ShefGator2 77 Report post Posted May 24, 2017 I'm excited about the Weltman/Hammond pair. They're both experienced and well liked in the organisation's they've been a part of which might open up more trade opportunities. They've both played a part in drafting some interesting prospects and Weltman in particular has just come from working under one of the best execs in the sport. What I want this year is an identity. That's all I want. I don't expect playoffs or anything like that but if we show there's a culture developing and we play some good basketball along the way I'll be happy. I am too. This will be the first GM hire in Magic history (other than Pat Williams) where the GM has had previous GM experience. Couple that with Weltman's front office experience and we at least FINALLY have 2 guys now that are not going to be doing on the job training. That at least gives the team a better shot at turning this thing around. FACT: In the entire history of the Magic, the only players the Magic drafted that have been on an All-Star team are: Shaq, Penny and Dwight, with the exception of 1 selection of Jameer Nelson who missed it in 2009 due to shoulder injury. So, in a nutshell, other than 3 lucky ping-pong ball bounces that netted the #1 pick, this organization has NEVER drafted a player that became an All-Star in Orlando. That's a good indication of the level of failed leadership this ownership has hired to run the team. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/ORL/all_star.html
Ibn Battuta 127 Report post Posted May 25, 2017 Interesting stuff there ShefGator. I didn't even realize that about our all stars lol. It does show a complete failure on our end.

There's only been 192 players selected as all stars since this franchise has been functioning. How many all stars should we have drafted. 4 seems right. By the same criteria Miami only has 1. Atlanta has 2. Charlotte has 4. Dallas has 2. The vast majority of all stars happen with teams that didn't draft them.

Howard was preferred by most GMs too so Im not sure how much credit is due to our club for going with him. Penny or Webber both turned all stars....I guess my point is I judge a club based on how many guys they can draft and turn into all stars that arent top 3 picks which are inevitably easier to select. Going by that we dont have much in that department hence my dissatisfaction with our management. Great post though it is insightful.
Fultz4thewin 2,464 Report post Posted May 25, 2017 lets break this down more. since 1989, here are the players who were multiple time all stars with the team that drafted them outside of the top 3 picks. Kobe - lakers Garnett -minnesota Dirk -Dallas Wade- miami Bosh-toronto Ray Allen-milawaukee Not sure if Jason kidd counts but Dallas pierce - boston Chris Paul - new orleans Vince Carter-toronto Mutombo - denver kemp - seattle tony parker - SAN Amar'e - phoenix Westbrook - okc Tim Hardaway - golden state Vin Baker - milwaukee Curry - golden state George - indiana Love - minnesota Marion - phoenix Rondo - boston Sprewell - golden state jimmy butler- chicago Cousins - sacramento Derozan - toronto Francis - houston marc gasol - memphis eddie jones - Lakers Roy - portland Klay - Golden State Antoine walker - Boston Terrell Brandon - Cleveland luol deng - Chicago noah- chicago manu - SAS Draymond - GS peja- Sac Hibbert - Indiana ilgauskas - Cleveland Kawhi - SAS Lillard - Portland West - new orleans lakers 2 Minnesota 2 Dallas 2 Miami 1 Toronto 3 Milwaukee 2 Boston- 3 NOLA- 2 Denver 1 Seattle 1 or 2 if you want to lump in okc San Antonio 3 phoenix 2 Golden state 5 Chicago 3 Sac 2 Houston 1 Memphis 1 Portland 2 Cleveland 2 so 11 teams don't have a player on this list. It will be interesting to see the level of competency among active GM's instead of Teams. I believe our current GM and President of Operation have 2. That makes us a little more competent and above most of the other Teams. Surely an improvement!
Janders 102 Report post Posted May 25, 2017 Per Woj, as compensation for Weltman, we're sending Toronto the worse of our two 2nd round picks in 2018. (Whichever pick is worse between our own pick and the Lakers pick)

Ibn Battuta 127 Report post Posted May 25, 2017 Why the hell wouldnf he resign his position. There must be some clause in his Toronto contract that the team has to be compensated if he leaves to a rival.
Jay Magic 1,239 Report post Posted May 26, 2017 ``It was Jeff walking into my office and saying, `Hey, I think we should make a trip. We need to go over to Greece and see this player that is getting a lot of attention,’’’ Hammond told The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski in a January podcast. ``That was really the start of it. We went together, as a matter of fact, Jeff and I went together.’’ They went halfway around the world together to see the player who turned out to be Giannis Antetokounmpo,
Jay Magic 1,239 Report post Posted May 26, 2017 `I’ve always felt that Jeff has a very keen eye for talent. That’s obviously so important in what we do. He’s always been creative in his evaluating. I can tell you that from working with him, when he goes out and watches a player play – we never get them all right – but, boy, Jeff gets most of them right.’’ hammond
