    The Magic' Roster 2009/10...

Paul Pierce was on the same boat as Vince Carter before he was gifted with Garnett and Allen. Let's see what Carter can do with great players around him.

Keep in mind that Houston is trying to get an injury exception for Yao Ming that could allow them to take on - I believe half of Yao's salary. That's how they signed Ariza. They still have their MLE now.

  8. Houston is over the cap. They would have to send out around 4.5 million to take in 5.8. Orlando can only take in around 3.7 million. So a third team would have to get involved. After signing Bass, Kyle Lowry would be a better acquisition than Landry. Orlando - Gets Kyle Lowry (HOU), 2nd Rd Pick(OKC) Houston - Gets Marcin Gortat (ORL) OKC - Gets Carl Landry (Hou)

    What about Ben Wallace??

He is going to take that buyout and ride off into the sunset. He was already talking retirement.

Gortat would be a base level player. He would have a 5.8 mil contract but be worth 2.9 in a trade to the Magic. So if we traded out 2.9, we could take back 125% of that + 100k = 3.725 million What would work is 2 separate deals. S&T Gortat to Houston for Carl Landry (3 million), and trade the TE for Shane Battier. That would probably mean no MLE deal, so Landry would be the backup PF instead of Bass and the rest of the roster would be minimum players/summer leagues C Howard/Vet Min/Rakovic PF Lewis/Anderson/Landry SF Battier/Pietrus/Vet Min or SL SG Carter/JJ/Vet Min or SL PG Nelson/AJ/Vet Min or SL

Not really a S&T but really a regular trade? I know we don't have to pay taxes for having the TE but you know, if they are aiming to get a player worth 7 million and the rest of the bench. We sign Hedo to his new contract, and then trade him to Toronto. Lets say his first year is worth 10 million. Due to the TPE and BYC clauses in the CBA, Hedo is a base year player. So even though the first year of his new deal is 10 million, he is not worth that much to Orlando in a trade. He is worth either: a) His previous year salary (around 7 mil) or B) 50% of the first year of his new deal (in this case, 5 million). Orlando will receive a traded player exception worth the higher of a) or B), which in this case is a). This link goes into a little more detail. the trade exception

quote: Originally posted by yeahright:I'm really curious how this works out with avoiding the luxury tax... I read the exception is for 7 million, can anybody confirm that? The 7 million makes more sense because Hedo would fall under BYC. We would be shipping out his last years salary, so that would be all we could take back. They won't pay tax on it until they use it to acquire someone, which will basically be like signing a free agent.

Report: Turk dealt to TOR for TPE. Page 17.

If Hedo is a BYC player, his trade value to Orlando would either be his previous years salary or 50% of his new contract, which ever was higher. It might be closer to 7 million. Per ESPN: quote: The Magic, meanwhile, were motivated to join in the trade because their participation, as opposed to merely letting Turkoglu walk, will create a valuable trade exception they can use in future deals worth around $7 million.

    the trade exception

Because there is 8 players on the roster, and we have nothing but a 5.8 MLE and min contracts fill out the rest of the team.

Bass also comes cheaper, letting us use the MLE for him and a vet min in possibly Ratliff. Then we can save the TPE for a true SF like Tayshaun Prince, Quentin Richardson, or Battier. Lee is slightly bigger and is a superior rebounder and passer. He played a lot of minutes at C in NY. His knock is defense, but he played next to Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph, and Al Harrington. Imagine him next to Dwight. What team in the league would outrebound a frontcourt of Dwight Howard and David Lee, with a 6'10 SF and Vince Carter at SG.

The Bulls have said Thomas wasn't on the market. Johnson is a 3/4 tweener, but I wouldn't call Gibson a tweener. True, but he is 6'9 and a bit thin which is similar to Thomas. When you factor in Noah that is a lot of raw offense in the frontcourt. I didn't think it was likely as I have seen that they don't want to move Thomas, but it looks better then most on that list and who knows with Otis.

With his salary only currently being half of the TPE, wouldn't you rather get more monetary value out of the $10M. I kind of like the idea of bringing in Hinrich, but I'm worried he would be getting paid too much to be a backup to Meerkat, who's already our allstar, starting PG. Orlando simply wouldn't be able to offer Hinrich enough TP. If they acquire a 10 million dollar player there is less of a chance they will use the MLE as that would push them further into the tax. If they grab a player between 5-7 million, and split the MLE to fill out the bench, we would have much more depth.

Otis can play hardball with David Lee now. Portland doesn't want him, Memphis doesn't want him, Toronto just used all their cap room, and the Knicks don't really want him back screwing up their cap for next year. He isn't getting close to 10 Million a year, and there is a legitimate chance that he wont get an offer for more than the MLE from anyone else. If they can get him for 6.5 - 7 million, the Knicks would be unlikely to match and would be open to a S&T. It wouldn't use the full TE, but after splitting the MLE to fill out the bench we would be plenty into the tax. David Lee is in a bad spot, this might be his best offer.

Free Agent Update from John Denton

4.5 for Bass and the rest for Nesterovic. 1 vet min wing, and the rest summer leaguers.
  23. Marvin Williams is restricted, and Atlanta would be stupid to not match the MLE.

    Roster overview

Here's my wishful thinking lineup PG Nelson/AJ SG Carter/JJ/Shannon Brown SF Lewis/Pietrus PF Sheed or Bass/Anderson/Hendrix C Howard/Battie Inactive: Rakovic, Pargo Versatility off the bench as MP can play 2/3, Brown can play the 1/2, Anderson and Battie can play the 3/4. Bass or Sheed could also play minutes at the 5.
