lol again, why trade for him now with all these complicated scenarios when you can keep what you have to make moves for next offseason and woo him then. Ross and Vuc are off the books, and Mozgov and Fournier have one year left making them much easier to move. Butler doesn't guarantee us a playoff spot either.

Because you have a better chance now and the cost isn't great

Butler Will guarantee us a playoff run and if we trade for him now we will be in a better position to sign him next year.

Still think we should offer Fournier or Ross and Vuc for Butler and Dieng. Maybe we have to include a pick too. After that trade i would offer the Jazz Fournier or Ross, Augustine a if necessary a pick for Rubio and Sefolosha.

Starting five: Rubio/Butler/Isaac/Gordon/Bamba

Bench: Grant/Simmons/Sefolosha/Martin/Dieng

Coach: Clifford

With that groupe we would be one of the best defensive team in the league!

The problem is Butler leaves and we have no cap room to sign a replacement and you're not giving yourself the best chance to keep him by not having that max salary slot.

Fournier needs to be in a deal for Butler. You don't take back dieng unless your clearing the necessary big salaries to get that max spot.

Also I'm not comfortable going into the season with Bamba starting before we know he's actually ready. Especially a season where you're convincing Butler to stay.

All-Star Jimmy Butler has been granted permission to not participate in Minnesota Timberwolves‘ media day on Monday, league sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski.

The Timberwolves have also been made aware that Jimmy Butler will not be available for on-court activities at the outset of training camp, sources tell @TheAthleticMIN

Ok. Jones is a good defender.

Butler and Jones vs Augustin and Fournier is a significant improvement

If part of the deal about resigning him is he's pulling another free agent then you're fine and don't really need to concern yourself with money. You have (big money free agent)-Butler-Isaac-Gordon-Bamba.

Depending on additional free agent signings you can stay under the luxury tax from now through 2022 with relative ease even if you max out Isaac which might be premature to consider him a max guy but for the sake of argument let's do that.

2023 if you max Isaac and max Bamba you can't afford to resign Gordon but if you pay Isaac 20 million and Bamba 20 million you can pay Gordon 20 million and fill out your roster and you'll still be only in the 150 million total roster salary range. That sounds like a crazy amount but you should be looking at a 145ish million mark before the luxury tax starts.

2024 your big name free agent this summer comes off the books and Butler is an expiring contract so you can look to transition into a new roster construction around almost 27 year old Isaac and 26 year old Bamba

Long story short we'll definitely be under the tax for the 19-20 and 20-21 seasons. We'll have a choice on if we want to spend big in 21-22, we'll be over the tax 22-23 and we'll rebuild in 23-24 successfully avoiding the repeater tax for all years of Butler's deal.

Money isn't an issue when two of the main pieces are on rookie deals and you signed a third piece to a cap friendly decreasing contract.

You should be the Magic's capologist, seriously.   This is today's NBA.  You lure other big name FA's because your team is committed to winning.  That costs money and a big name All Star first.  Since Butler is now available, and no one thought he would be, you swing for the fences.  Since we have Isaac and Bamba on the rookie salary scale until 2023 now is the time to strike, at least, try.  If we can get Butler, how about Kemba Walker next summer?

I'm nowhere near good enough to do that. I just threw numbers into a spreadsheet.

Kemba, Kyrie, Terry Rozier at worst.

I think an offer of Fournier and Mozgov with 1 or 2 first round picks for Dieng and Butler should be more than enough. They will switch Dieng 2 years for Mozgov 1 year . They will get a young contract friendly start caliber player in Fournier and an additional 1 or 2 first rounders.

We will be in a position to likely sign another max player if we somehow trade simmons or Augustin in another deal.
