If the Magic are searching for a third point guard --- and Coach Stan Van Gundy says they are after losing Mike Wilks to a season-ending knee injury --- an experienced one has just become available.

Veteran Dan Dickau was waived by the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

The six-year veteran, who was playing for his eighth team, averaged 5.3 points and 2.6 assists last season. He has a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 to 1.08.

His best year was with New Orleans, playing 67 games and starting 46 of them. That year (04-05) he averaged 13.2 PPG, 5.2 APG, 2.7 RPG, 2.15 TO/G.

    In a nutshell:

Reasons for hope - D12 improving, Battie is back (we hope), Pietrus an ugrade defensively at SG

Reasons to worry - Turk's contract status, missing a mean PF, the PG situation

    quote:
    Bottom line

The Magic are runaway favorites in the Southeast Division. But against a physical team such as Boston, Detroit or even Cleveland, Orlando will continue to come up short. Another second-round exit is probably in the cards.

I agree with almost everything in the article. My main gripe - getting eliminated in the 2nd round again!

The Magic's most pressing need is a point guard to back up Jameer Nelson, and they'd prefer a pure playmaker with a defensive-mind set. Not many available, as you'd expect.

Three point guards became unrestricted free agents today when the Clippers (who signed Baron Davis) rennounced rights to Shaun Livingston --- a promising star until a devastating 2007 knee unjury --- Smush Parker and Dan Dickau.

Livingston is 6-7, but has yet to play since the horrific injury. He apparently has not come back far enough. The Clippers rejected his $5.8 million qualilfying contract.

Dickau is undersized and not a good defender, but is a true playmaker.

Parker washed out in Miami after the Heat signed him and was suspended after seven games last season.

The Magic might not be that desperate yet.

No to Smush, not big on Dickau, Livingston . . . worth the risk?

Keyon Dooling is not returning to play for the Magic --- barring an unforseen infusion of Magic money.

Unless de facto owner Bob Vander Weide shows up at his door in the form of Ed McMahon and presents him with one of those giant sweepstakes checks --- Keyon is gone after three seasons in Orlando.

Dooling confirmed that to me Wednesday during our conversation, but didn't want to be quoted.

Mostly, he would have given the club a quality backup to Jameer Nelson. Doo sort of knew the direction the Magic were going when they entertained (but lost) Chris Duhon to the Knicks. Then the Mickael Pietrus deal pretty much meant the Magic would have to adhere to budget guidelines and find cheap backups.

    Keyon Dooling will be missed.

I for one will miss Keyon's high enery and defense off of the bench. I hope he succeeds wherever he ends up. Thank you Keyon for your services!

Unless one of the few teams with money opens its vault to him, it appears Corey Maggette has only the midlevel exception available --- and that puts the Magic in the running. Things will heat up this week when teams can sign free agents on Wednesday, so....

The 5 Reasons Corey Ought To Choose Orlando To Play:

    1. It's homecoming, sort of. Maggette began his career with the Magic, acquired in 1999 and then traded the next year.

    2. Dwight Howard.

    3. The Eastern Conference, home of the Magic.

The Celtics are getting old fast, ready for blue-plate specials. The Pistons are so yesterday they are putting their whole team on E-Bay. LeBron? He's already planning his escape to New York/New Jersey. The Magic are coming on strong, having reached the semis this season.

    4. The shooting-guard spot is yours, Corey, and trust me: Stan Van Gundy has never held up the stop sign.

    5. No state tax!

    quote:
If the Magic and point guard Chris Duhon have agreed to a wink-wink free-agent deal, the club has basically delivered combo guard Keyon Dooling one of two messages:

    1. Here's what's left in the pot. Take it or leave it -- but give us a head's up, ASAP.

    2. Thanks for the memories.

The Magic had said they wanted Dooling to return --- they called him when free agency opened --- and Dooling has indicated he wants to do that. And you couldn't blame him if he wanted a raise after his fine 2007-2008 season.

But if Duhon is aboard, the situation might change.

Dooling made around $3.5 million last season, completing a three-year contract for about $11 million. But if Duhon is getting $3 million of the $6 million midlevel exception, Dooling will be looking at about $3 mill a year -- roughly the same salary as before.

Here's another question: Have the Magic improved defensively if they let Dooling --- their best perimeter defender --- get away? Duhon is a good defender, but isn't it a wash without Dooling

Baron Davis just skipped town. Gilbert Arenas isn't coming. And Don Nelson has one foot out the door.

No, it has not been a good offseason for the Warriors. In fact, one might say Golden State's immediate future just got as hazy as the fog that often shrouds the Golden Gate Bridge.

Throw in Nelson's status as a lame-duck coach likely to retire after the season, and it looks as if Golden State could be in for some rocky days.

without a proven playmaker like Davis at the point, it's hard to imagine Golden State getting back to the playoffs next season

With the contract extensions for Dwight Howard (approximately $85 million) and Jameer Nelson ($35 million) kicking in, the Magic have little financial leverage in free agency this summer. If they can't lure Maggette to Orlando this summer, they will likely split up their $5.8 million on several players. Orlando general manager Otis Smith, assistant GM Dave Twardzik and head coach Stan Van Gundy made contact with the representatives of several free-agent players minutes after midnight, namely New Jersey center DeSagana Diop and Golden State shooting guard/small forward Mickael Pietrus.

Smith said last week that the Magic "would have to take care of (its) own free agents first," and they did just that by contacting combo guard Keyon Dooling minutes after midnight. Dooling said Tuesday the Magic made a strong pitch to him -- as several other teams did as well -- but no contract offer was made. Dooling, Orlando's top reserve this past season, is of great importance to the Magic because of his ability to play both the point guard and shooting guard positions.

Maggette is drawing serious interest from San Antonio, Orlando and Boston already and could emerge as a top target of Philadelphia if the 76ers -- armed with more salary-cap space (an estimated $12.4 million) than any other team in the league besides Memphis -- are unable to sign restricted free-agent forward Josh Smith away from the Atlanta Hawks.

Yet Maggette could also wind up as a target for the Warriors, who without Davis' salary suddenly have the financial flexibility to re-sign prized youngsters Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins and make a splashy signing or two from the outside.

Throws the Warriors and Sixers into the mix for Maggette too, and with a lot more money to offer him at that.
