Sometimes I really wonder if many that are so high on Matt Barnes think he is really as good as they say or are they simply hopeing he pans out because that would mean both Pietrus and Vince would spend the vast majority of their minutes at the SG and little need for them to slide over and play SF any. This would in turn provide less mins. for JJ. I mean REALLY look at his NBA background.

Since entering the NBA 7 seasons ago, he has already played on 6 teams. He definitely fits the bill of a journeyman. Of these 7 seasons that he has played the teams that he played on have made the playoffs only one season. If he will be such a valuble player for the magic why was he not kept by any of these other 6 teams that basically sucked over the coarse of his short but well traveled career. Matt Barnes supporters please explain why he is so good and please don't turn this into a just because Redick sucks thread.

you know what sets ordinary and extraordinary apart? that little extra...championship caliber teams typically have a strong rotation of "role players", Matt will be a role player for energy, grit, versatility, floor spacing and some rebounding bottom line, he might not be "good" but I would much rather have a Barnes over say Wafer of even Dahnty Jones...This thread has strong JJ>Barnes undertones BTW, so strap in...

He's a combo forward who can defend adequately at 3 positions, shoots decently and plays hard and tough.

And there isn't a person on this board with 2 braincells to rub together who will believe that this thread wasn't meant to make JJ look better. If I could even bring myself to care about Redick even at all, I'd throw up an "Obvious troll is obvious", but frankly, you're not worth the effort of even a google search.

One thing is forget how many teams hes played on just look at what he did last season. Averaged 10ppg 5rpg 3apg. Plays good defense and just hustles on every play. Not afraid to make hard fouls at times. Just brings toughness as well to this team. Shoots the 3 good and has good passing skills. What more could you want out of a role player like Barnes. Actually i feel like teams are stupid to give this guy up. Hes a steal. He can either start at the 3 or he could even be our 6th man off the bench. This was a good pickup.

Also, you can forget about Redick. He will not make the rotation with Carter, Pietrus and Barnes ahead of him. And Lewis will be taking some minutes at the 3 so all the SG and SF minutes will be gone. Hopefully Redick can get traded to help a team that really could use him. We dont really need him here and i think that we never shouldve drafted him. We wasted his career. Maybe some other team couldve gave him a better opportunity than what we offered him.

I didn't watch him last season, but from the games I've seen in GS he's a solid role player. I questioned how he would play outside of Oakland or away from Baron but he put up similar numbers in Phoenix. Could it be because of Nash, style, starting, trading Diaw and Bell? IDK.

I believe he is a solid role player, but he is worse(slightly) than and more or less a duplicate of MP. If MP had a tough time sniffing the rotation at times, I dont understand others' expectations of him here on this board. He certainly has a bloated view from many here. Also, another thing that gets me is peoples' assessment of his defensive ability. If you go to the phx or gs boards, you would find unanimous talk about while he certainly plays with energy, he is HOWEVER a below average defender otherwise. Sure he hustles, and I like that...but given that his defense isnt what some think it is here, if he ever goes cold from the 3 point line, he will likely get stuck at the end of the bench. He isnt an awesome shooter as it is. I like him as a backup to MP, a backup himself...but I am also a more grounded thinker...I am not one of those that ever expected him to start. If he does, then our starting 5 is worse than last year, even with VC aboard.

And to address the JJ situation, a glut at sf doesnt preclude redick from the lineup necessarily. The way I see it(take it for what its worth) Redick's biggest competition is Ryan Anderson. If Ryno proves his worth to SVG, then he will be the #1 backup at SF(assuming shard is playing the 3) which would push MP back in the depth chart essentially putting him in as VC's full time backup. As it stands now, I believe Ryno wont get much of a 'chance' until next season to prove his worth. We will see though, SVG certainly grew as a coach last season-maybe his predicable behaviors will be different. Going back to Redick, If Ryno doesnt get a lot of burn, then MP will be entrenched at the backup SF spot bc I see Shard sliding to the 4 for spells(obviously). VC is in his 30's and needs a backup, combine that with our need for a backup distributor since AJ SHOULD be an insurance policy at best and I see pt for Redick. It may not be enough for some peoples' liking around here, but I think he has earned pt under SVG...call me crazy, I know some will...

Barnes is a really decent player. He reminds me of a mini Matrix (maybe that was just his role), but the guy does a little bit of everything and he does it pretty efficiently. I mean he hits 3s, blocks, steals, and is very active all round

Hey you can say what you want about Barnes but SVG thinks highly of him. And hes an more all around player than Redick and Anderson is. Which I dont see either Redick or Anderson making the final rotation anyways. I pick Pietrus to start at the 3 and Barnes to back him up but it could go either way. Also Lewis will get minutes at the 3 as well so the chances of Anderson playing at the 3 is slim to none. So the real battle will be between Anderson and Bass for the backup PF minutes. Redick has absolutely no chance to play this season. He needs to be traded in the Raymond Felton deal if it goes down.

I think Barnes will be as good as C. Lee was on our team last year. Meaning Barnes wont be as good as C. Lee's future...but Barnes will bring to our team exactly whay Lee brought to us last year. Around 10 points a game, a good 3 point shooter, and good hard nose D. Since Barnes is 6-7 I think he will be better then C. Lee of last year. A C. Lee that got us to the finals.

Again understand what I am saying... C. Lee will be much better the Barnes on day. I am just comparing Barnes to last years C. Lee. Barnes is hoping to prove himself, so his hard work pays off, and maybe gets close to the midlevel from a team in 2010. Barnes wants to pull a Posey. Which is fine by me...if he can get us a Ring.
