Air Gordon Posted November 14, 2015 Report Posted November 14, 2015 It's also interesting that there's a presumption that we need a good shooting guard to play next to Payton rather than a competent point guard to play next to Oladipo. I mean, I'm not suggesting we need to make any changes with this team given the youth and expectations for this team. But point guards who can score 14 ppg, get 6 assists, and make 2ish threes per game grow on trees and Payton has been pretty bad. I'm a huge Elfrid fan and bought his jersey last year at a game, and I'm really hoping the first 10 games of this year are just him struggling to get back in to a groove after the preseason injury and not a sign of regression. He's been hard to watch for most of this year and I'd agree that at the moment, even though obviously nothing imminent needs to happen because we're all so young, that Victor is the keeper of the two. At the same time, it's hard to complain when we're 5 - 5, and really two unlucky plays away from sitting at 7 - 3 right now. Quote

He also tries to play hero ball at times. But his ineptness to make a dam layup is EXTREMELY frustrating to watch! And it has not improved at all in over 2 years. I believe in Payton and think he is just trying too hard to impress. Also a new offense and missing most of the preseason has him behind in his progression. Quote

It's really not something we even need to concern ourselves with until next season. I'm just a little perplexed that the panic is so one sided right now. Quote

His defensive numbers are elite right now and his rebounding numbers at the position are elite right now. His shot isn't falling consistently but it's not broken, and if he ever gets respect from the officials he'll be a 20 a night scorer. 20 - 5 - 5 isn't out of the question for him really soon and you could accompany that with being among the league leaders in steals. Maybe not superstar potential (but maybe he could get there) but I definitely see all star potential. Quote

Needed someone on the perimeter like Oladipo tonight. Quote

Air Gordon Posted November 15, 2015 Report Posted November 15, 2015 yes, I agree. I love his defense. Layups not so much. No hate, just my observations. He tries to rely on athleticism around the basket instead of strength and attacking. He attempts to snake around them, making the shot near the rim much more difficult on himself as well as not putting himself in a great position to get a foul called on the defender. He's been working on it and is much better than he was earlier in his career, but it stills shows through quite a bit. You can tell the guy has relied on just being more athletic than everyone else his entire career. Needs to play with more strength and less finesse, but you can already tell that Skiles is getting through to him loud and clear. Quote
Catman Posted November 15, 2015 Report Posted November 15, 2015 I think the Magic should continue to go PG by committee. For the most part, it is working except CJ has been hurt. Interested in how we do later in the year against WAS. Games have been very close, and WAS wins with experience right now. Quote
flgatorsandmagic Posted November 27, 2015 Report Posted November 27, 2015 I don't see Frye starting over Oladipo. lol 4 Quote
