Chosen54721 Posted June 19, 2025 Report Posted June 19, 2025 I am really enjoying the PG conversations, and I, for whatever reason have been keeping an eye on Dennis Schroder's situation in Detroit. I think he makes sense coming off the bench for us, if Detroit moves away from in this off season. Quote

How do the Pacers have 3 pg’s that can all run that offense and we struggle to find one? San Antonio is about to have the same problem if they draft Dylan Harper with Fox and Castle already there. Those are the types of teams we need to try and trade with. +1 I agree Quote

The only thing they have in common is they can shoot. Bane is a pick and roll playmaker. He plays closer to our guy Steph than he does those forwards. No he does not play closer to Steph. Some players try to imitate Steph. You miss my point. I don't disagree with you on Bane's ability, versatility. . . and maybe basketball acuity. In my opinion, Bane would best be used solely as a shooting guard, his ability to make 3-point shots, is a distractor from other teams that were sagging in the paint with 3 or 4 players surrounding Franz and Banchero to prevent them from scoring close to the basket. Another strategy that other teams used to prevent the Magic from getting to the basket is "zone play". They were not concerned about other Magic players because of lack of 3-point shooters. In the last half of the season, did you not see how Franz was missing easy layups? He got close to the basket and tossed the ball over the basket. And yes, I watched plenty of the Grizzlies games. I am a basketball and football junkie. :) Edit: We shouldn't plan to use a newcomer based on how they occasionally played for another team. For example: Aaron Gordon was used as a ball handler on the Magic a number of times, but he is not a ball handler for Denver and it has worked out for that team. In watching Denver games, I have seen Aaron playing a lot on the perimeter and in the corner, not as a ball handler. Quote

But he plays more like him than the catch and shoot players you keep mentioning that need to be set up. Bane plays like a combo guard. He also is a good drive and kick player. He is good on the ball moves off the ball also. His 3 point gravity will open up the court greatly for our two all stars. I think your hung up on PG v SG. I look at the modern league as Guards, Wings, and Bigs. There are way less defined roles as players are far more versatile. Golden State is a big reason for this when they were using their death line up with Draymond playing center. There are a lot of ways to win. Jokic and Denver won a lot differently than Golden State who won a lot differently than Boston. We are much closer to The Boston team construction. Quote

I think it’s valid to question our offensive system. Quote
All Eyes On Me Posted June 19, 2025 Report Posted June 19, 2025 I think we’re still over focusing on adding a point guard. I’m at work, so I can’t dig in too deep now, but I have to imagine that the unrecognized assists from Paolo and Franz last year when they made the right read and the wide open shooter just bricked the shot were probably multiple a game. So let’s say Paolo and Franz both add 1.5 assists to their stat lines and then we have Bane who should average 5 or so. For context, Cole averaged 2.9 assists per game last year, and KCP averaged a dreadful 1.8. So we’ve already helped our ball movement tremendously by adding a guy who can shoot and be a primary ball handler when needed. And we still have some new blood coming at guard who we’ll have to see how they continue to help last years major problem Quote

Let me look here for you. OKC has us for sure. 2. SGA 20. Jalen Williams 27. Chet 63. Caruso We are ranked better than Indiana. We honestly play Indiana really well they can’t handle Paolo. I was at his 50 point game against them 7. Haliburton 23. Siakam 74. Nembhard 76. Turner We are pretty close to New York. 9. Brunson 18. kAT 40. OG 60. Bridges This is why the national media lumps us in with Indiana, New York, and Cleveland. Any of the four teams can win The East. Quote

Boston won with two all-star wings who served as the primary ball handlers. OKC is doing the same thing with SGA and JW. That is how the Magic are constructed. It hasn’t been said in a while, but Paulo himself needs to look in the mirror and continue to grow as a decision maker and player. The ball can’t stop in his hands, which it frequently does. Franz also needs to look in the mirror and fix that hitch. Lastly, when other guys get open looks from our stud wings, they’ve got to be able to make the open shots. This how the Magic are constructed, and our championship aspirations will come down to improvement in these areas. Quote

It's a bit risky considering his injury history and he was bad last year in Washington (hence why he might be gettable for the vet minimum) but he's got proven track record as an NBA PG who can shoot and play off of a star forward. CT do you have a good list of back up PGs for us? Just curious if you have some more ideas after the trade. Quote
