The OFFICIALish Training Camp Thread.

If a player looks like a SG, plays like a SG, has the skill set of a SG and actually spent 3 years playing college basketball at SG why wouldn't I assume that his best NBA position would be SG?

I think it's probably in everyone's best interest to see if he can develop as a combo guard. It would give him more minutes and let us play more interesting and versatile lineups.

His point guard skills are already much further along than I was expecting. I'm not ready to write him off as a pg yet.

I agree with Lewis aka Hibachi. Its definitely in everyone's best interest if Victor Olapido could develop in all around game at his size in position. A combination of point guard and shooting guard skills is ideal. It just depends how Victor will set his ceiling.

Yeah, I just don't think his sg ceiling is as high as his combo guard ceiling. As a sg he could be good. As a combo guard he could be special.

It's really a win-win(-win?) situation. If he develops and plays the position enough to take over as our starting PG, awesome, and we can pick up another position in the draft after this season. If he bombs, we can move him back to SG and draft a PG (plus a better drafting position?). If he falls somewhere in the middle, we can still draft a PG, and we've spent a year developing his skills that will still help him succeed in the league.

Yup. I think your last option is most likely.

I think today's nba is about lineup versatility. Having guys who can switch screens and defend multiple positions is ideal. Being able to play big lineups with VO-harkless-Harris- ?-Vuc or athletic lineups with VO-afflalo-harkless-Harris- Vuc or small lineups with ?-VO-harkless-Harris-Vuc

That's going to be how our team is dangerous. Matchup creativity.

I feel that this is the "new" NBA. Its not about knowing only your position. Its not all about your size at that position either. Its all about versatility in all facets of the surface.

The NBA's standards are are the five base positions. However, the new NBA has moved from the classic half court team to small versatile lineups. Right now, the NBA's best player is a team in himself having damn near mastered every position. He too has limitations but he doesn't let those limitations stop him. Health, plays a huge role in this and with an NBA contract, there's no excuse other than poor genetics. Its useful to integrate all various skill-sets. I could see Oladipo play small forward when it comes to really really small ball but I doubt that ever happens with the logjam there.

I could see that too if the matchup dictated it.

Not for nothing, but Lebron isn't the first guy to be able to play all 5 positions, or even the first to be able to play all five positions at an all-star level.

Come on. I wouldn't disrespect Mr Earvin. Hell, even Scottie could defend those positions but I don't know if he could play all of them. I think he would utilize the skill sets at the least. However, this totally disregarding players who haven't played in the NBA. Point being is that James will go down as the best in that category without a doubt.
