"I'm still behind him, but that doesn't mean we can't do better," Smith said. "At the end of the year, we'll all be evaluated and the decisions made will all be in the best interest of the Orlando Magic."

    Bye-bye Brian Hill.

What gets me is, why the hell does all this frustration/anger/humiliation begin to surface NOW, when it's possibly too late? This all should've been the concern and focus a month ago. To me, this is all talk and I'll believe it when I see it. Magic are now 1 game behind NJ, Indiana, and NY for the last two playoff spots with 17 games remaining. If they're serious about this debacle (probably not) then they've got to show some life for the next 4 weeks (ha!)

  2. I say promote Diener for the last umpteen games to show what we have in him. He will not disappoint.

As far as FAs, I'd say go after Steve Blake. We have a lot of scorers on this team and not enough to pass it to them. Blake and Diener are perfect. And, when/if we get Vince this offseason, we'll need someone UNSELFISH and who can knock down the open 3.

Put my voted down for Travis Diener and Steven Blake

  3. Check it out, my question got anwered in the ESPN chat with John Hollinger icon_wink.gif

    quote:
Jerry (Kansas City): John, what do you think about Otis Smith's comments about the Magic keeping Brian Hill for the remainder of his contract? It's pretty clear that the players are unmotivated by his coaching style and style of play. And, what available coaches would be ideal for the group of players down there in Orlando? Thanks

John Hollinger: (2:57 PM ET ) The Magic, in general, just seem way too comfortable to me. They stood pat at the trade deadline even though their season was falling apart and they had the pieces to get something done, and now they're acting like everything's fine while Rome burns around them. Maybe this last episode is just a smokescreen to get the players to listen to Hill for one more month, but I'm starting to wonder what's going on down there.

  4. I want the team to win and make the playoffs. That experience is like no other and the team needs it if they plan to win championships. I also don't want Detroit to get a good pick from us. If we had our lottery pick this draft, then I might be leaning "to the left, to the left" for the team tanking the season to get a good pick AND, hopefully, getting rid of Napolean.

Correction: SECOND true point guard of the bunch. Mustn't forget Mr. Diener.

  6. Ok. Here's my take on our off-season plans. I posted this in the free agency thread. Before the market opens up, we need to clean house. First and foremost, get a new coach. Next, I know this is all easier said than done, but we need to find a way to get rid of the following players:

    Carlos Arroyo (trade him)

Keyon Dooling (make him opt out)

    Hedo Turkoglu (trade him)

Pat Garrity (make him opt out or trade him)

    Bo Outlaw (will likely retire)

Once these players are gone, I think we should target the following Free Agents to better our team:

Darko Milicic (PF/C)- We all see what he can do. He is slowly getting comfortable with his game and will be amongst the best big man currently in the game. Good shot blocker and overall defender.

Vince Carter (SG/SF) - Great scorer who can take over for this team when we go through our offensive lapses. IMO, wonderful team player who can get others involved by drawing double teams and help spread the floor for our big men.

Travis Diener (PG) OR Steven Blake (PG) - These guys are true pass-first point gaurds. They care about getting WINNING AND ASSISTS and nothing more. They can also knock down the 3 when teams double Vince or Dwight.

Mickael Pietrus (SG/SF) or Matt Barnes (SG/SF) - These guys are good small fowards who can slash, hit the 3 AND play D. They like to make plays on BOTH sides of the court and play well WITHOUT the ball. We'll also need someone to replace the loss of Turkey.

Austin Croshere (PF) - Another big man but he can hit the 3. He's a good defender and plays well without the ball. Also does the little things that help teams win (charges, offensive boards, etc.)

Darrell Armstrong (PG) - No explanation is neccessary. Great lockerroom guy and can still ball. Perfect for 3rd point gaurd position and will also be a coach-in-training; via Avery Johnson.

MAYBE Grant Hill (SF) - I would re-sign Grant only if he's fine with coming off the bench and possibly take a role like Darrell; 3rd option in the position. We all know what he can do, but we're trying to move foward and get PT to our young guys.

It is important to get rid of the mentioned players to have enough cap space to aquire these FAs. All the FAs mentioned are not out of the question; we have a good shot at landing them without any hassle. Most are UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS except Darko, Diener, and Pietrus. If all goes well, our new '07 - '08 team will look like this:

    PG - Jameer/Diener or Blake/Armstrong

    SG - Vince/JJ/Bogans

    SF - Ariza/Pietrus or Barnes/Grant

    PF - Darko/Croshere/Gortat

    C - Dwight/Battie/Augustine

This new team would be built for defense, spreading the floor with good 3pt shooters, consistant scoring, and A CHAMPIONSHIP. We'll have a good balance of young players and veteran leadership. I like the team we have now, but we have too many "me" guys on there. The players on THIS team are all unselfish and play on both ends of the floor.

    What do you guys think?

  7. Knicks just beat Washington on a buzzer-beater 3 from yours truly, Steve Francis. This puts NY tied with us, thus taking the 8th seed due to them holding the tie-breaker vs. Orlando. Watching them the last few games, I've come to the conclusion that they are a good team. They will be a force to deal with in the playoffs and the seasons to come. Magic need to win tomorrow to take back the 8th spot.

Here's an updated on the NJ/SA game. Kidd just got ejected with 2 technicals and the Nets are now down by 12 with Vince also having a bad game. Seems like another loss for them.

  8. Indiana just lost. This puts us 1 game behind them in the standings. This is the 8th loss in a row for the Pacers. However, Philly is now becoming a sleeper team. They've now won 7 games in a row beating Phoenix, NJ, Seattle, & the Lakers. They are now 4 games behind us; seeded at 11. We better start keeping track the 76'ers.

  9. If that young guy with that same talent is easily avialable for our picking, sign me up. I say Vince is our man, not only for his proven talent, but also because he is the most realistic option out there for us. He'll be a UNRESTRICTED FA this summer, so we can sign him for whatever and won't have to possibly mortage the farm to get him. From the reports and "inside" out there, it seems as if he WANTS to play here and I think he would take a paycut to make it happen, IMO. With those same reports, they have him being all chimmy with with Jameer and Dwight before Nets/Magic games so I assume he knows this is Dwight's team and he'll take a back seet. Vince is old enough to understand all the personal awards don't mean crap w/o a championship and he knows he can win one here with a dominant big man; something he's never had before.

Now, if we can find all of that in a younger, easily obtained option, excellent. But, I don't see that happening. I personally would be all for bringing in Jason Richardson but he's only available through trade and we know GS would ask for Darko in return. I like Lewis, but as stated before, he's gonna be asking for MAX deals. Ray Allen WAS a choice, but not with this new ankle injury he's going through. These are the only 4 swingmen that would fit well with our team (good size, 3pt shooting, good passers). If you know of any others, please let me know.

Also, Webber doesn't have a problem playing second fiddle to another super-star; Detroit. The only reason Philly didn't work out is because the coach wasn't using him right. In fact, the coach wasn't using him AT ALL, so he wanted a buy out to go somewhere who would appreciated and use his talents.

  10. I agree. I would prefer Varejao over Croshere but I think he'd be too expensive for us to sign him. Varejao is a Restriced FA and Croshere will be an Unrestricted FA; therefore, he will be a lot cheaper IMO. Also, don't forget we'll have Gortat next year who's game resembles Varejao's.

As far as Vince, I know the city of Toronto has a bad rep with Vince but he's a 25/7/5 type player AND he commands double teams. That is EXACTLY what we need. I also think he'd be cheaper than Rashard Lewis because he wants to play here. I would rather have Lewis, but I also think he'll be too expensive for our blood. And I wasn't saying Vince is the BEST team player out there but he can easily get 6-10 assists per game; more than any of our currently PLAYING point gaurds. He can always find his shot but he's also willing to pass the open man. I've watched more than half the Nets games this season and since he's one of the only scoring options, he's obligated to take as many shots as he does. Put him on a team as I described earlier and I think he'll be a different player. But that's just me.

The 100-76 loss to the Bulls on Thursday was not a big morale booster. Looks more and more like it will be a four-way scrum among the Pacers, Magic, Nets and Knicks for the final two spots in the East.

The Magic went 3-9 over February. Don't blame Dwight Howard for the skid -- his numbers for the month were his best of the season, making 70.7 percent of his shots, averaging 22.8 points and 12.5 rebounds. Darko Milicic was better too, going 11.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg while shooting 50.4 percent from the field.

But it probably doesn't help that Grant Hill has missed 10 of his last 17 games before Thursday. And Jameer Nelson did not shoot over 50 percent from the field in any of the nine February losses. Howard's got an NBA worst 236 turnovers (3.8 per game). That's a lot of turnovers, but even D-Ho won't approach the season mark of 366 set by Artis Gilmore in 1978.

At least they've got two games with Boston and one with Memphis left to go.

Predicted finish: 36-46. Ninth, "out" of playoffs in East.

I don't care what ESPN has to say about us. All they do is look at win/losses and stats to determine their "expert predictions". Us TRUE fans know the pulse of our team and it ain't over TILL WE SAY IT'S OVER! And dammit, it ain't over. Yes, one terrible loss, but we have 19 more games to pull this out. Don't forget we're still in the 8th see. F*CK ESPN and their "experts"! We're making the playoffs and winning our series.

  13. Sorry for the late updated. After last night's debacle, I didn't want to see the message board. As you know we lost so here's the current standings:

    6. Miami 6.5

    7. Indiana 8.5

    8. Orlando 10.0

    9. New Jersey 10.0

    10. New York 10.5

    Games to watch tonight:

    Minnesota @ Maimi

    New Jersey @ Houston

Of course we're not catching Miami but if NJ wins tonight, they are the new 8th seed. Let's Go Rockets!
