Goga is definitely playing like he belongs in the league.

They really started working hard on the matchup zone. They gave up some shots in the paint closing out to contest the three, but they even clamped down on that at the end. Defense really won the game.

    2022-2023 Season Thread

So, in considering this, I came up with something like this as a starting point for a Jaylen Brown trade. It brings the Celtics back under the luxury tax cap for next year, without tying them up with long-term contracts, gives them additional building blocks on cheap contracts for the next few years, and Cole could grow working next to Tatum, Smart et al., G Harris provides some backup at SG off the bench, and this deal cuts the C's salary by about $6M (after signing the 1st round pick, and picking up next years options on Cole and G Harris), and potentially provides additional cap space if G Harris comes off in 2024. Magic get: Jaylen Brown Celtics get: Cole Anthony, Gary Harris, 2023 -1st round pick (Orlando if not top-4 or Chicago), 2024 - 1st round pick (top 3 protected), 2025 - 1st round pick (Orlando top-3 protected, or Denver)

Top pick, nope. If we got #2, then I would have to consider a deal depending on who/what else was included. I don’t think you let Wembanyama go.

I’m watching FAU vs. Kansas State and I am really impressed with Markquis Nowell. I’m not sure if he will be in the draft, but I would give him a long look at 35.

Yes, yes it is. I want a similar player to him as a backup PG, though the Cole/Suggs duo is beginning to grow on me, especially if we can keep Cole from playing hero-ball all the time.

Muggsey Bogues and Spud Webb say hi! Not likely he could make it in today’s NBA at 5’7”, but not 100% impossible.

You are probably looking at Ausar Thompson, Walker, Whitmore, George, Wallace, Smith, or Black in that range based on Tankathon/ESPN rankings, and quite frankly, it's really hard to rank them because of the range of competition, injury history (Smith), and limits on national coverage. This always seems to be the toughest part of the draft to make the right choice. You can pick the obvious, media-supported choice; you can go against the grain; and either way you can look like an idiot a year later (or a genius!). If we just go with the current rankings, we would be picking #5 and #9 (Bulls). I am very leery about the Thompson twins, I have some doubts about Smith, and Black's shooting (or lack thereof) worries me as well. I think if we can come out of this draft with Wallace, and one of Walker, Whitmore, Dick, or Hendriks I would be very happy. Wallace reminds me a bit of Suggs with better 3pt shooting, maybe a little less helter-skelter. I like him as a backup PG slot. I wish there was a decent backup C, but I don't believe in reaching for need, so I think we have to go with whomever the F.O. and scouting thinks are the BPA at our slots. I think Dick has the best shooting of the bunch.

He wouldn't be the first to get first round buzz, come out, and then slip into the early 2nd. I would hope not for his sake, but might hope so for ours. He's been on my radar, but as you said, if he doesn't get the buzz, he'll probably go back.

Cason Wallace is growing on me, so if we don’t get Scoot, maybe we grab him with the Bulls pick.

I’ve seen projections for him in the early 2nd round, so maybe with 35?!?

    2022-2023 Draft Thread

There aren't a lot of (projected) first round picks left playing. You have Miller and Clowney from Alabama, Walker and Sasser(bubble) from Houston, Smith and Black from Arkansas, Jones from Xavier, and Hawkins from UConn. That's about it for your (projected) top 30. I mean you have 3-4 international guys, the Thompson twins, and a couple of G-League guys, so only 22-24 NCAA guys could have been in the tournament to start, and they didn't all make it in, but realistically you are now down to only 7-8 left in the tournament. You have one or two others left in the NIT/NCAA who are on the 1st/2nd round bubble. Not really an auspicious tournament season for the draft guys so far.

Using it and being wrong does cost you a timeout, so I can see why you might not.

Scoot played in the G League; I think you are confusing him with the Thompson Twins who play with Overtime Elite, whose competition is frequently anything but elite.

Magic at Spurs - Tues., Mar. 14th @ 8:00 PM

I agree that Vuc isn't the type of backup C we need (rebounding/defensive specialist). I also agree that he always seemed like a pretty good person; but my favorite point is it really would be the ultimate capper to that trade!!! LOL! The scary thing is that the exact type of backup C we need, is actually Dwight Howard! Too bad he's such a head case!

Magic vs Heat - Sat., Mar. 11th @ 7 pm

It makes me crazy how much bs Miami gets away with on the defensive end, and yet the refs call ticky tack fouls on the Magic.

Magic vs Jazz - Thurs., Mar. 9th @ 7 pm

I agree we should be giving Goga some more minutes, and possibly even with trying him as a starter while WCJ is out, though I have to say Goga/Bol in together made for some pretty tough interior D. I think when WCJ is back though, you look at continuing to use Goga at backup, and use Moe more at the PF backing up Banchero. I think playing the last few minutes with Banchero being your de facto center was a HUGE mistake on the part of the coaching staff. If nothing else, you do your offensive/defensive lineup switching if you have to. Going small at the end when you've had problems containing Kessler all night was just plain dumb.

    2022-2023 Season Thread

Part of the reason I have been against both the play-in and the first round going to 7 games instead of best-of-5; sure it is only 2-3 games, but they have just kept adding games, and they all add up. The "solution" has been to shorten both training camp and pre-season in favor of the additional games that have meaning. The problem with that is that so many guys use training camp and pre-season to get in "game shape" for the season. When you shorten those and rush the process, guys get injured.

Gradey may not have the lateral speed, and the chase guys around screens ability to classify him as a SG, so we look at him as more of a SF.
  24. jmmagicfan

    2022-2023 Draft Thread

I think when it comes to guys that play either SG or SF, a lot of it comes down to the defensive end. If a guy has the size to step outside and contest, but lacks some speed to keep people out of the paint, or chase them around multiple screens they usually get classified as a SF. If they have the speed, but may lack a little height to contest outside, they usually get classed as a SG. That's a little simplistic, but about the best I can come up with. The Thompson twins have the size of your "average" SF, the speed of your average SG, and (Amen anyway) the vision of a PG. The problem with both of them seems to be their outside shooting isn't ideal for a true wing at the moment, so it's hard to classify their positions.
