Jon 36 Report post Posted July 2, 2024 4 hours ago, CTMagicUK said: I feel like if Gary Harris was named something else and had been on the bench in Sacramento and we gave him a bigger contract than this people would be acting like it's a good move. Sometimes different isn't better. No. It’s because we signed a better younger version of him in KCP and we really needed and still need playmaking, shot making and PnR abilities. It’s not sexy at all, but at least we didn’t hamstring ourselves with a horrible overpay for a guy that makes us marginally better (Hartenstein). FWIW, I would’ve given PG the 4 year max, but I understand why we didn’t. I’m not sure we didn’t offer PG that deal, there was probably a reason he had us set up 3rd in the meeting order and we bounced quickly. There is an argument to be made that Philly’s window is a bit more open than ours the next year or two. I think we also forget just how hard it is to get the perfect pieces for a shot at it all. A lot has to come together to even get one title: - Took Boston 7 years to get it right for Tatum and they had stints with Hayward and Kyrie that failed miserably. -Took Denver 8 years with Jokic. -Golden State needed 6 years to build around Curry.
MagicMan1979 155 Report post Posted July 2, 2024 19 minutes ago, CTMagicUK said: It's worth remembering this time last season people were talking about trading Suggs before his value got worse. People thought Markelle was our starting PG and questioned why we drafted AB because we had "too many guards". People thought Mo Wagner was an overpay. It's possible that someone (Jett, AB, Cole, TDS, Suggs again even) improves out of nowhere and gives us a lift in the playmaking department and makes us a better team. A lot can change for young guys between the end of one season and the start of another. This is far to rational a post. I will call my self out a little. I went to the opening game with my buddy. He said “would you trade Fultz for Brogdon?” And I said “no way Fultz is our third or fourth best player!” Haha The narrative changes season to season. Carter Jr looked like a cornerstone going into last year also. Now people want him traded.

Narrative could change and players should evolve, but it's also true the opposite: could get worst or stagnate if we don't improve enough compared with the rest of the league. We could have a bad break with injuries. Our defense was great, it's not a given it will be better, but could be worst. We seem so focused on depth... we were the only team playing a 10 man rotation in playoffs... what about finally adding quality?

With how he didn't show up in the playoffs outside of like 1 game, I don't know that I offer much. He can't play off-ball well, which is what we need as we'll want the ball in Paolo's hands, and he doesn't bring other things done exceptionally well to the table (defense, catch and shoot, great passes), so I just don't see this being a fit unless we really believe he's the #2 scorer we've been missing and a better option than Franz as the #2 option. You and others are right that we will need higher level talent to ultimately compete for a championship. My point is we don’t want the wrong players or overpay just because we had cap space. He fits skill wise and on paper. Before Mitchell got there he was awesome. He did break his jaw early in the year that made him lose weight and he didn’t seem like himself after the injury. I think they would ask for Suggs for him. They are trying to win now like Orlando. We could make that work with KCP next to Garland. But I love me some Suggs so I wouldn’t include him. JJZFL 703 Report post Posted July 2, 2024 7 hours ago, CTMagicUK said: Here's the thing, didn't Goga just get the room exception? 3 years/25 million is room exception money. It'll be interesting to see how we structure everything. For what it's worth I'm happy with bringing back both Goga and Gary. Gary as a bench shooter for 7 million dollars a season is unbelievably reasonable and also the kind of money you pay someone that you'd be ok not playing if a young player beats them out. The hate Gary gets on here is kind of unfair. We were very good with him in the starting lineup last season and now he's going to be a bench player with likely a quite small role. The knock against him has always been that he seems to relish finding reasons to be out with small injuries. That was the case in Denver and it has certainly been the case here. He is one of the few players who I think prefers being in street clothes to being in the lineup.
