Payton would be ok if he's surrounded by scorers. That's our problem. I like the Lin idea. Count me in! I agree that he brings some of what we're looking for- selfish, veteran, good locker room guy, shoots, and can play both guard positions. Hopefully we can make that happen.

I dont think there is 1 player that can come in and change much. So saying we need to replace EP is just trying to put blame on someone to feel better. We wont suddenly become contender by doing that.

If we had 4 starters that were better than Payton, we wouldnt even have this discussion. Our team would be pretty good. Problem is that he is arguably (in last part of the season) our best player and we expect him to be some sort of superstar. We just need to surround him with equally good/better players. Its not like he is the most paid player on our team.

We need to improve team overall, piece by piece, and EPs time to get replaced might come as well. We need to keep looking for opportunities to improve at all positions.

In some ways, Hayward is the easy part. The Jazz can pay him tens of millions more than anyone else, over the life of a maximum contract. The decision is out of the Jazz’s hands. If baked beans and Red Sox comp tickets matter that much to him, he’s gone. Far trickier is the matter of signing Hill. He too is looking for a maximum contract. Reports say in his first-ever foray into unrestricted free agency, Hill could sign for as much as four years, $132 million. This puts the Jazz in the tenuous position of paying Hill like a big star or trying to keep the costs reasonable so they can pay Hayward, and any others, without feeding the luxury tax monster.

Although Forbes magazine recently said Jazz owner Gail Miller is worth a tidy $1.2 billion, the team has often said it doesn’t intend to pay luxury tax. So the simple answer is for the Jazz to make Hill a strong offer, well above the $8 million he made last season, but not a ridiculous one. They reportedly tried to lock him up last winter at nearly three times his salary, but nothing happened. Some have speculated he can command over $30 million annually.

For those teams needing a point guard but didn't draft one in a pg rich draft, George Hill is available for $30M/year.

Everybody is going to be looking for big contracts but there's only like 150 million in free agent money out there projected unless teams cut salary.

And only a handful of teams will have a max contract to offer.

And Griffin, Paul, Hayward, Lowry, millsap, gallinari, holiday, and hill are out there.

Someone isn't going to get paid

Also. Among every team with cap space, only Orlando, Philly, Indiana, new York, and san Antonio are looking for point guards

With Jimmy Butler now on board, the Timberwolves’ next step is an upgrade at point guard, tweets Mitch Lawrence of The Sporting News.

Toronto’s Kyle Lowry tops Minnesota’s free agent wish list, according to Lawrence, followed by New Orleans’ Jrue Holiday, Indiana’s Jeff Teague and Utah’s George Hill.

Minnesota has about $20MM in remaining cap room, so more salary would have to be unloaded to offer a max deal. One way to do that, especially if a point guard is being targeted, is to find a taker for incumbent starter Ricky Rubio, who will make $14.25MM next season and $14.8MM in 2018/19.

The Wolves had discussions involving Rubio with the Knicks at last season’s deadline and the Mavericks more recently, but both teams just picked up new point guards in the draft.

Lowry is the most likely of the four to receive maximum money. Coming off three straight All-Star appearances, the 11-year veteran made $12MM with the Raptors this season. Although limited to 60 games by injuries, he averaged a career-high 22.4 points per game.

All four teams have Bird rights on their guards, so they will have the competitive advantage of being able to offer more money and one more season than Minnesota can.

Looks like Minny is looking for an upgrade too.
