    NO-VIN SITUATION?

    CARTER DEAL 50-50; JASON DOUBTFUL

    By FRED KERBER

February 21, 2007 -- The Nets' possible trade of Jason Kidd has made almost as much news as Britney Spears' self-inflicted haircut. But figure Kidd stays around longer than Britney's latest look.

    Vince Carter is another matter.

While several NBA execs put a damper on the possibility of Kidd moving anywhere by tomorrow's 3 p.m. deadline - one labeled a potential deal as "highly doubtful" - other league sources claimed new talks were initiated regarding Carter, despite his ability to opt out of his contract at season's end.

One exec said there was a 50-50 chance of a trade.

It was not immediately clear what teams pursued Carter, who will make $16.36 million next year if he bypasses free agency.

Nets president Rod Thorn insisted there was "nothing, not at all" on the horizon, but added, "You never know, things can develop."

Carter yesterday spoke only about the Nets' resuming their playoff quest starting tonight in the Meadowlands against the Hornets and former Nets coach Byron Scott. Oh, yeah, games. Remember them? Well, just two more days before games dominate the situation again.

Monday, Carter said he was tired of the trade/free agency questions.

"Just to have that be over with and we can move on, either way," he said. "Hopefully, we all do. I'm just tired of hearing about it."

But often, NBA stuff happens when you least expect it.

"A lot of times when there's the most talk nothing happens," said Richard Jefferson who was continuing his rehab at the practice facility. "And then when there's little talk - no one knew we were going to get Vince Carter. No one knew we were going to get J-Kidd. Sometimes when there's a lot of talk very little happens."

Most of the talk has been about Kidd, whose departure would recall the Nets nightmare days. The franchise had one playoff series victory and never had won 50 games in a season. Players were overpaid because of their public-relations savvy or skill in one area, however limited.

The franchise was better known for mistakes and foibles, for whom they didn't draft - Reggie Miller, Kobe Bryant - more than for whom they did - Dennis Hopson, Chris Morris. Then Kidd arrived and everything changed.

"The guy is the heart and soul of the franchise," said coach Lawrence Frank. "People who were here pre-Jason and then during know the difference. This guy, he turned the franchise around.

"What separates him from 99 percent of the players in the NBA is he has a will like no other," Frank added. "When your captain comes to play every single night, it puts pressure on everyone in that locker room to do the same. You can't put a statistic on that. You can't put a value on it, other than when you have Jason Kidd you feel you have a chance to win."

Man this anticipation is killing me.

What is this crap? Where do they get this from?

I really don't see the Clippers as a major player. They are giving up most of their backcourt of a 3 month rental...hopefully 3 month rental. They held on to Livingston as if he GOD during the Iverson talks; why deal him now for a player who may not return after this season? Crazy.

NOW, if this crap is true that BRIAN FVCKING HILL doesn't want Vince on the team, Otis should hand him his walking papers. A coach is not supposed to keep the team from improving. I can't believe this Napolean Dynomite is this blind to see that our team needs a CONSISTENT scorer and arrogant enought to not want him on the team when/if he is available. If we do not land Vince because of Brian FVCKING HILL, I too will not watch anymore Magic games. I cannot support a team that doesn't want to improve. I love our group of players and believe in them but what's the point if the coach is going to commit the same errors to cause our team to lose games. We have a chance to add top-notch talent to our growning neucleus and become serious contenders in the east and are willing to throw all of this away for the ego of our coach...no sir. If I was old and didn't have anything going for myself in life, I would take one for our team and try to take out Brian fvcking Hill myself.

  3. ^^^^^ ahhhh, you beat me by 10 minutes. lol

this is a VERY interesting "Devil's Advocate" perspective. It does make total sense. What if we do trade for Vince by the deadline and Jordan (his new statements makes this a strong possibility) throws "ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD" at a top-tier talent in Vince if he opts out of his schedule? Vince can verywell leave and we'll be stuck without our current assets. This should calm down everyone expectations; it has mine. I will hope for the best.

JJ is a good player and will be a very good player but some of you Magic fans have him a little to high on your talent board.

The thing is, most of us aren't trying to win "NOW". I don't think Otis is trying either. Vince still has some good year in him and we are planning for the next 1-4 yrs. This season's goal was to just make the playoffs. Hopefully we can get deeper than that with a weak EAST. And since Grant is a FA after the season, he can easily come back to the team. If we deal JJ, he a goner and will become a "Magic Killer" along with all the others we've lost. Trading Grant (and resigning him later) gives us a better chance of keeping our young talent. If we trade JJ, we lose a piece of that young talent forever.

Lying in the weeds, things are too quiet... that is in Vegas from Orlando...

Why are things so quiet out of Orlando. I confirmed with my long time friend who works with the Warriors, the Nets have had talks with the Magic (among other teams) about Vince. From the Wariors perspective, they would not touch Vince because they feel it would just become a bad rental of a player. Sure Vince has all world talents, but for a team to take a chance on Vince and not be able to resign him would destroy any chemistry on the team because all the players in the NBA already know what Vince wants to do. I was given a strong reason why almost all GM's, including Rod Thorn see the writing on the wall. There is not many players in the league that are as family oriented as Vince Carter. I was given the example of Carter going back to UNC for his graduation, despite the Raptors being on the verge of making it to the NBA finals. This is more of a window in to Vince Carter as a person rather than Vince Carter as a player. He puts his family priorities sometimes over that of his team or money. Right or wrong this is how Vince is made up as a person and you can not ask him to change. It is also what makes him great as a player because he plays on that raw emotion and can harness it to take over a game. Apparrently, the news the GM's were getting back from their own players is that Carter is completely focused on playing with Dwight Howard. They were seen countless times during the All-Star festivities together, and were described to me as both having "wide smiles and laughing at their own jokes like a newly wed couple." In otherwords, they stood out from the crown and people noticed. I have to put my own spin on this because as I watch the player introductions I saw some of this as well when Carter turned to Dwight as his name was announce giving him a big grin and then Carter himself started to do Dwight's snap dance to encourage some emotion from Dwight as well (could you see that on TV too?). The belief from the Warriors perspective is Rod Thorn should not have waited to make a trade this late. He should have attempted to trade Carter in the offseason when there was not this much attention to Carter and his desire to return to Florida. This is a misstake that may come back to haunt the Nets.

The Warriors were approached by the Nets to gauge interest in Kidd and also told Carter could be had cheaper. Without going in to my private discussions any further, I was told that there is not one team inthe league the Warriors feel will give up anything for Vince and that INCLUDES THE MAGIC. As the question was put to me, "Why should the Magic give anything up?" The only real reason to get Vince now versus the offseason is it clears up a lot of questions for the offseason and then the Magic can start to narrowly focus on what they want to accomplish in the offseason. You may think that the Magic want to aquire young talent if they can go ahead and pull off the Carter trade, but another league associate of mine's opinion was why would they want to add anymore young talent. In his opinion the Magic have more young talent than playing time will allow. I have to agree with him on this because if you bring in Carter, where will the minutes come from for Trevor and JJ. Assuming Grant Hill is resigned in the offseaon, Hedo would have to be traded or JJ & Trevor would be fighting over court time. Something Otis would dread because he feels those 2 players will greatly add dimensions to the Magic's game that few players around the league can. No need to restate the obvious, because we all know what these 2 players can do.

As I pined for more information out of my other league sources, I was finding the same resounding opinion out of them all. Also, one of them laughed at the news the Clippers were willing to part with Livingston in any trade for a player they would just be renting unless Marcus Williams was included in the deal as well. It came down to the same thing over and over again, Vince will not make a commitment to signing an extension or not opting out of his contract. There is just too much information out there in the press, from the players, from Vince and even from Rod Thorn's own quotes that Vince wants to be in Orlando. So much so that any GM willing to take Vince in a trade could be signing his own letter of resignation at the same time. It would be an act of professional suicide outside of winning it all this year. Now that the All-Star festivities are over, Thorn has to have come away from Vegas knowing he is in a position of dealing with one team, the Magic, and he will not get much either. It has to come down to Thorn's assessment of what he will risk by not trading Vince now.

By not trading Vince now, the Nets could make the playoffs as an 8th seed. Sound good? Not if you are going to rebuild. On the surface the decisions should be easy for the Nets. There 3rd and 4th best players are out and probably for the season in Jefferson and Nenad. They have a player they need to see what they have in Wright. This is the deepest draft for probably the last 10 years. They need to tank the rest of the year and lets Lawrence Frank develop the talent he has. Getting a pick outside the lotto could mean the difference in getting an impact player that you can use to intice Bosh, Wade or Bron in 3 years. Why then would Thorn wait to trade Vince or Kidd for that matter? Stubborness, fan backlash? Who knows other than Thorn. He is at the mercy of the GM's of the league because no team wants to make the Nets that healthy when they also see the writing on the wall that Lebron has a very good chance of signing with his FRIEND JAY-Z and the Brooklyn Nets in 3 years. The Brooklyn Nets will be the Sheik team of the league when they take over the New York Market. The league knows it and so do all the GM's. Don't think it was a coincedence that Bosh, Bron and Wade all signed the same deal last offseason. Jay-Z knows how to pick his friends and all the NBA players idolize Jay-Z and his arm candy Beyonce. Don't get fooled by anything else. Jay-z lives the life all of them want to be associated with.

Let's return to what I assume is going on amongst discussions with the Magic internally. I am sure there is the arguement between why make a trade now versus waiting to do it in the offseason. It is believed that Vince will sign a reasonable deal regardless if he is traded to the Magic or out right signs with them. It also must come down to what assets the Magic feel they can trade now and be comfortable with. No GM wants to make the other GM look bad because of repercussions in the future. All GM's barter hard and some do not play nice behind closed doors, but no GM wants to outright make a trade that makes another team looked completely fleeced. The problem is the Magic are not willing to part with any young players. I was told by other league sources the Nets got zero progress in with their desire to get the Magic to include any coveted young players. I would think it would be safe to assume those players would include Jameer, Trevor, Darko, Dwight (I know I did not really need to put his name down) & JJ. Also the Magic do not want Jason Collins either. He is not viewed as a big man that can help the Magic & is tremendously overpaid. Apparrently the Nets want Collins gone in a deal either with Kidd or Carter and that seems to be more of a sticking point than getng a team to include coveted young players.

What makes sense to me is the Nets take a package of players that would include Travis Diener and then ship Travis to the Suns for a 2007 draft pick and the Magic bite the bullet and take Collins. If I were the Nets I would do a deal if the Magic would take Collins and then give me a protected first orFran's rights along, Travis, Grant and Hedo. I have no sense or feel to what the Magic want to do other than hearing bits and pieces from my own sources around the league. But what I can do is give one piece of advice to Otis Smith that was said to me by a well respected scout who is also a friend of mine. I will try to paraphrase, "If the Magic want to develop Ariza in to that explosive go to guy that will take over a game, what better person to learn from than Vince Carter. Carter has never had a player around him since TMAC that has the untapped talent like Ariza. Young players need a Veteran they can relate to and share experiences with. Vince and Trevor would be a perfect match. Not many players can fly that high and experieces what those two can" After getting his opinion, I have to agree 100%. Never thought about that until I had that conversation. Just like we all see how Darko and Dwight will help each other grow. I can not imagine a better prototype of a veteran than Vince Carter to help Trevor grow. Because of Trevor's willingness to learn and be coached then add Grant Hill to this mix to tutor young Trevor and you could be looking at a player in Trevor that could eclipse both of their accomplishments in the league. For the sake of Trevor's future, I am hoping Otis finds a way to make a deal work now or in the offseason.

WOW!!! This is the BEST news i've heard all weekend. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO CRUNK RIGHT NOW. Thorn needs to stop being a beotch and give into this trade. Glad to hear Vince and Dwight were the "newly weds" at the all-star events. You could see it on TV also (on the team bus siting by each other, on the bench sitting side by side). This is a GREAT moment to be a Magic fan. And that last bit he said about Treveor possibly surpassing the accomplishments of both VINCE AND GRANT with the right mentoring gave me chills. I was also happy to hear the word around the league is everyone knows Vince is going to Orlando and other GMs don'w want to waste their time with him. I was GLAD to hear Otis is not willing to part with ANY of our young talent...Trevor, Darko, or JJ. If "FutureGM" is right, we should be hearing something by end of tomrrow with Otis' Tuesday deadline. I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight.

    What Will He Do?

Feb 19 - The Nets seem on the verge of a breakup with Vince Carter eligible to be a free agent after this season. The Magic has been hiding in the weeds as a potential destination for Carter with Grant Hill's expiring big contract and several expendable young players such as Darko Milicic, J.J. Redick and perhaps Hedo Turkoglu.

"I've heard the talk," said Tracy McGrady, Carter's cousin who used to play for the Magic. "I don't know what he really wants to do. But he's built a house down there, he grew up 25-30 miles away from there."

Teaming Carter with Dwight Howard "would make them a great contender in the East for years to come," McGrady said. -- Chicago Tribune

"You can't always get what you want. Let's say there were discussions, but there's nothing definitive at this time," Rod Thorn said, clearly referring to Carter's agent Kurt Schoeppler.

"It doesn't affect what we do, not necessarily -- from my perspective," Thorn added. "I have to look at what my options are, whether they're good or not so good. And then we try to ascertain what options he has -- who's under the cap, who might have a need. But that doesn't mean we're going to trade Vince. We're only going to trade someone if it benefits us.

I agree Dave, I would much rather see JJ stay BUT if that was to make or break the deal we would have to say bye to Mr Redick!

VC has impressed me so much with his attitude towards Orlando and I think he would be a great fit here!

    1. I love that trade from the RealGM site. That would be a dream come true. Let's email it to Otis and Thorn, lol.

    2. I don't agree with you guys. JJ has shown he belongs on this team. I don't want to see him go at all. If it came down to choosing him or VC and this was make-or-break decision, I would say "NO; we'll get Carter for free in a few months" and hope Thorn gives in. I hope Otis is uses his strong PIMP hand and we get who we want for what we want.

I think he's talking about from another team's point of view no named the Magic. Why invest assets in Vince for him to play with you for 3 months then leave for Orlando? The rest of the league knows he wants to play in O-town with Dwight & Co. Taking a chance on him will mess with chemistry now cause he will not be there later.

  10. My bad Marc, didn't know it was in here since it was its own article.

Now, I also would do that deal in a heartbeat...ANYTHING to get Pat outta here. Though beggers can't be choosers, I'd rather have Pollard; he's a stud (no homo). I've been a fan of his since he played in Sac-Town. But, I do like the fact that Davis' contract expires at the end of this season. Could this be the small trade that MC just mentioned in his latest post?

    hmmmmmmm...

  11. the guy who broke the trade idea is now saying this on the realgm forum:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know you are were all expecting this trade to be on ESPN today but their was a problem with it that came up,im sorry I didnt post it here earlier, keeping yall on the edge of the seats.

The trade hit a snag because of Pat Garrity and his trade kicker and contract, apparently the majority Bobcats owner, right before it was sent to the league office killed the deal because he didnt want to pay the contract.

The good news is Orlando agreed to take on Othella Harrington's deal.So expect an announcement no later than Friday.

And yes Derek Anderson is going to be waived when this happen's

I also know Michael Jordan was personally involved in this deal at the end stages

I know has been saying nothing major is going to happen but what if this trade really does go down? ESPECIALLY with the showing Darko put in last night? IMO swingmen are always easier to find than skilled 7-footers. I really don't want this trade to go down if it means us giving up Darko and JJ. I rather see what we have this year and try to get someone via FA in the summer...just as planned.

  12. Hey guys, Chris Sheridan thinks we can aquire Pau Gasol via trade. Here's his trade idea...what do you think?

    quote:
    ORLANDO MAGIC

The Magic might lose Darko Milicic as a free agent next summer. For that reason, it would make sense for Orlando to explore the idea of Milicic, Travis Diener (a shooter to replace Mike Miller after he's traded, too) and Carlos Arroyo (a new point guard, which West craves) for Gasol.

The Magic could not give Memphis an '07 first-round pick, however, since they traded it to Detroit in the Darko deal. But Orlando is looking to move the rights to '05 first-round pick Fran Vazquez.

Trade Machine: Gasol for Milicic, Diener and Arroyo

    Probability factor: 2

Here's the link to his article...sorry, but instead of posting it in Magic Links, I felt this was more relavent to this thread.

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?co...is&page=gasol-trades

He says West is crazy about Carlos. Maybe we can work something out...Arroyo, Darko, and Franny for Gasol?

My bad nbr, I didn't read your post but i went back and read it. Thanks for the clip on Pavlovic; I like him a lot. We can put him at the 3, behind Ariza...then MAYBE, trade Turk in a package to obtain Ray Ray. I love Turk, but if we can easily replace him...then I'd entertain the thought of trading him in a package to get a better 2 guard. Pollard is a stud that does all the little things...I watched him a lot when he was in Sacramento (along side Turk).

  14. I'm sick of everyone over-valueing our players. NO ONE is going to take garbage Garrity for anything.

Another thing, I think there's no way we get Varejao from Cleveland for Arroyo & fillers. He's like a yound Bo Outlaw to them. If we do trade any players to Cleveland, I think it'll be Arroyo, Dooling or Bogans, and a 2nd rounder or Franny for Cleveland's Pavlovic & Pollard. That will give us some room for JJ to play and some decent size up front. I honestly don't think we should trade for a big when we have "Augie" doing well. He just needs a lil' playing time and he'll be very serviceable IMO.

And, I haven't seen Miller play in while but how is his D? If we could get one of the two, would you target Miller via trade or Mo Pete via FA nex summer?

  16. man, when I first heard about this phone and the price, I thought "H*ELL NO!!!!!!" 17. I am currently a IT Consultant in Kansas City, Mo. I work for this company that designs computer systems for hospitals and clinics. Pretty nice job but I'm looking to get back to the Southeast; Florida preferably. Since I live way up here and travel a lot, league pass has become my best friend.

I grew up in Kissimmee, Fl, so that's why I love the Magic. I played football (safety) & basketball (PT guard) in high school (c/o 2001), but not in college...FLORIDA STATE UNIVERISITY (c/o 2005, august). I still play pick-up games when I'm not traveling for work. My bball game is molded after Jason Kidd/Darrell Armstrong.

  18. I know this wouldn't ever happen and I didn't want to waste my time with a response, but you all are crazy if you wouldn't do it. You're talking about a GREATEST 50 PLAYER for DARKO & Hill's expiring contract!!! Stop being HOMERS and wake up. Yes, KG is getting older but he still has a good 4 yrs left in him and that would give us some REAL twin towers. DARKO has yet to prove anything to us and HILL can easily become a FA after the season and resign with us for the vet min. And since KG is on the team, that would only help D12 cause he'll have a real teacher to learn from. DARKO is trying to become what KG already is. I would do this in a heart beat.....OK, time to wake up now. That was a nyce dream.
