The Orlando Magic currently have the 10th best odds to make the playoffs next year and the highest projected payroll in the NBA.
They don’t control their first round pick until 2031 and have 4 players on a 150+ million dollar contract
this doesn’t read well at all
The first round pick part is confusing, I think they’re going for we can’t trade a 1st until that far out. We literally have our own first next year, we just can’t move it because of the Stepien rule
-
What a bummer of an offseason. Feels like the entire Eastern conference made moves to improve and we just sat it out entirely. Hard to imagine we’ll be anything more than a low playoff seed and first round exit again.
Only hope is significant internal improvement from our core guys, and even then we did nothing to improve our bench, which was our weakest part to begin with. Cain and Vuc are good stories, but cmon. AB I’m not sure which streaky version of him is the real one. Banking on big leaps from Jase and Penda I guess, but man, I can’t believe how little we actually did to improve the roster.

AB on Jeff signing with Dallas:
"dat boy free"
Damn, this team really didn't rock with Mosley at all.

Meh, Jett is an unathletic shooter who can’t shoot consistently. I get that the guys with him in the locker room for years probably liked him, but Jett was a failure of Weltman, not Mosley. Had no business getting drafted where he got picked. He’ll be out of the league in the next couple years.

Jett is yet another piece of evidence that Jeff Weltman is bad at his job and shouldn’t be here. Franz is the only reason sniffles is hanging on for dear life

Besides Penda who was 5-10. They shot 5-30 from 3. Solid!!
We call that Weltball

Good to see the summer league team got the awful offense and blow second half leads memo. Penda looked good, Jase was solid, bummer to hype up Reddish just to DNP him

A really nice and important part of the interview is that Franz is confirming that he won’t play german national team this summer!! Yes!!!
But also he says he’s recovering from the injury as well.
That’s absolutely bonkers to me that we misdiagnosed his initial injury this bad. The injury looked awful when it happened, wondering if our med staff missed something. We’re pushing 8 months. It’s damn near an ACL tear recovery time for an ankle sprain. I’m concerned about this going forward if it’s truly still hampering him.

I don’t think Derozan helps us that much. He’s another negative floor spacer and a weak defender, and he’s older. I’m out. Not like we’d do it anyway, he’s almost certainly gonna wind up in one of the ring chasing spots like Miami, Philly, SA

Alright just looking, at this point I actually don't think there's anybody out there still who's actually worth the TPMLE (just ignoring everyone who I'm confident is getting more than the TPMLE)
So if we don't trade Goga for an actual clear roster upgrade I'm happy holding him until the deadline at this rate.
Yeah, last spot is prob a minimum for one of the guys on the summer roster, my guess is either Reddish or Keon Johnson. One of Vooch or Goga is gonna have to be out of the rotation, or maybe the backup 5 every game is fully matchup dependent.

F that list. Pure Fugazzi
We’re running it back with an 8 seed that barely survived the play-in. Our big ticket signing was a minimum backup Center who’s 36 years old. Knicks just won the title, Heat just added Giannis, Pacers getting back Haliburton, Sixers added Brown, Raptors added Kawhi. I don’t agree with how high the Celtics are on this list, but the rest of it is hard to argue imo.

Can we start a Fire Weltman thread already. Even though I called for it two years ago.
There already is one of those lol. We can definitely revive it. The main issue isn’t even this off-season, it’s every bad move he’s made leading up to us being in a position where we’re stuck. We had Paolo and Franz and knew they were both all-star caliber players on rookie deals at the same time, and Suggs was on a rookie deal too!
We could’ve been aggressive then, but for whatever reason we waited to make our big swing trade for Bane after we had to pay all those guys. Now we’re completely stuck with a core that we don’t even know is good or not and the only avenue we have for improving is internal development, which we’ve sucked at for the past 15 years.

I'm begging Lebron and Rich Paul to not be such attention seeking weirdos and get on with it. This Rich Paul podcast stuff is actually embarrassing.
Gotta assume their plan is to derail the holiday tomorrow while they know everyone will be glued to their phones waiting. I’m sure Bron already knows where he’s going.

Gotta love that Welt messed up the past 2 free agencies so bad that he figured his safest option in this one was just essentially sitting it out. Freaking clown. He was and remains to be a bigger problem than Mose, I’ll die on that hill

Simons to Philly. 2 year 12.3 million. Something we could’ve done if we stretched Isaac or traded Goga. Great work, Jeff

Now that we’ve added Vooch and drafted Nelson, I think it’d be wise to at least trade Goga for a 1st and cap room. Given some of these trades, surely we could get that return, right?
We still have a roster spot open since we 2-way contracted Nelson, but to add anybody meaningful we’d need to salary dump Goga.

Also that’s an awful return for Boston. What in the world? Makes the Bane trade look like a massive overpay.
Yeah, I don’t get it. It feels like negligence by our FO more than incompetence. Maybe I’m wrong, but I get the vibe that Weltman and co are just lazy and it’s hidden behind “patience”
-
This team is way too heavy in the frontcourt and way too weak in the backcourt. I’d say there’s no way we’re done, but I feel like we are. Goga trade for salary dump and sign Simons or Goga trade for a backup guard needs to happen
-
My fear is we bring JI in on the minimum and call it done. I like the Vucevic and Carter signings in a vacuum, but we need one more bench move for someone better. I still want Simons. Won’t give up hope until I see him on the squad

Sexton to the Lakers, 2 years $19 million

The Full MLE? Not happening.
We'd be right around the tax line if we made those moves, even if we were just under it using any of the full MLE would cap us at the first apron which we'd be 9 million short of. Add in Jevon Carter (who's not in the numbers I'm looking at but you could theoretically sign afterwards to make this work) and you'd only have 6.5 mil ish below the first apron anyway which is not measurably different to using the TPMLE.
Is this the moratorium or are these deals official and hitting the books right away?
-
Also, Vuc means coming in means one of Goga or Wendell has to be on the move
-
1 year $3.9 mill for Vuc to come home and finish his career in blue and white. I don’t hate it, but we still need backcourt help
-
John Collins to Detroit, 3 year $51 million
Marcus Smart to Houston, 2 year $13 million
-
I’m super annoyed that we’re so silent, but I guess this is just how ol Jeffy boy responds to his last big FA pickups being disasters in Tyus and Caldwell-Nope the last couple years. The issue isn’t even Weltman, it’s the management that keeps his garbage ass employed.
