Our best games are when Gordon is in the driver’s seat. A Gordon and DSJ swap would be disastrous.

Probably my favourite observation of the year is how good things go when he keeps getting the touches the ENTIRE game

Nilkola Vucevic...defensive stopper

Quote

When you boil it right down to its essence, what is the goal of an NBA team on defense?  It’s to prevent the opponent from scoring.  And the ways that a team can achieve that goal is by: rebounding an opponent’s errant shot, blocking an opponent’s shot attempt, stealing the ball from the opponent, or drawing an offensive foul from the opponent.  That is what The Hoops Manifesto’s NBA Stopper Rankings are all about – discovering which players in the league are best at ending an opponent’s offensive possession.
(Since big men have more opportunities to rack up many of the stats we are tracking, we’ve also including a Top Five Guard ranking)

It's really frustrating to me that I grew up during a time where Marcus Camby was typically a finalist for DPOY because he averaged steals blocks and defensive rebounds but all the really really smart basketball people complained that the old basketball people who vote on that stuff don't understand that he's not really making significant defensive impact at all. He goes for every block and steal and it leaves the defense vulnerable. He struggled in post defense. He was a fine defender but not elite.

People criticised Iverson's defense because although he led the league in steals he mostly got them by jumping passing lanes which left his man free for a back door cut. So he'd get 3 steals a game but allowed backdoor layups 4 times a game.

So we've gone from the smartest basketball minds saying "don't look at blocks, steals, and rebounds. Look at the context" to "look at this metric I've come up with. It distills blocks, steals, and rebounds into a single number. It tells you who the best defenders are."

This is a pretty dumb thing. Theoretically, what if a player grabbed every available defensive rebound but allowed opposing players to shoot 80% against him (with the other 20% being blocks for this unrealistic player).

Is this really one of the "smartest basketball minds" writing this though?

Plenty use similar metrics

Check out this game winner from Pascal Siakam.

How long until Gordon can do this a once or twice a game? Not even talking about it being a game winner.

How long until Gordon can make a layup off the dribble?  Probably not long considering he does that all the time.

Saw that game live, everyone commented how awkward it looked. Normally i see Aaron take it to the basket in transition, or off an assist.

I watch the games and see far too many plays he should be taking it to the basket. Seems to be indecisive, turnover prone when it's not in transition.

Are they purely using those metrics though, or do they try to contextualize them within the game?

These metrics line up decently well with our understanding of the abilities for some players. But you have Drummond 3rd here, when he has never been a good defender. Drummond always looks good on these though, especially as he grabs a lot of defensive rebounds.

Also: These are just total counting numbers. You play less minutes or get injured for a few games, and suddenly you drop off this list.
