Ok, I had some time so here's some math.

Vuc has a $19,875,000 cap hold right now

Ross has a 15,750,000 cap hold

Our first round pick has a $2,176,000 cap hold

Every open roster spot to get us up to the 12 man roster minimum has a $897,158 cap hold

We have a $333,333 cap hold for stretching CJ Watson

The MLE has a $9,246,000 cap hold. If we need our cap space we renounce the MLE but that becomes a $5,700,000 room exception

Im pretty sure the most we can offer Ross in an extension today is something in the 4/56 ballpark. That's broken down like: 12,600,000, 13,600,000 14,600,000 15,600,000

The salary cap should be near $109,000,000

The luxury tax should be near $132,000,000

Right now if we let every free agent go but keep vucevic and Ross we have $123,402,581 on the books entering free agency with that number dropping 7-10 million because neither vucevic nor Ross are getting a first year salary exceeding their cap hold.

If we keep Birch, Ross, and let every other free agent go we have $105,347,066 on the books which should drop to 102m once Ross' cap number is reduced but would also jump back up because Birch's cap hold is only 1.8m

If we keep Birch and let everyone else go we have $90,493,225 on the books.

Stretching Mozgov turns his 1 year 16,720,000 into a 3 year contract worth $5,573,333. In most cases though it also adds another $896,158 for an open roster spot. So basically that turns the previous scenario with 18.5 million in cap space into 28.5 million in cap space.

The most cap room I can conceivably come up with results from letting every free agent walk, stretching Mozgov, trading fournier and the 16th pick for JR Smith's partially guaranteed contract worth $3,870,000. That gets us down to $65,660,704 on the books. That gets us $43,339,296 in cap room.

So basically, it's most likely that we end up just having the MLE this summer unless we really love a guy who definitely wants to come here.

Ok sweet so were getting jr Smith 2 superstars to play with ag issac bamba and fultz. What's not to like?

So, if  the rumors that we heard at the trade deadline were true  and we could have traded Vucevic and Ross and gotten something in return (like picks) but then we would not have  made the playoffs.  Was making the playoffs (assuming we do not resign both)  worth not getting anything in return?   I am of the opinion that no it was not, that we should have traded them and looked at our future.    Yeah it was fun to watch but I still see this as a management miscalculation, a management blunder.  Vuc should be gone meaning we get nothing in return and I could see a contender giving Ross a one or two year deal worth some bucks (and we get nothing for him if that happens)  Ross had no open looks for us (Toronto did a great defensive job against him) but how many open looks would he have had against us.  And please, do not say we get $22 million in salary relief because if we did not mortgage our future for the playoffs we could have had that relief plus picks.  What we are left with is resigning both or getting nothing in return for who we do not resign.  Neither one is a particular good option.

Eh you dont know what was offered for vuc and Ross. It's very reasonable that it wasnt worth more than the playoff experience and development if our young guys. Telling the guys there's a new floor for the team is a pretty big deal imo

So...we are looking for guys who can only shoot the 3 or cut to the basket, and play decent defense? Dang, I must be old school.  I can see a team like ours having to resort to that style because we don't have a legitimate superstar who can create on their own. Next year, when hopefully Fultz is healthy, is he going to be the guy who drives and kicks it out?

Fultz with a jumper, college Fultz, is the ideal cornerstone for the modern and future NBA player. He can create space with his handles and his athleticism.  He also creates space with his lateral quickness and long arms. Watch the difference between a Gordon crossover (shorter arms) and a Isaac crossover. The space created is apparent.

It can be Birch but he was kind of crappy this series. Can a 6'9 center be our starter for a year? Maybe. Can he rim run regularly? Maybe.

He had a PER of 19 this year but how much of that is because hes playing against 2nd squads that I doubt scout Birch for his rim running. I like Birch a lot in just not sold on an uptick in his production given more minutes

If I remember correct, we still signed Turkoglu as well before trading T-Mac.

I don't know if we ever end up getting Rashard tho, because is was trading Francis and the expiring contracts we got in return that gave us the cap space we needed to pull in Shard. And by the time we were ready for our run, Rashard was definitely the better choice over T-Mac at that point of their respective careers. So in the long run, getting rid of T-Mac was probably best for us anyways. But it certainly is an interesting "what if".

I understand that things were beyond his control here, and Grant Hill's health situation really sabotaged us from really being able to truly improve (Grant Hill I'll never hold any ill will towards, because you want to talk about busting ass, how hard he busted his ass to fight through those injuries to get back on the court for us. I'll always admire Grant Hill even if he never lived up to the hopes we had for him). But the way he was such a little weasel by the end and threw everyone else under the bus is what really bothered me.

But I would probably agree that what Dwight did was much worse than what T-Mac did. At the very least, at least T-Mac wasn't going to every city we traveled to during the season talking about how much he'd love to play for the team we were about to face.

In my hierarchy of Magic hatred:

    1. Hennigan

    2. Dwight

    3. T-Mac

The difference with Dwight and T-Mac is, at least they actually gave us positive things to cheer about. Hennigan was just a walking dumpster fire from the word go.

And dwight leaving was a blessing in disguise because of all the games he missed due to Injury

Yes. Like I said earlier—I’m eating crow but I’m completely happy to be doing so.

Gordon was the only guy who seemed ready for the moment. Went hard on both ends and didn’t at any moment look like a scared dog with his tail between his legs.

Respect to him. Here’s to hoping him tasting the playoffs motivates him more then ever now.

    I’m with you AG.

I stand in alliance with Air Gordon. I hope we see him at alot of playoff games watching on like a pissed off Mr. T and then training over the summer

  7. Not gonna lie I'll be glad to switch over to draft mode for a little while. These games have me so heated. But I gotta tell you if we have a healthy Fultz, Isaac, Gordon, and Bamba next season it will be the FUNNEST Magic season in a long time, even if we dont win as many games. All 4 of those players should have some sort of physical advantage over 93% of the league at their respected positions

They are just better. Least these guys got a brief glimpse of what playoff basketball requires

I'll go ahead and wave the home white flag and admit it. Somehow, the team with a top 5 player in the league, 3 former all stars, 2 defensive player of the year recipients, 1 finals mvp and multiple NBA champions , and perhaps the deepest bench in the league that finnished as the 2 seed is better than our young Magic
