I think Jabari will be like Jaren Jackson jr with the balance tilted more towards offense. Warming up to the idea of drafting him.

What I really want is for us to steal Tyler Herro in free agency, next season

    Good comparison. "Tilted towards offense"

After watching Jimmy Butler take perhaps the most ill-advised shot I can remember in recent memory, I'm terrified that Smith being the 3 point shooter he is makes the same choice. Not saying he wouldn't make the shot just what is his selection at that moment?

    1. Jabari wouldn't be bringing up the ball in that situation.

    2. It was a good shot for him. He walked right into the 3; just missed it. They struggled against a set Celtic defense so in-transition is how they had to score.

    3. Definitely a good question to ask on an interview.

I think Smith's shot is elite... I mean really elite. Sure I was pumping AJ Griffin because of his 3PT% earlier this year, but then I watched all the upper tier NCAA teams play quite a bit. Smith's shot is just so pure... and so much more athletic in his timing and release than anyone else in this draft. (I'm not counting Sharpe here for the moment because we've not seen him play in any competition in a year). Going back to Smith, his shot is one of the best outside shots in years. His perimeter defense is also just so nasty. Now here's my question: Can Smith become THE two-way alpha a team needs? I'm not sure. Honestly, all these guys have question marks for me. But I'm not betting against Smith.

I don't think the team NEEDs a 2-way alpha. Would be nice to have, but I'm confident in the core (Kelle/Franz/WCj/Suggs?/Isaac?) we have and think Jabari fits with any of them. He's a 2-way player, and plays with fire. Him gaining that alpha mentality will come with time and further development of his game; if it ever comes.

Man this interview screams no Orlando to me …if I was in his shoes and that lady asked me if I wanted to go to Orlando and if I wanted to be the top pick I would have said “Hell ya” so fast she’d of had to step back lol …my friends say the same thing .

I don’t think Holmgren will be drafted by us anyway with or without this video

So, I was thinking about this video again this morning, and remembered what Givony wrote last week about Chet and Jabari:

    Quote

While Magic executives have made it clear they will conduct a thorough process -- even extending beyond the widely believed top three prospects in Smith, Holmgren and Paolo Banchero -- most NBA teams firmly believe that's a formality and that Smith is all but assured to become the top pick. Smith, for his part, appears thrilled with that development. So is Holmgren over his looming marriage with the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is also the overwhelming expectation from NBA executives with whom we spoke at the draft combine. -- Givony

In that TMZ video, to me, if rumors are true, definitely looks and sounds like Givony's Intel is accurate; everyone knows Jabari going 1, even Chet knows. When he is asked, he can't bring himself to lie and lobby to be #1 pick when he already knows it's not happening.

    Junkie, I agree with you.

She asked him specifically about Orlando and did he wanna be the first pick…I would have at least said something positive like “yeah Orlando has a nice nucleus can’t wait to get down there and work out” .

Chet is considered a candidate for the top pick …never heard a guy who is considered a candidate not say “I wanna be the top guy” …I mean sheesh …who wouldn’t wanna be the top pick in the league lol …seemed to me he was worried about the fit in Orlando and quite frankly so am I …Everybody saying Issac is not dependable …like he isn’t even a part of the team anymore …while Jonathan saying he’s ready to go …others saying he could have played but the tank was on …I don’t see any world where Holmgren and Issac would be happy platooning …and I didn’t watch the team much but most people here say WCJ has the 5 on lockdown …Isaac was a DPOY candidate his last season …don’t him and Chet kinda do the same things ?

Anyway, I think it’s all a mute point …Givony saying NBA execs telling him Orlando wants Smith …also way to much negativity about Chet from the fan base imo and that is relevant …Chet has a lot of support but there are also a lot of naysayers …just like on this message board

    Agreed. I'm a Jabari/Chet/Shaedon guy.

Going to be a wild 4 weeks.

Jerry …what did Sharpe say when Shams Charania asked him where he wanted to go in the draft ….I rest my case lol

Ask the best prospects and they have 2 answers...I'm the best player and should be #1 or I want the best fit. All training PR replies.

Listened to a podcast from 740 the team this morning. Mike Tuck pointed out a fact i think we all know but forgot. The last number 1 pick to lead the team that drafted him to a chip was Tim Duncan. He was drafted in1997! Now LeBron counts but his case is special. He left the Cavs and came back. Clearly he was good enough to win a title and i still marvel how bad the Cavs organization is to have only one chip with LeBron.

i think about this stat every year and why i was hoping for #2 or #3 pick. At this point, that drought has to be broken at some point; why not us?

Jabari Smith (Top 100: No. 2) and Chet Holmgren (Mock draft: No. 1)

Tuesday's lottery removed one of the big questions from the 2022 NBA draft -- who is picking first? -- and cleared a path for Smith to make a short trip from Atlanta to join what's becoming one of the most interesting young rosters in the NBA in the Orlando Magic. While Magic executives have made it clear they will conduct a thorough process -- even extending beyond the widely believed top three prospects in Smith, Holmgren and Paolo Banchero -- most NBA teams firmly believe that's a formality and that Smith is all but assured to become the top pick. 10. I watched this last night and enjoyed the talk. I learned a few things. Skip to 15:15 for Magic specific talk (short).

If you don't feel like watching, the former OKC scout says:

    - all signs pointing to Jabari going #1

    - Paolo is a darkhorse for #1 pick. we really like him.

    - best skills = Paolo; analytics darling = Chet; best developmental project = Jabari

    - Ivey has Kobe-like mentality and Det has been gunning for him.

    - if OKC trades back, it'll be for Ivey

  11. well well well.....LFG!

    1. Jabari is the best fit. Can't rely on JI's availability and health, so Jabari steps right into the starting PF slot. He's the ultimate 3&D option for us, and would feed off of our guards & Franz. One can question if it's wise to spend the #1 pick on a role player. If you've seen enough to comfortably build around Markelle/Franz/Wendell, Jabari makes perfect sense. Kelle/Suggs (*if shooting is improved)/Franz/Jabari/WCj....that is a perfect balance of everything; such a well-rounded lineup.

    2. I love everything about Chet except his body. I worry about it. However, if the medicals check out and the FO greenlight's his selection, I'd be happy. Elite IQ, shot-blocking, shooter, awareness, and a straight hooper. He's also a super great fit. I've seen it said a few times the last couple weeks, but this past season with WCj/Bamba starting together was a trial run for how we'd potentially look with 2 bigs and Chet replacing Bamba. The feel for the game, defense, and shooting from a Franz/WCj/Chet front line can be something super special.

    3. Shaedon Sharpe....man, I'd still consider this kid. In a league where guards/wings rule, he can be the one to elevate our potential future. I trust the FO and Matt Lloyd strongly consider him and would be just as happy as the other 2 options, if he's our pick.

We're in a good position and looking forward to draft season over the next 5 weeks.

Whatever the Celtics end up doing over the next several hours, regardless of whether Aaron Gordon has regrets about his trade request, there is one thing for certain: Gordon remains eager to be traded to Boston, sources tell The Athletic. Gordon also would welcome a deal to Denver or Portland, according to sources, so Boston faces real competition to get a deal done by the NBA trade deadline at 3 p.m. ET Thursday.

    Quote

As the Minnesota Timberwolves drift out of the race, according to league sources, the path toward completing a deal seems to be materializing for Boston. Denver remains neck and neck with the Celtics and Gordon would be happy to end up in Dallas alongside Luka Doncic, but all indications from sources across the league are that this will run to Thursday’s buzzer. The Nuggets can build a package around Gary Harris, rookie RJ Hampton and a first-round pick, which is a substantial enough package to make Boston’s desired package of rookie Aaron Nesmith, a first-round pick and a $17 million traded player exception (TPE) the Magic would create sending Gordon into Boston’s Hayward TPE seem untenable. Boston doesn’t seem to have other options, so they may be willing to outbid Denver.
