Champions Greece Past First Test

By Yarone Arbel

03 September 2007

The EuroBasket champs from Greece successfully started their campaign to defend the title with a 76-66 win over Israel in the second game of Group A tonight in Granada.

Israel, coming into the game with some huge momentum from the additional qualifying round, put up a big fight against the title-holders.

Greece couldn't put their opponents away until the final quarter, when they caught fire

from long range, connecting on five of seven three-point shots at one point.

They came to EuroBasket without the injured Antonis Fotsis and feared it might affect the team's performance, but tonight they had nothing to worry about.

Russia Overwhelm Serbia

By Yarone Arbel

03 September 2007

If someone had any doubts about Andrei Kirilenko's performance in this EuroBasket after a sub-par NBA season, then the opening night of EuroBasket sent out a big message.

The Russian forward led his team to a key 73-65 win in the tournament's opener against Serbia on Monday night in Granada's Group A game.

Kirilenko finished the game with 24 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and drew seven fouls, but every play he made was in the best timing to keep his team on the winning side.

Serbia had a bad shooting night.

Darko Milicic was shutdown by a great defensive team effort by Russia, and was representative of Serbia's poor shooting, connecting on just two of his 13 shots.

His front line teammate Zoran Erceg converted only a single free throw shot of his six attempts to symbolize Serbia's poor form from the line (58%).

Russia stormed the court from the first moment to take a 9-0 lead after three minutes, before Marko Jaric scored the first points for Serbia.

Russia's team play was on display from the very beginning as four players shared the first 11 points of the team.

Kirilenko collected seven points by the end of the first quarter when his team took a 21-13 lead, but didn't think about stopping.

Serbia couldn't find any answer for the aggressive Russian defense and by the 13th minute David Blatt's guys were already doubling Serbia's points, 31-15 after J.R. Holden connected a mid range shot.

That was when the Russian machine took a rest.

For the next 5:20 Russia added only three points, all from the charity stripe, but Serbia was still struggling and used that to reduce the game to only 10 points, 34-24.

Another small push by Serbia made it just a six point game, before Nikita Morgunov sealed the half with a key mid-range shot, not his last in the game, to make it 38-30 after two quarters.

After shooting only 37% from two-point range and a miserable 43% from the line in the first half, Serbia was still down by only eight, and had a reason to be optimistic but the first minutes of the second half changed that feeling.

Milos Teodosic hit three points from the line to make it just a five point game, and then Kirilenko stepped up.

He accounted for four points in a row, drew the third foul from Zoran Erceg and with a downtown arrow capped a 10-0 run to make it 48-33 after 25 minutes, only to see his team fall asleep again.

Teodosic hit another three pointer to start a Serbian 13-0 run, and make it just a two point game, but now it was time for Kirilenko to step up again.

With two minutes to go in the third Milan Gurovic missed a three pointer that could have give Serbia the first lead of the night, and saw Kirilenko show how to do it with an and-1 play, and the gap was back to five, 51-46, on the way to a 54-48 Russian lead with 10 minutes to play.

With the game slowly running away Serbia made one last effort.

Russia held a 70-63 lead with 1:38 to play when Milicic posted up, but once again Kirilenko came for the help and blocked his shot away.

Morgunov, once again, was there to hit the clutch shot, this time from long range, to make it a ten point game and decide the game.

"If we don't win tomorrow then today's win means nothing," said Russian's coach, David Blatt referring to the game against Israel that can secure Russia a spot in the next round.

Serbia will face the champs from Greece in the second game.

Vitols Helps Latvia Stun Croatia

By Jeff Taylor

03 September 2007

Latvia upset Croatia 85-77 tonight in Seville to get off to a flying start at EuroBasket 2007.

Armands Skele led five players in double-figures with 17 points but captain Aigars Vitols, who only had eight, made his baskets when it mattered most for the Baltic side.

Leading by just two points with 6:26 to go in the third quarter Vitols - who did not start in the game - buried a three-pointer to make it 46-41.

He then struck immediately on defense, knocking away a Davor Kus pass and chasing the ball down before following up his own missed lay-up for a 48-41 advantage

Lithuania Too Much For Turkey

Lithuania made Sarunas Jasikevicius's return to the National Team a special one as the 2003 EuroBasket champions cruised past Turkey 86-69 to grab an opening day victory in Group C.

Jasikevicius, widely regarded as one of Europe's best players, fought off a knee injury to collect 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a dominating Lithuania win.

Rimantas Kaukenas added 14 points while Linas Kleiza and Darius Songalia each had 12 points, and Ramunas Siskauskas added 10.

"This was a difficult game for us. It was the start of the European championship and against a very strong Turkey team. They are great team and have one of the best coaches in Europe. The start was very hard, but we played a lot better later, especially in the defence. But this is just the first game of the tournament," said Lithuania coach Ramunas Butautas.

Butautas's team out-rebounded Turkey 42-31, off-setting a shaky showing from beyond the three-point arc as the Lithuanians made just six-of-18 treys.

"We knew we definitely needed to start good. Turkey is an emotional team and we knew they would start strong. But it's just one win. There are still eight more to go," added Kleiza.

Turkey, who were led by 18 points from Hidayet Turkoglu and 17 from Ibrahim Kutluay, led 10-5 in the early stages.

But 10 first quarter points by Siskauskas pushed Lithuania ahead 19-16 after one period.

Turkey were in front for the final time 24-23 on Kutluay's three-pointer, as a Jasikevicius three-pointer sparked a 10-0 run.

The lead grew to as high as 12 before Lithuania went into the locker-room ahead 44-36.

Butautas's side opened the second half on a 10-2 run for a 54-38 lead.

Turkey trailed 63-48 after three periods and eventually closed to within 10 points on two occasions, but Jasikevicius, Songalia and Kleiza all hit three-pointers down the stretch to keep Turkey away.

Turkey coach Bogdan Tanjevic said Lithuania belongs among the favourites of the tournament, adding: "We found them on a roll tonight. I think they are one of the best teams in Europe. And they played a great game tonight. They showed all the talent they have and beat us in everything."

Turkey take on Germany on Tuesday while Lithuania face the Czech Republic.

Late Rally Sees Germany Overcome Czechs

By David Hein

03 September 2007

Dirk Nowitzki collected 35 points and 11 rebounds and Mithat Demirel added 18 points off the bench as Germany held off the Czech Republic 83-78 in overtime in their Group C opener in Palma de Mallorca.

"This was a lot tougher than we thought it would be. But it was good that we held together," said Nowitzki, who tallied 21 of his points after the break while also adding one steal and two blocked shots.

While Nowitzki was his usual NBA MVP self throughout the game, Demirel really stepped up in the fourth period and in the extra session as he hit 11 of 14 foul shots. None were bigger than his pair to give Germany an 81-78 lead with 28 seconds to play.

Demirel then drew an offensive foul charge on Jakub Houska with 18 seconds remaining,

allowing Demond Greene to ice the game with a break-away dunk just seconds later.

"We tried to stop Nowitzki and couldn't, and the only other player to do anything for them was Demirel. We let two people beat us tonight, so that's very disappointing," said Czech guard Pavel Benes.

Ademola Okulaja did contribute a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds and afterwards said: "Everybody is happy to get the first victory in the tournament and we can look forward to the next game. But we need to improve, especially on our defence."

Jiri Welsch paced the more-balanced Czechs with 22 points while Lubos Barton had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Houska had 12 points.

Neither team could find much of a rhythm offensively early on even though Barton opened the game with a three-pointer as the Czechs pulled ahead 5-0.

The pair of Barton and Welsch helped keep the Czechs ahead 14-12 after one period. Germany struggled to get the ball to Nowitzki, who scored six points but took just five shots.

The NBA star began taking more initiative on offense against the Czech box-and-one defense. Nowitzki's driving lay-up trimmed the deficit to 19-16. But Germany proved unable to score without their main man, and Zdenek Hummel's side opened a six-point lead on a three-point play by Petr Benda (22-16) and Barton's three-pointer (25-19).

A jumper by Demirel got Germany back to within 27-25 with 1:13 remaining. But Maurice Whitfield and Barton drained jumpers for the 31-25 half-time scoreline.

The lead was 43-26 after Welsch's free throw with 2:13 to play in the third period. But Nowitzki's three-pointer started a 10-1 run to close the third period, which Germany led 46-44 following Nowitzki's two foul shots with 13 seconds left.

That gave the Germans a strong push into the final period and they went ahead 56-51 on back-to-back three-pointers by Nowitzki and Okulaja. The Czechs eventually evened things at 74-74 with 10 seconds remaining with two foul shots by captain Ladislav Sokolovsky.

Nowitzki's jumper from the left wing gave Germany a 79-76 lead with 50 seconds left before Demirel's heroics.

Parker, Turiaf Get France Past Brave Poland

By Cindy Garcia-Bennett

03 September 2007

Poland put on a brave fight but it wasn't enough as they lost 74-66 to France in the opening Group D match in Alicante.

The Poles trailed 61-55 early in the fourth quarter and had a chance to steal the momentum, but failed to beat the 24-second shot clock and turned the ball over.

Ronny Turiaf scored a jumper the next trip down the court to give France an eight point lead at 63-55.

"It was very important for me to come up strong in the fourth quarter," Turiaf said afterwards."I had missed some shots earlier in the game and I was a bit down.

"Fortunately the coach put me down low and I was able to get a couple of baskets that strengthened our lead."

Polish veteran Adam Wojcik had a game-high 19 points in the loss and shot eight of 10 from the floor (80%).

"We did our job which was to remain in the game for as long as possible," said the 37-year-old

Wojcik."We missed wide open shots and France kept their noses in front."

Tony Parker led France in scoring with 16 points but had a tough day shooting the ball, going five of 16 from the field (31%).

He had nine points at the break and Boris Diaw chipped in with eight while Polish veteran Adam Wojcick was keeping his team in the game with 11.

Les Bleus' biggest lead of the half was 22-12 on a Parker jump shot.

But Poland then reeled off eight unanswered points, capped off by a Andrzej Pluta jumper, to cut the deficit to just two,

22-20.

Again, France threatened to build a big lead when they went up 33-26 on a Sanya Giffa three-pointer, but their opponents once again closed the gap trailing by just three, 33-30, at half time.

Wojcik's lay-up saw Poland jump in front 36-35 at the start of the third quarter but France soon regained the lead on Parker's three-point bomb.

Les Bleus then used a 6-0 surge at the end of the quarter to take a 60-53 advantage going into the final stanza.

France were 11 of 26 (42.3%) from three point-range, with seven different players connecting from long range. Poland were a poor four of 19 from (21%) outside the perimeter.

Slovenia Win At Buzzer

By Cindy Garcia-Bennett

03 September 2007

Jaka Lakovic buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Slovenia a 69-68 triumph over Italy in the team's Group D opener in Alicante.

The Italians thought they had won the game when Matteo Soragna's three-ball gave his team a 68-66 lead with five seconds remaining,

But the Slovenian guard had the last say.

"I had no time to think and that's why I made the shot," said a delighted Lakovic.

Slovenia almost shot themselves on the foot, having led 60-47 with five minutes left to play, they allowed Italy to take a 64-63 lead with one minute left on the clock.

"At that point I thought that we didn't have the character to win big games or to kill games off," said Matjaz Smodis, who led Slovenia in scoring with 19 points.

"In the end, we showed that we do have that character and that today's victory was merit of what we had done in the previous three quarters."

Smodis scored nine points to help Slovenia establish a 21-14 lead by the end of the opening quarter.

Slovenia then stepped up their defense and limited Italy to just two points over the next four minutes to extend their advantage to 28-16.

Lakovic's three-ball gave Slovenia their biggest lead at 38-23.

Matteo Soragna's layup allowed the Azzurri to go into the break trailing 38-25.

Italy made just one of 10 from outside the arc in the first half.

The Azzurri emerged from the changing room a different team with an 11-0 run at the start of the third quarter cutting the Slovenia lead to 38-36.

Angelo Gigli scored seven points in that surge.

But their opponents hit right back with a 16-4 run of their own as Smodis continued to provide many of the points.

Slovenia went into the last quarter leading 56-45.

Ales Pipan's side limited Italy to just two points over the next five minutes to take a 60-47 lead.

Massimo Bulleri ended Italy's drought by scoring the next three points.

Bulleri remained heavily involved and his three-point play cut the deficit to 62-61 with less than two minutes remaining.

"Perhaps not all of us are on the same boat," said Bulleri, who had a game-high 20 points, 11 of which came in the last quarter.

"But the will is there."

"We must show more focus in offense and defense tomorrow."

Slovenia were superior shooting the ball from three-point range, they were five of 17 (29%) while Italy were four of 22 (19%).

Russia Stifle Israel To Stay Perfect

Russia secured their spot in the next round of EuroBasket 2007 with an easier than expected 90-56 win over Israel on the second day of games in Group A in Granada.

Israel dropped to 0-2 and must beat Serbia tomorrow to qualify to the next round.

The Russian side took a double digit lead already at the end of the first half, but took total control over the game in the first minutes of the second half behind a massive effort.

"Our players approached the game in the right way with the right attitude and the right level of energy," commented the coach of the winning side, David Blatt.

Energy surely wasn't missing tonight for Russia.

Andrei Kirilenko, for the second night in a row, turned in a big performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds, turning in 10 boards, five assists and two blocks in the first half alone.

In the first half it took him some time to get into a scoring rhythm so he focused on helping his teammates produce.

Israel was in the game for one quarter, and trailed 17-15 after ten minutes, but Sergei Monya scored five points to lead a 7-0 Russian run early in the second quarter.

Kirilenko added five points of his own to bring Russia to the half time break with a 37-23 advantage.

Russia went on an 18-2 run to open the second half.

Even the ever lasting fighting Israeli team realized the meaning of that.

The last 15 minutes of the game were garbage time.

"I'm not happy and satisfied with the way we played, but we have to recover for tomorrow, because this is how it works in EuroBasket," said the Israeli coach, Zvi Sherf, speaking from experience.

Lior Eliyahu tried to save some of Israel's pride and managed to collect 17 points, but Russia kept hammering and finished the game with a 34 point win.
