  1. and ultimately, all we're saying is you need an elite player to have a contending team. current rules limiting player movement and trends of players going to elite teams means the odds of getting that player through free agency is slim.

if you cant get a free agent great player you need to go into trades or the draft.

trades require outbidding teams that might have bigger assets than you which is outside of your control.

so the only situation where you control your own outlook is the draft. its still a gamble. but the odds of obtaining a good player are significantly greater than the other options.

It really is mind boggling that there are fans who don't understand this.

Almost all of the success this franchise has enjoyed has been directly due to hitting it big in the lotto. We'd all love to live in a world where we can root for wins every night, even in losing seasons, but it simply isn't in the best interest of our long term success to win meaningless games when our best chance of contending is through drafting well.

Higher draft picks lead to a better chance of drafting good players. Having good players leads to more trade opportunities due to having more assets. Having good players also (ideally) leads to success on the court. Success on the court leads to a better chance of landing big FAs.

The mindset of completely disregarding the importance of drafting as high as possible makes absolutely no sense. I just think some people like to be contrarian.

  2. To use your lottery ticket analogy...

I have a winning lottery ticket for $10. I offer it to you. You decline it because you'd rather hit the $1 million.

That's what all this hope of losing is.

I've already pointed out that of the last 20 championships, only about 4 of those championships were built via a "tank for high picks" dynamic. And 2 of those championships were the Jordan / Pippen Bulls.

The other 16 were built via drafting at whatever position they had, not purposefully losing for higher picks, and then doing this magical thing called building talent around them.

Funny how history shows that losing doesn't lead to winning.

    "This guy"

It's just semantics to call losing last nights game tanking or just being an outright loss. The fact is that winning that meaningless game in a lost season gave us a worse chance to pick the highest prospects on our board. You cannot deny that. You might not care about it but you can't deny it.

That being said, to act like that meaningless win and avoiding "tanking" in that one instance has significance in the overall context of building a winning team, but TANGIBLY INCREASING OUR CHANCES TO HAVE A HIGHER PICK IN THE DRAFT doesn't matter at all is not only contradictory, but it's some of the worst reasoning I've seen on here.

For that reason, you are "that guy".

  3. I'm not "salty" about an analytical approach.

I'm against the absolute absurdity of hoping for your team to lose for a less than not guaranteed possibility of something that may or may not happen.

    This guy.

If I offered to buy you 50 lotto tickets for the next PowerBall, I'm guessing you'd opt for just one ticket instead on the principle of saving some paper.

  4. Far to many excuses get made on this board regarding AG & Mario.

We're now going to blame Vogel's system for the reason AG can't hit an open 3?

That just seems like an incredible reach. Can't we just say he's a terrible 3pt shooter but his form doesn't look that bad so he should be able to improve?

I don't think anyone said that.

  5. yeah I'm not sure we need to focus on power forward for three point shooting upgrades. I think you need to look at Vogel's offense and the effect it's had on typically reliable three point shooters.

I figured a lot of that had to do with our clunky lineup in the first half of the season but shooting 28.8% post all star is not encouraging. I'm just going to chalk it up to trying to reinvent the offense midseason which is really difficult with limited practice time. We run too much single action offense where you have 3 guys moving and two guys standing still. We aren't currently putting guys in a position to succeed (ross, Biyombo). We look good when we push the pace because when we push the pace we're not running plays.

    This.

  6. Y'all see my boy D-Rob yesterday? I brought him up a few weeks ago asking what everyone thought about taking him with the late 1st. Idk if I'd take him there, unless his workouts exceed expectations, but maybe with our first 2nd rounder? His athleticism and length jump off the screen whenever you watch him.

24 on 10/17 with 7 boards, 2 nasty blocks at the rim, and only 1 TO on a big stage. Go Gata.

  7. Payton is currently on a 24 game streak of 14.2/5.7/4.8 on 48/24/76 shooting, an 18 to 6 good game/bad game split, improved defense over the last few games, and we're now on a positive net rating over the past 11 games when he's on the court (and significantly negative when he's off it).

At what point are we satisfied with this production?

I would like to see him put up those numbers when the games matter. I think it's concerning that him hitting his best stretch of the season coincides with us tanking. I know we haven't been tanking for the past 24 games, but we were heading in that direction.

Ibaka was clearly a huge problem for us this season, so I don't want to discredit that. But Payton has done nothing but continue to reestablish the fact that he's a streaky, inconsistent PG that most likely isn't the guy we need to lead us into the playoffs.

  8. If we're in the 6-7 range, I wonder if Vuc or Evan would be enough to move up a few spots (and swapping lotto picks). Obviously it depends on the team we'd be negotiating with and what their needs are. But I think we need to do whatever we have to do to get into that top tier.

  9. I would love to see us go 15-7 but i would hate to give up draft rights for meaningless wins... So i'm turn between to good options there..

ugh... If all it was is the right personnel, should traded oladipo for ross instead of ibaka...

You do realize that TOR would have had absolutely no reason to make that trade right? They needed a PF not another SG.

  10. The market seems to be very, very dry. If this is the best offer for Noel. What can we expect for i. e. Vuc?

That he won't be moved today. No way we get an offer anywhere close to good enough to move him now. He's value will still be high after the season, and could possibly even go up now that he's not going to be splitting post touches with Ibaka.

We need to hope for him to close the season out strong and see what the market looks like pre-draft.

  11. Jareth kept the forum entertaining during down time in my opinion. Pretty sure he's on twitter under the same name.

I personally found him to be absolutely obnoxious. It was all stupid nonsense and inside jokes with that guy and he was the most common poster. Glad he's not on here anymore. But just moving to Tennessee seems like a weird reason to stop posting. Was he not really a Magic fan and only posted here because he lived in the area? Now he's bugging Grizz fans? haha

  12. Again, how? Is Ross gonna make us that much better? They've been trying to win all year and look at the results. I am not worried about what they say.

As long as they don't trade our first for some quick fix player.

Well, I could see exactly that happening- that's what I'm worried about. If they are really not interested in tanking, then I could see then making a shortsighted trade, then coming out and potentially playing better now that we have Ibaka out of the locker room.

Hopefully the awfulness of this team will continue to shine through no matter what Vogel and Hennigan want and we continue to lose. The only consolation of ANOTHER awful year is to get as high of a pick as possible.

  13. If Vogel said "We plan on tanking" he'd be fined $20,000 or something by the league and we'd be investigated for not following the competition clause.

The entire point of tanking isn't to lose games more often, it's to put yourself in position to win less often. It's stupid doublethink but it's a weird legal issue.

I understand. But given the past remarks by him and Henny, this just reconfirms that they might really still be fighting for a playoff spot. We'll finish 10th in the conference and kill our draft spot.
