    Hollinger Praise For Magic Defense

    Ferocious!
  2. Pre-injury, he was averaging 16 and 7 with a PER right around 17. My how quickly things can change. For the record, I'd be okay with Collison as long as we shed some weight.
  3. I tend to agree with you, rtillaree. That's a lot of jack for a player with questionable health. Yet looking at LA and Boston, I still think we're a tough PF away from really competing in a 7 game series. The JJ and Fran mis-picks (if I can make up a word) are the difference between those two top teams and us right now.
  4. Let me turn this discussion a hair. Is Kristic worth that kind of money and should Otis have taken a chance on him? Before his injury a while back, he was considered an up and coming big.... I even recall some in the media saying he would become an all-star. Thoughts?

    Ronny Turiaf

This should be our trade target. Read up on him from Hollinger: 2007-08 season: Turiaf continues to be one of the league's most underrated players, and he made progress in several phases of his game in 2007-08. Most notably, he showcased a face-up game from 15 to 17 feet. Turiaf made 43.0 percent of his long 2-pointers while taking over a quarter of his shots from that distance; he also shot 75 percent from the line. Turiaf also cut a mammoth foul rate to something a bit more reasonable last year, which was a good sign if he ever wants to start someday. He's still at the high end of the scale with a personal every six minutes, but now at least his coaches can count on him sticking around for at least 20 minutes before fouling out. The downside to his season was a lower shooting percentage and a worse rebound rate. Though Turiaf plays with great energy he has never rebounded well, and his rate last year was below average even for a power forward, let alone for a center. But all told it was another PER above 15 for Turiaf, ranking him in the upper half of frontcourt players. Scouting report: Turiaf plays with tremendous energy at both ends, with his exuberance making him a natural for an energizer role off the bench. Though his hyperactivity often causes him to take bad fouls, he has great timing on blocks and sent back a shot every 15 minutes last year. Additionally he runs the floor well and earns himself easy baskets with his motion. Offensively, he's far more skilled than people realize. He can hit a 17-footer and had the eighth-best assist ratio among power forwards last season, plus he draws a high rate of free throws with all his action around the basket. He's a 50.4 percent career shooter with a 40-minute scoring rate in the mid-teens, and at 25 is still improving. 2008-09 outlook: Turiaf signed a four-year, $17 million deal with Golden State as a restricted free agent that the Lakers declined to match. It was a great value signing by the Warriors, as Turiaf has been one of the league's most productive backup centers the past two years. He's also a nice fit in Golden State's high-octane running game, and for 15 to 20 minutes a night behind Andris Biedrins he'll give the Warriors one of the game's best backup centers. THE TRADE: REDICK AND COOK FOR TURIAF ... They get shooters and clear some cap room while we get our defensive PF. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?playe...ams=9~9~19&te=&cash=

Thanks for the response, rtillaree. So often your posts drip with sarcasm that it is hard to understand what you actually believe. Given my knowledge of Otis, some from inside the Magic family, there is a big difference between Otis not bringing in cheaper talent versus him bringing in what he deems is the right talent. The guy isn't afraid to spend money or make trades ... on players that he deems are right (see Lewis, Battie, Nelson, Pietrus, Evans and Cook). To the national audience, all of those moves/signings were excessive. In regard to Turiaf, I don't have inside information. BUT, imo, he looks like one of these "right" players: veteran, post-season experience, high character, hustler, and position of need. Probably nothing will happen but we'll see.

rtillaree, you're a riot. On this one thread, you compare getting Haslem to getting a top-10 pick AND mock the idea that Ronny could be a Haslem-type player. Which is it? What kind of player is Haslem to you? From what I've seen, Haslem is young and was stuck behind some great bigs in LA: Gasol, Odom, and Bynum. His numbers in his young career are very comparable to those of Haslem, except that he is a much better defender/shot blocker while Haslem is a slightly better rebounder.

Why would they do it? Simple, to save money (8+ million). As constructed, GS is going nowhere. Ronny is in the beginning of a new 4 year deal. JJ and Brian have this year and next on their contracts. And to those that say that Ronny is a key to their rotation, that is an overstatement. He averages 16 mpg. Yes, he plays good defense while the rest of the team plays none. But that is precisely why he is a bad fit for their system. My point is Ronny is the Haslem-type of player this team needs. Hopefully, Otis is at least making the call.

  10. Marc, I understand. But this borders on false reporting. So have they turned into a gossip site in their "reporting?" What a sham. Kudos to Denton for being the best Magic reporter around, bar none. In my memory, he has yet to throw junk against the wall to generate traffic, unlike the OS and HW.
  11. I hope Brian is held accountable. Bring back Povtak.

  14. Smack, do you really expect two trades when we are winning with our current roster? I don't. Man, if the Magic are still high on Grant, shame on them. His signing was the worst mistake this franchise ever made.

It would save us contract money, would put a player on our bench much more capable of contributing, and would once and for all get rid of our 2006 draft blunder. Best post of the thread...all three points are facts...not opinion's...well, maybe 2 out of 3 ain't bad, ha-ha...anyway, agree Smack. And for those of that think this is a BS article created by Brian Schmitz you could very well be right...but,...have you looked at the front of the Sentinel online sports page? Schmitz may be jerkin us around but he certainly isn't acting like it...Brian has a huge picture of Grant Hill on the front page complete with headlines, "Is It Possible"? "Grant Hill May Come Back to the Magic". He also has a poll listed at the bottome of the caption of the picture. Sure seems as if he is confident that he knows something that all of us don't... http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/ Yet you don't respond to my two valid points. As you always say ... interesting (lol). And didn't Jerry Reynolds tell you that Grant's ankles look like oatmeal and that he was washed up? Look if you want to get rid of JJ for cap room and to move on, I won't argue with you. But to bring back Quaker Oats and assume it will be better this time around seems like wishful thinking to me.

Believe it or not, I think Hill presents a leadership problem for our team. When he was here, our team didn't develop and Hill thought he had to be the leader. Moreover, the way he played the game seemed to suck the life out of the rest of the team. Second, I don't think his game fits SVG ball. His game is all about driving, whereas SVG likes his wing men to be shooters first and foremost. Yes, it would save us $ next year, but I'd rather trade Redick for a different expiring if that's the case. And for the here and now, believe it or not, I'd rather have Redick and wait for his shot to come around. Edit: I just went back and read the whole thread. Good stuff. This is one of the better threads we've had on here in a long time.

Do you think Rashard can do the same things Rasheed can do...? If so, why do we need him...? Nastier, better rebounder, almost as good an outside shooter, would not allow opponents to mess with Dwight, and last but not least, a great man-to-man defender. Flat out emotional, another thing this team desperately needs. Plus, I would love to yell "SHEEEED" just before he releases a three-pointer. You wrote my answer

When MP comes back, I think we should try bringing Turk off the bench and starting TB. Moreover, I think we should see what Turk could net us on the trade market.
