NFL's 18-Game Regular Season Extention

Just wanted to create an open forum to discuss the current situation between players and management in the NFL. The NFL is looking to extend the regular season from 16 games to 18 games. The basis of player discontent include injury concerns and additional pay involving the extension. The NFL states that their move to an 18 game season is for the benefit of the fans.

I'm not a football fan, but I know how people love the sport and an extra 2 games do help fans, NFL and NFL teams. It doesn't benefit the players much, but hey...don't they get paid millions?

They play 4 preseason games, where I've seen numerous stars get injured too.

It would be awful to extend the regular season. Every season record will be broken in the next three years. They better have an * next to them. Think about it, it's an amazing feat to get 2,000yds rushing in an NFL season. In an 18 game season 2,000yds will be "meh".

The thing I have a problem with is playing regular season games at a random international venues - and this is coming from someone who potentially benefits from such things, being a non-American. It especially bugs me how they arbitrarily award one team 'home' status.

 

I have been to exhibition games where travelling teams are involved and I get that the intensity isn't there, but I think it is incredibly unfair to the real home fans, particularly those who have season tickets, as they really miss out. A perfect example is the 49ers (who are my NFL team of choice) as their season ticket prices stayed the same for the coming season even though one of their 'home' games will be in London, England, AND it is against the Broncos when a home advantage would be a great help.

I'm not a huge fan of those international games either. I can understand it from the league's point of view though. It can only help in gaining more international fans.

It's fine the way it is. I'm sure I would've been against moving it from 14 to 16 games too if I was around.

Careers are going to be shortened and we might as well line the hearses up. Unless they cut the preseason, this is horrible and even if they do, it will still make key players have to play more.

 

I love football, but I don't want to players getting more destroyed than they already are. Maybe another solution/consideration would be to increase roster sizes.

The staleness in which the NFL treats their players and ex-players is mind-boggling. They could have learned from their issues with medical care to severely injured retirees.

 

My take is that player safety should come first...I have no problem waiting for that Sunday every week if they happen to keep the 16 game schedule.
