  1. Hey guys,

Recently had the chance to sit in on a Stan Van Gundy chalk talk session.

It was over an hour long, but in there he broke down the various elements of coaching in the NBA, from his road to the league, how he prepares the team on game days, to how he structures practice and more.

I clipped the videos out into 10 different segments all based on topic.

You can find them all here:

Personally, I found the session extremely insightful and heard some stories that even I haven't heard before.

  2. Haha, that's harsh. I guess I'll have to get a Grim Reaper avatar. Apparently, I kill dreams and puppies.

My main point is, I get questions from fans and people post deals for example (I'll use other teams so no one reads to much into it):

Trade: Jason Kidd for LeBron or Cavs are nearing deal for Wade by trading Hickson. And it's crazy.

Fortunately, most people here at least take time to match salaries and level down the realism, but it's not the case through the internet and definitely not on Twitter.

In some ways people oversimplify the process and in some ways the overcomplicate it.

Sometimes in some organization, other people, assistant gms, etc. talk deal and then it works its way up to the GM.

But there's a lot of sitting and waiting, right thing at the right time and not doing a deal for the sake of just doing a deal. It's not always presented that way.

My main point is not to buy into every rumor, it ends up leading to a lot of disappointment or fear of something that's just not true. No one is "laughing at fans," just at the garbage that's tossed out there by some people who claim to have sources.

And I think this story by Josh Cohen does an excellent job of summing it all up: http://on.nba.com/mbXdiL

  4. From the latest Glass Half Full:

Sean Deveney of The Sporting News recently came out with his NBA Power Poll for 2011-12. The Magic, as warranted, are very much in the mix. His rankings below:

    1. MIAMI. This year’s Finals trip could be the first of many to come.

    2. CHICAGO. Derrick Rose won the MVP, but the playoffs showed he needs work.

    3. OKLAHOMA CITY. The Thunder hung tough and made it to the conference finals, a big step forward.

    4. DALLAS. The Mavs aren’t getting any younger, but they’re still deep and talented.

    5. L.A. LAKERS. Job No. 1 for Mike Brown is to make sure Kobe Bryant is on board.

    6. ORLANDO. With Dwight Howard a free agent-to-be, it’s a pivotal year.

  5. Three days.

That’s all the free time Brandon Bass has given himself thus far this offseason. Just three days. An immensely short window of time, considering that’s just an extended weekend for the rest of working world.

While most players no longer in the hunt for a title are enjoying vacations and resting up from a physically and mentally taxing NBA season, Bass is already engaged in a vigorous offseason training program as he attempts to improve himself this summer both on the court and off it.

After taking three fun-packed family days with stops at two of Orlando’s finest attractions – Disney and Universal – Bass headed back into the Magic’s training facility at the state-of-the-art Amway Center to begin preparing for the 2011-12 campaign.

“I just started back working because I figured whoever is going to win the championship is still playing,” he explained. “I just want to get myself that much better and I figure they’re playing, so I should be working and getting better.”

  6. Just a few notes to keep you updated:

A number of Magic players have already started training, practicing, etc., including Chris Duhon and Earl Clark, who went boxing on Wednesday. I was lucky enough to tag along.

    Here is an article:

  7. My latest:

There’s not a more pressing issue on Orlando Magic fans’ minds than the future of All-Star center Dwight Howard.

Even I find myself caught up in the mix.

Everywhere I go, the second anyone finds out I have any affiliation with the Magic, the first question I get is: “Do you think Dwight is going to leave?”

While my guess is probably just as good as yours, let’s take Orlando’s Superman at his word.

“I love the Magic,” Howard recently said via his official blog. “I’m just focused on trying to bring a title to the city of Orlando.”

Now that doesn’t sound like a player trying to catch the next plane out of town, does it?

Let’s remember that Carmelo Anthony forced his way out of Denver and LeBron James planned his escape route from Cleveland years before free agency hit. Don’t get caught up in comparing apples to oranges.

So with Howard saying the right things and remaining steadfast in his notion that he won’t talk about free agency until it’s smack dab right in front of him, isn’t time that we all put the speculation to rest? At least for now? After all, D12 can’t even become a free agent until after next season.

It would be nice if our good friends at the Orlando Sentinel could lead the charge, instead of engaging in similar tactics to the ones that reportedly ran Shaquille O’Neal out of town.

While I understand that they’re reporters and it’s their journalistic duty to report any significant updates in regards to Howard’s future, I fail to see how a dress-Dwight-in-other-uniforms website fits that criteria.

  8. In what has almost become an annual rite of spring, Orlando Magic superstar center Dwight Howard was once again honored on Monday as the NBA’s premier defensive player.

Howard, the only player in NBA history to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award three consecutive years, was the NBA’s highest vote-getter for the All-Defensive Team. It was Howard’s third consecutive year on the first-team squad, while he was a second-team choice in 2008.

He received a league-best 27 votes for the first team and two votes for the second-team, giving him 56 points overall. The NBA’s 30 head coaches vote on the award and a coach is not allowed to vote for a player on his team.
