ShefGator2 Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 SI.com reports that the NBA has proposed a "franchise tag", a designation that would potentially increase the incentive for star players to remain with their current team rather than bolt in free agency. A team would be allowed to designate one player for preferential contractual treatment, including more overall money, more guaranteed money and at least one extra year on his contract. A player would have to agree to such a designation. It is designed to work as an incentive to get a player to remain with his team rather than as a roadblock to free agency, the sources said. The idea behind the league’s new proposal would be to increase the gap between what teams can offer a “designated player” and what non-designated players can get on the open market. http://eye-on-basketball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/29226354 Quote
Marc Acres 3:16 Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Well, that does next to nothing to help us. Great. Quote
OrlandoNKentucky Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 That would help out but I don't know if the promise of more money would really help the Magic in their situation. I think most players would probably turn it down because "they want to get a ring" but really they just want to surround themselves with the best players possible Quote
ShefGator2 Posted May 11, 2011 Author Report Posted May 11, 2011 Well, that does next to nothing to help us. Great. Yeah, if the terms are what is reported in this article, it looks pretty weak. Nothing like the NFL version which basically locks the player in, whether he likes it or not. Quote
Jareth Cutestory Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Why can't Dwight be a greedy scumbag? Quote
NickAnderson Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Well, that does next to nothing to help us. Great. Really? 40 Mill more for Dwight isn't gonna help? Quote
Marc Acres 3:16 Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Really? 40 Mill more for Dwight isn't gonna help? It is a lot of money but we just watched players leave money on the table last offseason in an effort to win. I dunno. I think our best hope is that the league allows every team to get rid of at least 1 bad contract. The second that is inked I would put on my steel toed boots and punt Gilbert somewhere into the middle of the Atlantic. Quote
Captain Hindsight Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 The franchise tag is so great that the NFL is probably going to abandon it when they agree to a new CBA. Quote

Man, the more you look at that deal, you more you have to think Otis knows something we don't about the new CBA. The optimist in me thinks he picked Gilbert not only for the connection, but because he has the worst contract and due to his deteriorating abilities, would be easy to let go of. Quote
Miller4Prez66 Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 My proposal for a franchise tag in the NBA is to only allow a team to use it once on a player and then pay that player "franchise" like money (15-20 million or so I guess). I think it can help out everyone involved. This way a team can't constantly slap the franchise tag on a player year after year and lock them into a cage, and a star can't just bolt easily. It would also keep teams from franchising role players they want to keep, because nobody is going to want to pay a role player the kind of money the tag would make them, even if it is for one year. You'd also be allowed to trade a player you just tagged which would help prevent teams like Cleveland from losing their stars for nothing. If they had franchised LeBron and he showed disgust and said I want go to Miami, they could work soemthing out that way. Quote
NickAnderson Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Those guys lost roughly 20mil Dwight would lose around 40 mill. Who knows tho. Quote
