Well we all knew this was going to happen...

The Year Jameer had to PROVE himself.

Here's what Denton and Schmitz have to write about it...

To the many doubters who question whether or not Jameer Nelson can ever lift Orlando to championship-contender status, the Magic's management clearly does not share your concern.

#Magic general manager Otis Smith believed in the (barely) 6-foot Nelson enough to award him with a five-year, $35 million contract extension last summer. Nelson, Orlando's most vocal leader on and off the floor, then went out and justified that contract by becoming the Magic's most clutch performer in last spring's playoff run.

# The Magic were so impressed by Nelson's growth that they were willing to let reserve point guards Keyon Dooling and Carlos Arroyo walk in free agency, meaning Nelson will have more minutes and responsibility on shoulders that are tattooed with the words, "ALL EYES ON ME." Nelson's safety net is gone, the leadership of the team belongs to him more than at any point in his four-year NBA career.

"From the all-star break on last year he was tremendous," Van Gundy said. "What it comes down to is maintaining his energy level and attacking all of the time. When he does that he's just a really good point guard."

"Coming out of college, I was a 20-point scorer and college player of the year and all that jazz," he said. "But coming into the NBA -- and most young guys don't understand -- there are very few young guys who are going to come in and be 'the guy.' So you have to adjust. You have to be able to realize that you have to play your role.

"I think on this team my role is to attack when I get the ball, attack on defense and play with a lot of energy."

As for his critics, he says, "I don't worry about what people say. I know when I mess up. I'm definitely harder on myself."

The Magic believe the breakthrough for him came even before the club's postseason run into the second round.

I will reply with a quote from myself in another message.

"Jameer, has two standards to achieve, those that the fans and the organization expect of him and those that he expects of himself. I think the problem is the latter which may end up leaving him frustrated at the end. Now, the pressure placed upon him by two experienced quality backups is gone but if Stan has to resort to use the Turk and Lee for strategic purposes, he is not going to be happy about this. Will he become a consitent good PG instead of a Yo-Yo one with excellent days alternated with mediocre ones? Let the season tell us."

Was the post so great in the last thread that it deserved to end up in this one as well? I'm going to assume that Jameer understands he will need a break during games. Why would he have a problem with Turk and Lee running the show while he is on the bench?

I also would like to know what player wouldn't be frusterated if they failed to meet their goals. Personally, I wouldn't want a player on the team that is fine with the status quo.

with comments like that jareth, its a wonder how you got such a high post count in so little time...you just bring so much to these boards with your insightful comments!

im over the microscope-on-jameer thing. he isnt the only player on our team with a questionable salary. and, he played well in the playoffs, so i am inclined to give him a break for the time being. besides, its not his fault...its otis' for 'betting against himself' in regards to extending jameer when he didnt have to. otis is something else, quite the contrarian he is...

Does Jareth's post count put a dark cloud over your otherwise sunny day? I hate it when that happens.
