    Otis Smith is the man...

The most amazing part about what Otis has done is the potential now to no longer be concerned with adding major pieces. He can fill out the bottom of the roster with cheap vets chasing a ring. He can take fliers on prospects hoping that they turn into more, rather than praying that they can contribute. And on top of all that, we still have highly coveted assets that can make this team even better in the future. Parker/george hill Mason/Ginobili jefferson/Finley duncan/dejuan blair bonner/Mcdyess That is a nice rotation, but I'd still take ours. We are built for winning now, have more growth potential, and will be easily rebuilt in the future.

Hoops reports Gortat is very, very disappointed we matched.

quote: Originally posted by Quester:Gortat is an idiot? I think some of you are idiots. Now he must play 10 mpg in only a little bit better team. He knows he is a player who could be a starter in many teams in the league, but he can't do this. He came to NBA to play, not only to earn money. So he can be very disappointed, and a lot of polish fans too. He has ever right to be disappointed...for about five seconds. By now though, his mind set should be play my arse off, win a ring, and up my trade value so I can play for a good team, in a good city next year instead of say, Oklahoma City. No offense to OKC.
  4. quote: Originally posted by clarkn1237: quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery:At this point, Gortat is probably a legitimate top 20 center in the NBA. That says more about how bad the center position is right now than it does about him, but it means that the Magic have a top 20 center signed for the league average. Samuel Dalembert makes double that, and Gortat took his lunch money him in a playoff game that was Gortat's 6th start ever. In terms of basketball talent, this was a GREAT signing. Come on dude, seriously? I like Gortat but saying he's one of the 20 best centers in the league isn't saying much. I would much rather have had a proven vet like Mcdysse or Sheed on this team rather than Gortat for the money. Heck I wouldn't have minded us losing Gortat if it would have gotten us ZaZa, to me there about the same, cept ZaZa might have an edge in toughness. Bottom line is I think Gortat might be fools gold, and I'm either going to be dead wrong (which I hope I am) or I'm dead right, and if that's the case we're stuck with Ike Austin version 2.0 Did Ike Austin ever block a shot? I mean ever? Gortat block LBJ twice in about a three minute period. McDyess and Wallace were out of our range and quite frankly I think Bass is a better fit for us anyways. Look at it this way. We have a coveted center signed at a reasonable contract and an $8M trade exception to play with for the next year. How can you be upset about this?
  5. quote: Originally posted by clarkn1237: quote: Originally posted by Drunk on Mystery: quote: Originally posted by clarkn1237:I know everyone seems to be pumped about maybe getting Battier for Gortat, but why not try to get Bosh? I'm no cap expert but just looking at the salaries roughly I think that we could make it work. We all know that Bosh is going to opt out after this coming season and the odds are pretty good that he's not going back to the Raps, so I think they would be very interested in getting Gortat and teaming him up with Turk and Bargnani. So Bosh makes around $15 mil, I know that Gortat's salary is only worth about $3 mill in a trade right now cause of it being his first yr in a new contract, or something like that. So you take that $3 mil, plus the cash we got in the Turk deal that brings us in around $10, so then we throw in maybe Pietrus to make it work. So you give up Gortat, Pietrus and the trade exemption for Bosh, correct me if I'm off with the numbers. But man what a lineup of Nelson, Carter, Lewis, Bosh and Dwight. And if we pick up Barnes as a FA we really don't lose anything in Pietrus cause there almost the same player. Any takers on this trade? You can't combine a TE with a player salary to take on a larger salary. So no, there will be no takers on that trade. **** it, I knew it was too good to be true, so if that's the case, I'm kind of bummed/ticked that we resigned Gortat, I thought that we could land a TOP-NOTCH SUPERSTAR (and Battier isn't one of them) for Gortat + the TE but if we can't use the 2 together, I don't see us getting anything remotely close to being worth that kind of cash. Right when I think Otis does something good. So it looks like the Gortat signing will match the Lewis signing in one of the most OVERPAID contracts in the league. Relax man! After a year we can trade Gortat for the full value of the contract. So we are only overpaying him for one year. If we win the championship this year it will be well worth it, wouldn't you agree?!

Then we sign bass from them outright, so they expect us to just let them have gortat. So they're thinking it's going to be a swap, then we turn around and say we're keeping gortat as well. It is pretty cold but I'm just glad we're on the winning side of the transactions. You dont think they would of kept bass if they needed him and had enough money?? They werent saying "oh we'll let the magic have him, they need him." they didnt want to pay that much money for a backup PF. We dont owe mavs anything, this is a business not out here to make friends and look out for other teams. I agree that it's a business and you do whatever you can to get the upperhand. But if Otis matched gortat before we signed bass, dallas would have resigned bass. So the way Otis handled this situation deprived them of both. And officially makes him a badass
  8. quote: Originally posted by WestCoastMagicFan:IMO, I think we upgraded at 2 positions by picking up Bass. Lewis is a true 3 and is definitely an upgrade over Pietrus starting (If Lewis is moved back to SF). Even though Rashard is the better play, I feel Bass is still the better fit to start at the PF position. He's a better rebounder/shot blocker and he compliments Howard very well. Bass obviously isn't as good as Lewis at shooting but he can still bring defenders out of the paint with his mid-range jumper. I think our roster just got that much better. PG: Jameer Nelson SG: Vince Carter SF: Rashard Lewis PF: Brandon Bass C: Dwight Howard SF: Mickael Pietrus PF: Ryan Anderson PG: Anthony Johnson SG: J.J. Redick Possible free agents and summer leauge players that can hopefully fill out the rest of the roster: C: Theo Ratliff SF: Jeremy Richardson PF: Richard Hendrix PG: C.J. Watson (Maybe wishful thinking but I'd take him) I agree completely

A largely telling stat is the point differential when said player is on the court.....Carter's? A blistering +1.4....uhhhh....yeah.....a real game changer. A real goto guy. What's terrible is if you look at the guy's stats from just a couple years ago they're way up there.....but its easy to see.....this guy's at the end. People on here calling him a superstar is a complete joke. He didn't go to the all-star game last year? Why???? Uhhhh.....you guys keep convincing yourselves we got a "superstar"(LOL). And what's funnier at age 30 he signed a 4 year $61 million dollar deal.....MORE than Turk at the same age.. Interesting......especially the way some of the fans talk on here about not wanting Turk's contract. I started reading this, but then after the second sentence I realized it was prolly you and I stopped. Your opinion on the subject is no longer needed. We already know how you feel. If you cant understand why we're better off with Carter (a better player than Turk) for two years, rather than Turk for five, then your obviously not a very bright individual. Arguing this point with you has gotten really old.

However, Boston is getting older, there three stars and there "big" FA pickup are all older than Vince Carter, so what does that say for your other points? If he is on the downside, then aren't all of Boston's stars? How about Cleveland's big trade? Oh that's right, Shaq. Wow, he's older than VC as well. Maybe they should all sit in rocking chairs together on the porch of Cracker Barrel and wait to die. This made me lol!

How many teams has Dutt floated out there now supposedly looking at Bass? I think it's up to 8 now and none of them have actually looked at Bass it was just Dutt trying to get Otis to panic like he did that time with Lewis. Thankfully Otis has learned his lesson from that first time and will not over pay for Bass. And yes I see us getting Bass. It's too bad the Magic will have to deal with this agent again. And imo your right about Chad Ford. I can just picture Dutt taking a phone call (prolly from his secretary) right before Bass signs the contract and telling Otis its Detroit making another offer. What a dousche this guy is!

Magic fans should expect a 3-5 seed. Thank you very little for this post. Let us know who Vince has ever had on his team in the playoffs and than we'll talk. Oh, so he can't carry a team? He's OLD!!!! NJ ripped us off big time. This guy has already lost a step. He shot terrible from the field(a huge sign age is creeping up). Otis and Stan got robbed. So your contention is that Hedo is a better player than Carter because Carter is old and has lost a step? Have you seen Hedo play? He's never even HAD a step! Your argument against Carter in the playoffs is also weak. When has Carter ever played with a dominating center like Dwight, and knock down shooters at every position? We're waiting...c'mon tell us

Hollinger acts like the Magic HAD to be involved in the deal. It obviously helped, but the other teams could have still worked out their other plans and left the Magic out completely. The only possible negative impact I see is that they now can be a player in going after Barnes. If Otis was interested in him, the asking price might have just gone up. Personally, I'm not going to lose any sleep over whether or not Matt Barnes is on the Magic roster. Regardless, we can get a player a whole lot better than Barnes or Bass with $8M when the teams that want to play in next years FA game have to dump more salary now that the salary cap for next year has been reduced so significantly. That's not exactly true. We are the only team that could actually sign and trade Hedo to Toronto, so they had to involve us to get the deal done. A future pick would have been ideal but the trade exeption is still a really nice insurance policy in case we need to make a deal down the road. besides, is anyone really that afraid of Toronto? We may have let them off the hook a bit, but we also added tremendous trade flexibility by participating in the deal.

"The NBA's ballyhooed free-agent summer of 2010 might have quietly taken another hit late Tuesday night. In a memo announcing next season's salary cap and luxury-tax threshold, sent out shortly before the league's annual July moratorium on signings and trades was lifted at 12:01 a.m. ET Wednesday, NBA teams also received tentative projections from the league warning that the cap is estimated to drop to somewhere between $50.4 million and $53.6 million for the 2010-11 season." What's the cap at now?
  24. quote: Originally posted by Darth Evil Dead:I was all in for getting Bass a couple of days ago. You pay him 5 mil a year, move Shard to the 3, and he goest out there and bangs and gets some rebounds and put backs. But that was before I watched Ryan Anderson play summer ball. I know its SL, but watching Ryan play in the two games so far...it just shows this kid has talent. He is not a stiff...He is not Garrity clone that just catches and shoots. He is a ball player. He can shoot the 3, drive to the hole and dunk, and rebound with authority. Ryan is the future with Orlando. Even though he is playing aginst rookies and D-League prospects...this cat can play period. He is like a Shard Lewis that can rebound. His game fits in perfect with Howard. So even though Ryan might come off the bench this season...I believe that Ryan will be our future starting 4 in a season. So if Ryan is a future starting PF for the magic, why would we pay Bass a undersized PF that can kind of shoot 5 mil for 5 years? It just does not make any sense. I am leaning toward matching Gortats offer and keeping him. We can increase Gortats minutes by having him play the 5 and 4 in different situation. Because honestly...there is no pack up center out there this year that is work a d@m. In the future if we do get an alright back up center...we could always trade Gortat. I think we should stay way from Bass, and let Ryan develope. I agree, Gortat is a tremendous trade asset at the very least. I bet close to half the league would be interested in this guy as a starter especially at his salary. Signing Gortat would likely yield at a least one quality player and maybe a draft pick in trade value and then Otis can stick to his plan of splitting the MLE on players to fill out the roster.
  25. quote: Originally posted by MagicFanBen:I would like this discussion to be about two different line ups we can put on the floor. One would be to leave Lewis as the starting PF. The other would be to move him back to SF. Either way I am kind of confused as to what is best for the Magic. If Otis matches Gortat what does that do to the Magic and their Rotation??? Do we still chase Bass??? If so how much time will he see at Power Forward??? Do we move Lewis back to the SF position??? If not are we prepared to start Pietrus at the SF position??? And if we start Pietrus, would it not be smart to chase some back ups for the small forward over the PF if we match Gortat??? It seems like we can go one of two ways. We stay with Lewis at PF and match Tat. Then the bulk of all minutes behind Howard and Lewis got to Anderson and Tat. There will be no other minutes as we saw last season with Battie hardly sniffing the court and last season we did not have a young big man like Ryan Anderson that needed floor time. Then you pick up a guy like Ratliff as your third center. THE ONLY thing that makes sense to chase Bass is if we intend to allow him, Gortat and Anderson to fight for the starting power forward position in camp. Thus moving Lewis back to his SF position. Pietrus would then back up Lewis and JJ backs up Carter. So look at what we have at the PF position with those three guys. You have height and defense with Tat, you have a mid range game and stocky muscle in Bass and then you have a more refined finesse game in Anderson. Obviously if you could combine all three of those guy's best basketball qualities that would be your ultimate power forward. Is it possible to let all three guys split the starting position up equally depending on the team we play and the match up on the floor??? We know Lewis does not cut it there against bigger teams. We know Pietrus is great as our top 6th man. SO does it make sense for all three guys to know they will split up the PF position where one guy may start one night and a different guy may start the next night? Is that fair and would SVG do it? Which means splitting up the MLE makes a lot more sense because you can get wing men a lot cheaper than you can big men. I don't think you rotate the starting position between the three, but you could certainly play any one of them more minutes based on matchups.
