton struggled in his debut; he turned the ball over four times in 17 minutes and scored just two points on 1-for-4 shooting. He showed plenty of athleticism, however, and dished out a game-high five assists. But he struggled at times to bring the ball up the floor against smaller guards such as Philadelphia’s 5-foot-10 Casper Ware, and Payton never looked particularly comfortable running a half-court offense. Like Napier, we might see an upswing in production from Payton as the week goes on and Orlando’s offense begins to gel.

Also, Soul Bro, I thought Payton generated some nice stats as the week progressed but you left out that he had 20 turnovers to finish with and average of 7 assists per game to go along with 4 turnovers per game.

His worst turnover game(7) being when he was matched up against Marcus Smart(a great defensive player)....Although they weren't guarding each other the entire time.

    Spin Masters.......IGNITE !!!!!

What did they have to say as the week went on? What do you have to say about what 5th rebuild posted?

  8. Not trying to rub anything in your face....Trying to show Henny isn't the God-like figure most people here think he is....Sorry if that's offensive to you.

That is fine but you are conveniently omitting things along the way. I would also add that if by saying God like you mean predicting the future then yes, he is not God like. He does however make good sound decisions that are based on doing his homework vs shooting from the hip and flipping out over you tube videos and public opinion. I would take that any day.

  9. Just finished watching the game against Boston. Our teams, even when we were good always seemed to get beat by teams that out worked us. That got to the loose balls, I don't think that will be an issue with these guys. Energy guys used to eat us up, I think that is what they see with Gordon.

  10. Agree with your assesment on Gordon except the part about shooting...... don't think he'll ever get to the level the Magic want him to shooting wise.

And I want to see just a snipet of the mystery man (Exum) before I decide if Henny's choice was wise.....Think about it...Exum hasn't played against any real competition except in those All-Star games....The summer league can at least give us a small sample to judge....Looking forward to seeing it !

I don't think we will see much of anything useful in summer league just bits and pieces, it's tough to see if a guy can run a team. I remember watching Westbrook, you could tell he was a ridiculous athlete and extremely aggressive, no clue if he could run point. I'm not an MCW fan but he looked awful in summer league last year and ended up putting up numbers once the real games started.

I don't think the team needs Gordon's jumper to be Dirk level or even Frye level, just has to keep the defense honest. I can see it getting to at least that bare minimum if not better.

  11. True....After watching Gordon play summer league you don't question that pick now ???

After watching Gordon play I see a project with a good chance to succeed and I see that we didn't reach for a PG because we had a plan to get the one we wanted with a later pick. We came away with what we wanted and picked up a good project to go with him.

I mentioned it in the other thread but I don't bet against guys that fight hard and take competition personally. That much I can see from him even with the missed jumpers. The guy picks up speed extremely quick and moves laterally just as fast. I've seen worse jumpers than his that go in at a decent percentage after guys put in a lot of practice, I would be surprised if that didn't improve. The guys that truly scare me are the Michael Beasley's of the world, tons of talent, don't really care about anything. Gordon cares about winning and helping his team.

  12. No, I've been watching most of them...Only today just bits and pieces...I agree Payton has played better....All things considered that assist/turnover rate is not good...But overall he is playing better....agreed.

Can't wait to see what Exum looks like !

Lol, wanted no part of Exum, couldn't bad mouth him enough...until Rob picked someone else.

  13. What about this and I really think it would work and you and I could make boatloads of money....You would be perfect playing Steven A. Smith....You know, the guy who flips his lid anytime a controversial subject arises.

I'll play Skip who expresses himself so eloquently....but on point !.....I'm game......

Yes, there are so few that can quote articles as eloquently as you do. Speaking of flipping a lid, I seem to remember someone flipping out and dropping a bunch of obscenities...interesting, haha!

  14. How did Noah look when he came into the league? When I think of guys with a lot of drive, effort, he is the first one I think of. Gordens game doesn't look like Noah's but these guys that are team player types that kill themselves to get better seem to over come any skill limitations they may have and make up for it in other ways. It's the guys that don't give a damn that fail. Gordens form looks fine, certainly better than Noahs did, way better than Trevors did, and WAY better than Marions. I don't know what he will end up looking like but I don't bet against guys with energy and fight.

  15. Hmm, interesting.

I agree that the contract we gave him doesn't indicate we think he's building block material (obviously), but the rest of the article is right in line with my opinion.

Even if he offensive game were one dimensional (which it is not), he would still be doing more than just hitting 3's with regard to our offense. The players he is comparing Frye to are also way off considering McBob has had no where near the impact on any team he has played on and Hawes has not been as consistant. I would also add that if Millsap hit the FA market today he would be getting considerably more than 19 over 2.

For the life of me I still can't understand why writers keep harping on the Gordon signing, it's 1 yr which forces a former legit scorer to sink or swim. Either way it doesn't hurt us for any more than this year. It's low risk, high reward, I don't get the issue.

  16. The Decision has been made. LeBron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers, a league source tells SheridanHoops.com.

James met with Miami Heat president Pat Riley today in Las Vegas to deliver the news. A contingent of other Heat officials were informed they were not welcome at the meeting, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
