Great news on the extension. Centers, especially starters are rare in the NBA. Especially a center who is willing to take the back seat and do the dirty work. And he has a 3 point shot. 

Is the contract good for the Magic, we’ll see. I’d say his comparison is Zubac and Nurkic. Just from a role standpoint. We will get a better view when Zubac extends his contract or what he will get in a free market.

Centers are receiving bigger contracts then one would think. All these contracts are easily tradeable except WCJ because it's 5 years now.

And WCJ is more tradable now than he was before this contract in my opinion.

Going to expand on this slightly. It was basically impossible to trade Wendell for remotely fair value on his old contract. He literally makes not enough money. This season he makes less than $12m.

How many players who's pay is even in that realm (not including rookie scale contracts not likely to be traded) would you even want to trade Wendell for?

And for that same reason he couldn't be the key piece in a deal for a high paid player because you'd have to match considerable additional salary and we don't really have an expendable large salary to do that. 

So, now we've established Wendell literally wasn't a viable trade asset at his current salary. What other options do we have? By the time that original deal expires we'll be well over the cap so him leaving will free up no room to bring anyone in. Wed lose him for nothing.  

Our realistic options basically were extend him now or extend him later.

A trade is rarely one player for another player. You can add other players in the same trade. You can take back more salaries if you've cap space (we would, without extending and re-signing everyone)

Overall (that's not an answer to your post, just a random thought), I don't understand why we're always so happy about the money we extended our own guys. Yes, most of the contract are good ones and probably tradable ones in the future. But rarely our FO make trades, they only seem interested in continuity, so all that chat about our contract a lot of times became useless (see past seasons). Also, you don't win the league by having good guys on good contracts and a lot of depth. You win the ring with a great playoff 8 man rotation, with talent, and sometimes taking risks. And... as always, I hope FO is right and I'm terribly wrong.

I'm aware how trades work. 

No we wouldn't have cap space regardless. Presuming we extend Jalen Suggs (which seems very likely) basically from this point until this entire team is blown up and rebuilt (ending with Paolo/Franz/Suggs being traded for expiring contracts or retiring or taking considerable pay cuts) we'll likely never have meaningful cap space again.

I know and I'm sure of that :), but in your explanation you were considering trades for Wendell like the one to one player trade was the only option, as a reason why now is more tradable. I'wasn't really convinced about that reasoning.

And yes, I know we are out of cap space for the future being, but we're in that situation because we actually confirmed and re-signed every player in the (Magic) world. We had space in the past, and we always used it in the same way.
