Can you show one possession when on the fast break he decided to shoot a 3 but lost a line and took a long 2 which he airballed? Or when he was spinning without any progress around himself just waisting time? Awkward miss on the short jumper from the corner? Badly missed free throw? (Wizards game)

Your argument would make sense if I had said, "he's a flawless basketball god". I'm saying in general I feel like he is hustling on defense. For a rookie that hasn't played basketball in a long time, that makes me happy.

Let’s see...he looks too small to defend PFs and too slow to keep up with SFs. And yes, on offence he is just lost...hopefully he gets better with the time, so far I do not see much potential

I feel like I see him flying around the floor to cover multiple people and fill in the gaps when others miss assignments. Here he is covering a guard:

Lol. Yes but by now, he is what he is. Great game followed by 3 inefficient ones. He’s just not good in the way we use him. We rely way to much on him. He should never be the focal point of your offense. Unless he is making shots, one of every 4 games.

I'm hoping Ross will get better shots up when he's not the only guy on the second unit who can score. Cole is a playmaker and scorer, and Chuma can at least space the floor.

I'm not sure where the idea Cliff doesn't play the younger players comes from.

Rookie Cody Zeller was 6th on the roster in total minutes.

Rookie Frank Kaminsky also 6th on his roster in total minutes.

Rookie Malik Monk had to compete with Batum, Lamb and Kemba for minutes and still played 13mpg. Rookie Dwayne Bacon played 13mpg that season also.

Mo Bamba was a massive project who got injured midway through the season and still played 16mpg and nearly 800 total mins as a rookie.

Jonathan Isaac played 26mpg in his second season. Wes Iwundu played 18mpg in his second season.

It's not like he's ever had a rookie so talented he was being an idiot not giving them more minutes either. Cody Zeller might actually be the best player he coached when they were a rookie. (Hopefully to be replaced by 1 or all of Cole, Okeke and maybe Bamba)

Thank you for the stats! I never understood why people had that idea of Cliff. He gives young guys lots of minutes.

So barring any trades, this is pretty much our team for next season:

    PG) Fultz/Anthonly/Carter-Williams

    SG) Fournier/Ross/Bacon

    SF) Ennis/Okeke/Isaac(i)

    PF) Gordon/Aminu/Clark

    C) Vucevic/Bamba/Birch

We have reportedly signed Kasim Mane to a 2-way contract, so we have one more of those to fill. My guess would be BJ Johnson might get that, but we will see.  Guesstimating that Ennis is going to get $3 - 3.5M, and that MCW is going to get $4 -4.5M, that puts us between $1.5 -2.5M under the luxury tax threshold.

I know that the team has applied for an injured player exception of about $3.68M for Isaac, but unless they make a trade to open up space under the tax-line, I don't see them using it. The fact that they have applied for it at all does indicate to me that there may still be some talks going on to make a trade; and they want that extra exception if it comes about. I would guess something where we would be sending out two players, but only getting one back, and cutting $2 - 2.5M in salary would open up both a roster space and luxury tax-line space to use the $3.68M injured player exception. (Edit) Sending out one player for a future draft pick would also work - maybe Khem Birch to Detroit - I hear they are collecting centers right now? Seriously though, someone in the market for a cheap, serviceable backup center might be interested in Khem.

I'm not sure how much of the MLE is still available, as I'm not sure if re-signing MCW, Ennis, or Clark counted against it. I think MCW and Ennis might, but I don't think Clark does, as he was a restricted free agent and we did make his qualifying offer.

This is really good info. I think we need Khem, though. Especially with Bamba recovering from COVID, we don't know if he can play 18 minutes a game.

It's a long story about mediocrity I've repeated a lot of times... :)

Obviously we want to make the playoffs, but being 8th in a weak east isn't really a big achievement. The target should be at least being a contender, after so many years of rebuilding. But unfortunately I haven't seen any move that suggest we're heading in the right direction recently.

Which specific moves do you think would get us headed in the right direction?

I like DiVincenzo, I think he plays pretty tough, and is a constant movement kind of guy; but I don't like him well enough to give up our best screener and move down 9 spaces in a mediocre draft. Will there be a decent guy left at 24? Maybe. But even if he is in the same "tier" of talent as the guy you get at 15, the choices and "fit" won't be the same. If you like a guy (or two) in that tier, you are better off at 15, where you are more likely to get him.

I agree. Without the pick "swap", this deal makes more sense. I just hope Bamba can handle full time backup center duties next year.

Orlando Magic get: Donte DiVincenzo and the No. 24 pick in the 2020 draft (via Milwaukee Bucks)

I wouldn't do this deal. Maybe I'm missing something, but we would give up Khem and slide down 9 spots in the draft to get a below average shooter. That's on a team where Giannis is getting people open shots, too. Does Donte DiVincenzo do something I don't see in his stats?

You believe what you want. Regardless of facts. Test more and surprise more cases. Death rate has fallen off a cliff btw. 80% asymptomatic forever. What does that tell you? Oh nevermind.

    Go Magic!!!

Actually, the percentage of positive tests has gone from 4% to 16% in the last 30 days.

Yeah but that's not a big part of his game yet. He's 18th in the league at points off of drives over the last 5 games. Extra minutes is only going to get him another 1-2 ppg on drives.

Let me put it this way. Last 5 games fultz is at 14.6ppg or whatever. Westbrook is at 23ppg. Jrue is at 23.

Fultz is averaging 8ppg on drives. Westbrook is at 8.4ppg on drives. Jrue is at 9.2.

Fultz gets 3.8ppg on pull ups. Westbrook 6.4. jrue 8.6

So the difference between fultz game and similar players isn't driving more. It's shooting more. And we don't know if he's going to be able to incorporate that into his game yet.

That's really insightful. I hadn't thought about the volume from each spot.

  11. 1 hour ago, Fultz4thewin said:

The thing is I'm using his recent numbers and if you look at his stat breakdown he's already driving the ball like a franchise player. Only 5 players have more drives per game over the last 5 games.

So there's not a ton of juice left to squeeze out of what he's currently doing other than just playing a few more minutes per game unless we're going to give him Trae Young usage which I'm not sure is conducive to winning.

The increase from 17ppg in 32ish mpg to 20 or 25 or 30 isn't going to come from more of how he's currently playing, it's going to come from his spot up shooting, pull up shooting, and cutting off ball (which comes as a result of teams defending him off ball). While we're seeing signs of him being able to improve in these areas I'm not ready to pencil them in yet.

But this is all pretty much validating why several members on here were excited about trading for him. He's a good defender (not great) who is really good at getting through screens and has a really high basketball IQ on defense which is evident by all of the clutch plays he makes on that end regularly. And on offense he can get wherever he wants whenever he wants and beats good defenders off the dribble.

If the shot never comes back he's an above average starting point guard.

We all talk about his shot coming back, but outside of the three, it's effective. He's second on the team in mid-range %, and he's shooting 80% from the free throw line. Even his three is improving nicely. He's at 33% over the last 7 games. I'm excited to see where he'll be by year end.

That's a little misleading. He really shut down backups but whenever they put him on talented offensive players he struggled. And that's fine. He's a pretty good defender. But not some elite guy.

Ah, I didn't think about that. I wonder if there is a stat that factors in the offensive skill/efficiency of the guy you're defending.

I love Wes. I thought his defense was excellent last season. If his shooting from the second half of the season holds (43% from 3), he'll be a great 3 and D player for us this season.

I read that he was the 5th best defender in the entire NBA by opponent field goal percentage. I love the guy.
